The fact that you can tell he's smiling under his collar when he hears them calling to him. He could have stayed with them and even been happy if not for the knowledge that he'd constantly be fighting the thirst and the knowledge that they would both grow old, wither, and die and he'd still be there. And even when it's upbeat here, his theme always has a hint of sadness to it.
The smile shows that he really does care about them. He just can't stay in one place for long as a hunter. It's bittersweet how they're saying goodbye to him, but they're grateful for the time he was with them and protected them. And while they may never see each other again, he will remember them, as they remember him. I like how he smiles at the end of Bloodlust, too, knowing that all is well for the local people. They're safe, and he's not needed there anymore. He can continue on travelling...

My cousin still cries at the end because she wanted D and Doris to end up together. I cried at 0:15 because this is one of the best endings and soundtracks in any given anime. D is a man with a sad many pasts, he has seen many beautiful young women. Helped many people. But he knows he is not destined to be loved. So he walks his lonely road. He knows he is handsome and an eye candy for the ladies, and that is enough for him. He can never live a happy ordinary life.

Totally inappropriate ending track but it’s got one of the best intros ever. Love this movie, this and Fist of the North Star should be in any introduction to anime (plus Akira)
it its still going on on book (novels, more than 20 books) they are even releasing some spin off side stories with another character, its not translated yet tho, its called "another vampire hunter d noble grey lancer"
The movie might have a few story issues and the electronic fake instruments have not aged well, but I'd say it's a great movie in it's own right. I don't know how it is versus source material, but yesterday I opened it just to randomly see how animation looks like in various parts of the movie and ended up watching it in full although I normally hate vampire stories and dislike watching movies. The intrigue, the characters and their motivations, the dialogues, were all very good. And if someone is not convinced by those, the animation alone makes it worth watching as a piece of complex and very difficult craftmanship.

of course D& Alucard are uncanny from each other, known fact is that D is the son of Dracula, &in volume 8 of the manga Hellsing Alucard turns out to be Count Dracula, (Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards, after all)

God I loved this movie when I was a kid. D is like a much more introverted and lonely version of Alucard.

続編は、オーディオドラマでも、
演じられましたが、塩沢さん以外のDは、考えられません。
それがこの時代の声優の強みだと思います。今の声優みたいに幾つもの声色は使えないけど、「この人のこの声じゃないとダメだ」と感じさせてくれます。
声優（俳優）＝個性の捉え方が今より強かったと思います。

元々小説の大ファンでこの映画も勿論だけど2000年辺りに公開された映画も見たしラジオドラマも聞いた( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ
今大ヒットしてる鬼滅の刃なんてここからインスパイアされたところもかなりあると思う。
