    So crazy how they make it look like they are actually on the stage. Glad to find a video that explains it because I couldn't wrap my mind around how this was done.

    As a cg artist, I was blown away by the compositing. The reflection (which is actually a cool cheat I have used) helped sell it. But the slight shadow and the light on the monsters was second to none and a few other little touches, I was incredibly impressed. The tracking was epic. And the scenes were they were sitting together, how the light was perfectly matched was absolutely stunning.
    Would definitely like to know some more technical details. Was this done in UE5 or something else?

    • @wi2rd
      @wi2rd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mind expanding on the cheap cheat? I find the reflections one of the most baffling parts of this myself :)

      @benjones5799 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wi2rd yea, they are relatively easy to do, but sell it very well. There are a lot of other fine details that are more challenging, but less noticeable

      @@benjones5799 How would one do it? Could you explain the basic steps?
      I find them quite convincing, but I fail to see an easy way to create them.

    • @benjones5799
      @benjones5799 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@wi2rd reflections are basically just a mirror image of the object above with a slight opacity and a mask / texture on the floor to occlude the image (so the cracks and dirt and parts of the set get in the way in the right way.
      That said, I don't think it was likely done that way. In UE5/4 you could set up a virtual set that is identical to the one they are dancing in, and set up a motion tracker of some sort on the camera (even a vr controller works, but from the video they have more purpose built stuff). Then you set up the characters in UE5 and stream the tracking data from the suits / facial tracking. Set up the lighting, everything, exact and then just composite them together with masks / colour correction to put them together with the live actors (oversimplifying extremely). No doubt a few layers of haze and some glows, etc, were used to, to help blend it. When you do that, if you set up reflectivity on the floor textures, it will automatically do it for you (short of masking out the real actors). I'm trying to work out if the audience reaction is just scripted, or if they just put a screen up the back that they took out in post. Either way, they did an awesome job. I've seen recent movies with far worse character integration.
      I could be completely wrong, but the second way is how I would attempt it. A lot of moving parts though, so props to them for pulling it all together so well.

    I like the show but when the best moment of the dance comes the director cuts to the audience and judges reactions. It's very frustrating since I keep missing the dance and it kills the mood. I want to see the whole dance, just put a square or something with the audience and judges reactions. 🤨

  • @Madillusionist
    @Madillusionist ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Really have to give props to the cgi animators and artists that worked on this show. The production quality was really well done, even better than some movies. It's just unfortunate that the live audience and judges weren't able to see the final rendering 'live', so their reactions and applause may sometimes come off scripted, but what isn't scripted nowadays. Overall, really entertaining and fun watch, and i'm not usually a fan of competition shows. Using the mocap and vfx tech really adds an interesting spin to the show. Really curious how much budget they had on this show. If they are doing another season, I think they can do away with a live audience.

      @@Mark_Griffin Which is why I don't see the point, like what benefits do you get using mocap compared to actual suits? Lol. Audience and judges get to see a low res version of a mocap dance that's not even retargeted properly onto a rig which has comical proportions, then after everything is done and the judges give their opinions and supposedly already make their verdicts and voice their opinions, a few weeks or months later a vfx house with tech artists and animators go in and clean up the raw data to make it look actually presentable to people watching at home.... like, it's so unnecessary just make real practical suits... and this is coming from someone who works in the industry and has had to retarget and clean up raw mocap data before - it's great technology just the context of using it for a "live" performance is questionable...

    Good concept but a lot of poor models, and even worse, the best dancer of them all got eliminated. The judges were going based on looks and personality and not dancing skills. They even pushed Grumby (or whatever) through despite saying he didn't do as good. Flame dominated. Accept.

    I was really curious. I thought they were using hologram technology so the audience could see. Japan's mastering it atm and putting on some pretty good virtual concerts

      Nowhere near. If you watched the 'making of' for Avatar you'd understand why.

    I can’t seem to get into the show. Dancing to me is a language that needs to be expressed with movement as much as facial expressions. I couldn’t interpret the emotions expressed in the dancing when the technology isn’t capturing the human aspects clearly.
