- Introducing "The Lustron" The Home of the Future. This Retro futurist Mid century home is a rare breed with only around 1200-1500 left in existence of the around 3000 built. This house is one of the survivors and will be receiving a full restoration. So let's take a tour and see the past's home of the future as it stands today. Enjoy!

Woah! We happened to drive past this on Saturday. I yelled out, "LOOK! A METAL HOUSE!" and I got to explain Lustrons to my son. Probably drove past it 100 times and never noticed it before. Glad it is getting the love it deserves!
What town is it in?
Am assuming this fantastic home is in the St. Louis vicinity. Are there enough wall panels and an extra doorway in the disassembled Lustron Home pile to wall off the utility room from that front facing back door?
@@littlehomeinthevalley St. Louis city
Kaleb, I LOVE what your dad is doing, and the fact that you’re helping him. It’s taking restoring a 50’s hot rod to the next level!!
Now I have a little history to "Fallout 4" that has the players house almost exactly like your project house. As you walked around, I can see the game house in my mind. So cool.
Ah - wonderful! Online, I saw 1949 Lustron for sale, last year, in Plattsburgh, NY - loved it! The people that recently bought our 1926 wood-sided cottage, that we lived in some decades ago, have infuriatingly removed all character, including the fab original wooden windows for stupid vinyl, covered over the wonderful golden wood floors with that "trendy" gray flooring that the crowd just has to have this decade in time! I am so sad. It makes me happy to see your Dad restoring original windows - HooRay!!!
They probably wanted a new house tbh. A lot of people want new homes but they don’t build enough in that area or they’re too expensive so they settle for a used home and flip it
Great! I own Lustron #1237 in Iowa Falls. It is the standard 2 bedroom Westchester, and I do have the original build-ins and windows. I don't have an original kitchen sink, but do have the original room divider- china cabinet. I watch the restoration of the 2nd Empire home, and horror of horrors, I have my Lustron decorated with Eastlake furniture, some of it from my maternal grandmother's home. All best wishes. If I can ever be of help, let me know.
I love this. I wouldn't want to live in it myself but I am 1000% thrilled that there are people who restore all the different eras. love love love
Love everything this guy does but the yellow and blue on the outside is very of putting..Paint it black with natural wood features and lots of greenery and it would be a show stopper... If your trying to get the newer generation to appreciate this craftsmanship (which I totally do) this is going to be a turn off ..
@frankie8958 then it wouldn't be a restoration
Exactly!@@jubmelahtes
@@frankie8958I could not disagree more! I love the blue and yellow colour scheme. Also, it's true to the original Lustron design.
@@lysem4392 I get it...I really do. But I still don't like it...For me it just isn't aesthetically pleasing..But I'm very happy for him. Restoration is definitely a labor of love ...
Fallout colors!! Oh I'm so so jealous!! I hope u give more updates!
Your father and you are definitely visionaries. I was born in 1955. Some of the items you describe, as i grew, i still remember seeing. Not everyone could afford to update. I appreciate the tour.
I’ve been watching your channel since the first episode. I noticed this house many times passing by, as I live in the neighborhood. I had no idea it was your dad’s place. Anyways, your channel has been a huge inspiration to me and I just wanted to say thank you keep up the great work. Your fellow city residents are rooting for you!
Fascinating. I've never heard of Lustron before, but the idea of patching your house with Bondo is curiously appealing.
Thanks for the awesome tour. The house will be fabulous. My sister has owned and used the exact same stove and my brother owned and used the very exact fridge. We always giggled because his name is Phil and said the fridge was made just for him. I do hope your dad finds the needed kitchen cabinetry for the kitchen. I think he needs a big old two tone Buick out in the driveway. My dad had one that was red and white and what a beauty it was. Can’t remember what year it was, I will have to look it up. I think it was a 1956 Super. So nice of you helping your dad out. I’m sure there will many wanting to stay in this historic home ❤
Thanks for the update. I’ve been curious to see how things were going at your Dad’s place. Glad to see there’s been some progress.
I was born in 1952 so this is super fun for me to see. Playing mini golf was a favorite childhood pastime - love the course in the backyard. All it needs is some kind of windmill on one of the greens! Your dad must be a really fun guy!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love the additions to the garden, really compliments the house ... the flamingos are fab !
@zeenatbaer138 you know, they keep the Mirelurks away...😂
This is the coolest! I’m from the UK and had only seen houses like this in the game Fallout 4, I had no idea they were actually based on real houses. Amazing work!
Same here lol but I'm from Sweden haha when I saw it I was like "ooh!! A fallout house..!!" 😂
You can definitely see the massive inspiration. Heck the layout is nearly identical to the houses in Fallout 4. Seeing this makes me want to buy one and rebuild it and maybe rent it out for vacationers.
I think the colors they are going for are most the same as the player's home.
Amazing work, it's good to see one of these historic oddities brought back to as it should be. Thanks for the update!
I live in Fargo, ND and there are at least 5 Luxon houses near us. Only 2 have the original exterior panels and windows. The others are obviously the house underneath because of door and window placement. One of the two with the original features also has a very fine matching garage. Thank you for your videos!
There are about 12 of these in our town and the next town over. We drove around to see them all. I was born in 55 myself!
What town?
@@place95 Dixon, IL
And Mt. Morris IL too.
This is wild to me. I've spent hundreds of hours playing Fallout 4 and never realized the houses in Sanctuary Hills were based on real world houses, let alone real world houses that were made an hour away from where I grew up. Also found out there's one of these Lustrons in my town, and I knew the old couple who lived there.
Lol, I just made a comment asking if anyone has played Fallout.
😊oh my gosh! I absolutely love this restoration! Your dad has a wonderful vision for this cool place! It’s kind of great that y’all get to make this memory together! Thank you for sharing his restoration along with yours!❤❤😊😊
What a great project for you and your Dad to work on together. I just love that you are saving a bit of history and sharing it with all of us.
Your Dad's house is looking great, Lots of restoration. Love the back yard, So fun!
We live down the street from this house and the hippo always makes us laugh, but now after watching this video, I truly appreciate what you all are doing and the thought put into this project. Thank you for sharing your work and bringing joy to the community!
Really nice to see the update. Excited to see the progress on this house.
Ooh I love Lustrons! What a boon that your dad has a store of pieces to replace what's missing!
Yeah - but it did cost him to purchase and transport that other home.
@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack I'm sure it did!
I love your dad’s imagination and vision. I’d love to stay there!
Enjoyed this change of pace. Always liked Lustron homes interesting. Along with Sears.
Yep.. u got your hands full
You and your family are special people. Y'all have such a passion for the older things. Like making sure that there are still houses around that reflect a bygone time. Y'all restore them properly and take us along with you. I'm glad that your roots run so deep. And I hope one day when you and Kim have kids that they will appreciate these things as well. That they will strive to restore beauty to neglected places. As always I look forward to seeing what y'all do next.
Oh wow! It is looking soooo much better, lovely to see it all coming back together in its original glory, I absolutely commend you both for your passion and enthusiasm to preserve the past, there needs to be alot more people like yourselves to preserve these historical gems. Look forward to seeing more progress soon, thank you for sharing with us both your wonderful restoration journeys 😊
The backyard is going to be so AWESOME. I can already tell, because I'm getting Pee-wee’s Big Adventure House Vibes. 😎👍❤️
I drive by this house all the time when taking my dog over to the dog park at Wilmore. Also always checking it out so neat.
I was born in 1955, and grew up in southwestern Ohio. There were a number of these metal houses in our area; I wonder if they survived. We lived in a frame house that my dad built, and though the house was wood, we had very similar metal cabinets and appliances in the kitchen. Fun project bringing this piece of history back to life!
I grew up in Maplewood, MO. There was a metal house down the street, unfortunately that part of Maplewood was all torn down for a car dealership. Great video as always
Super fascinating. My first thought was it would be the opposite of cozy. Would it be cold or noisy? A backyard put put course is the coolest idea ever! :o)
That is so cool. Out where I live, Eichlers are the pre-fab home. Collectively, they are protected structures. Its pretty amazing the see whole neighborhoods of all Eichlers. Most have been "modernized". Eichler homes were so forward thinking that many remain as built new just fully restored.
I forgot about this. Again, my best friends rented one in North Muskegon MI. It was like living in a drier. We made a lot of jokes. (It was the unsung 4th little pig's house, etc.)
I enjoyed watching this video. This house is going to look fabulous when the renovations are completed!
@The 2nd Empire Strikes Back
Thank you, and thank your father, so so much for putting the time, money, and effort i to restoring this fantastic old house. Played Fallout 4 so much, when you showed the master bedroom window I was instinctively looking outside for Bloatflys lol. Everything from the laundry room to the hallway closet is perfect!😂
Dude! Just today my wife said she'd love to see the inside of your place, and researching more about Lustron houses I found this video! Very cool. Your dad seems like a great guy! Awesome you doing this project with him. When you guys have it all polished up and ready and need a camera guy I'd happily shoot a nice little video/photos for your listing if you give my wife and I a tour!
I sure learned a lot from this video. I had never heard of Lustron before. What a great idea to return this house to how it was intended to be. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for keeping us updated on this remarkable house.
Would like to see more of your house improvements.
unfortunately Jan, its all paint drying going on this week.
I love the backyard mini golf ⛳️!!!
Cool restoration. Thanks for sharing. Love that you embrace so many different types of architecture. Kudos to you and your dad🤗
I would stay there and play Fallout 4 the whole time lol
I have never seen a place like this. Wicked cool. I hope we get to see it when it's finished.
I will do one more video in a few months once its complete.
Well, I just learned about a little real estate history - Lustron houses! I'd never heard of them before. What a great time capsule!
I will definitely come see your projects when I ever get back to St. Louis on day. Very cool house. 😊
I’ve seen some Lustron houses in Great Bend, KS. My mom told me all about them. They are so cool!
Wow you two have progressed on dad's house. It is so different from the norm.
I have never heard of this type of a house or even knew this was a type of house that was available back in the 50s. It’s definitely a rare home to own. Can’t wait to see it all finished and decked out in 1950s decor which is one of my favourite time periods.
Love this! Thanks for the update
Very interesting. But don't think I'd want to be inside during a thunderstorm!!! 😊
Why not?
@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack Guess I just think of electricity zooming all around from a lightning strike!
I love that your father has a project too. There are several of these Lustrons here in Minneapolis.
This is beautiful! I love everything about what you guys are doing. I wish everyone preserved history with such love and care as this. Wow. I can’t wait to follow the progress!
It's such an interesting house. I'm looking forward to the day it's all done and looking like it's 1955!
When I saw the video cover, I didn't know it was going to be about a 1940's metal house. I never seen one like that house. That is interesting.
i honestly think a modern version of these could be a very good idea
OMG, I LOVE that Lustron home! So, so 50s. What an era! Have you seen the space ship-looking home in the Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI?? They loved the "space-age!"
I drive by often looking for updates! Thank you for the interior views.
More to come!
Very cool. Being born myself in the 50's. Thanks for showing us around.
The stove has a deep well burner! The original slow cooker!. Ours had a tall pot that fit down in the deep well. Cooked awesome pot roasts and soups. And if I remember correctly, you could raise the burner up to the top so you could use it like a normal burner
Hi! I drive by everyday to and from work and I've been so happy to see what's going on.
This is so cool! I’ve been trying to do something similar to my house in Fallout 4 😂
You can do it!
🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the update! I feel like this house needs a theremin in the family room. 🤓 I love the backyard additions.
What an intriguing, interesting and informative video! Never heard of a Lustron Home! Thought I've heard of the homes you could by from Sears! Fascinatin! Thanks for sharing!
There is a house like this across the street from my moms house. It recently sold so I was able to see the realtors photos online. It was all original except the kitchen sink and bathroom sink.
i have family near ky and sometimes when drive through we see a lustron house, pretty cool to see how its supposed to look
So cool - also never heard of this nor seen one. Maybe they didn't make it to the west coast. It's so kooky! Love it and can't wait to see it in original condition. You can get him magnets for X-Mas...stick em anywhere!
there are none on the westcoast. most are in the midwest and east. They were made in Columbus, OH and shipped out from there.
I'm looking forward to seeing the finished job. Keep pushing!
*kaleb, thanks for an update on what has been going on and happening at your Dad John's Lustron project house. It is taking shape... but to see a huge Dinosaur, Hippo & miniput golf in the backyard is amazing. 🙂.*
Have never heard of a Lustron Home. Looking forward to all episodes!
There are quite a few of them all in a row on Litzsinger Rd. in Brentwood!
🤠
I have never heard of a Lustron house until now. That is seriously cool!
Yeah me too. Cool!!! Gotta do more investigating.
This style house was used in the game Fallout 4. Several of these homes exist in Minneapolis.
there are about 1200-1500 in existence in the midwest and northeast of the US. (there were originally 3000 built)
In the comments of the first Lustron video I said that I loved it. I still do. It is a wonderful and very cool concept. Love the mini golf as well...
How funny 1955 magazines for each month & a mini golf in the backyard. Now I see Kaleb where you get your craziness from. LOL 😆
I am SO enjoying following this project! Terrific work John and Kaleb!
Got to get a Mr Handy from General Atomics
The dinosaur and Hippo in the backgarden reminds me of statue dinosaurs in a place called Crystal palace park in south London in the UK that have been there since the 18th century!
I love it! Very cool to see the Lustron coming together!
Glad you are preserving this history. We have a yellow one here in Peru, Indiana.
I'd love to see more videos on the lustron home! Especially with the new fallout series this is on point to gain lots of viewers!
just dropped
I want to stay here when its done!!!
Nice to see these Restored, I never knew they existed till you showed this the first time. I LOVE the Mini-Golf that is kinda Cool !! It will be Fun to see how this one turns out. 😊
What a cool house!! I’d love this see more on this restoration!
Looks great! Besides the one on my street in Kalamazoo found a 2nd one and a 3rd in PawPaw MI.
really glad youtube suggested these to me. Such a fascinating piece of history. Theres a handful here left in town, but im a good day away from 2 cities just loaded with them. Maybe someday if I feel bothered i'll take a trip to just see how it looks having more than 1 together.
I've been wondering about this house! this is an amazing project and it makes me so happy that this is being restored
Thank you for posting this!!! I was actually wondering what's going on with this house about a week or so ago! PS: that putt-putt course in the back is the cherry on the sundae!
Hey, I was born in 1955!!
We have the same windows which are no longer made and have added storms. Many houses with the same windows in our neighborhood have been upgraded, and look fine. The steel frames make no sense for cold weather, and the hardware is very difficult to find. Glad that you are restoring the house.
Thanks for the update!
Your Stove is a 1958 Fridgesdaire if its the same one my mom had the back burner lowers to sink a deep pot to make like corn on the cob or boil soup. I like your home, my parents converted a three floor Victorian into a mid century modern. I hate mid century stuff personally. But your dad has treasure there. Good luck Alex
When I saw the heating room and the kitchen, I started to wonder if the finished house would look like a mixture of retro-SciFi (you know, what was supposed to look futuristic in the 50s) and a submarine (the cover plates at the wall). It's gonna be interesting to watch the progress of this project :)
Would love to see the progress on this home as well. Maybe a new channel? Maybe you could set up a few cameras and get time-lapse? That mini golf is awesome.
When completed, we would love to have a vacation in 1955 😊
I love the kitchen!!
That was fun! Thanks for the update.
So cool
