WOW! What an honor to be a part of this video. Oli: you killed it with this one! I LOVED the storytelling around your brother’s Gold Star, and I literally laughed out loud at the end. Incredible work, and thanks for asking me to contribute 🙏
I love this kind of documentary style video. This style of video has huge potential, the hobby could use more education on the "why" on how things are expensive. Great work!
I was able to trade for a metagross on the schoolyard when I was about 9, this would've been 2014 so god knows how it ended up in the hands of the kid I got it from, I'll always cherish it
my god. you have actually no idea how much this video was made for me specifically. i've been singing these cards' praises ever since they first came out back in '04, and i've known they'd be the "ultimate" cards of pretty much the entire tcg's history for just as long. they were just perfect. visually, thematically, aesthetically, contextually perfect chase cards. heck, i was still young when i was opening up rocket returns and the second i became aware of these cards i knew the path that was ahead for them. tragically, EXACTLY like you, i wasnt the lucky kid to pull one, it was my sister. she pulled torchic. she had no idea what she had. i tried to explain to her that the card was special, it was a "special color" (i knew what shinies were at the time, just not the term), and that she needed to take very good care of it. my dad has always been into collecting vintage baseball cards so he had us trained from day one on double-sleeving our pokemon cards, and never playing with them. of course, i thought this was super lame at the time but did it anyway, because i was a parent-pleaser. my sister wasn't. she took that torchic card, put a clump of sticky tack to the back, and stuck it to the wall over her bed in our shared bedroom. i stared at that thing for years as it slowly curled in from gravity and grew a stain beneath the adhesive. so many other rare pulls joined its ranks on the "murder wall" as i called it. but none ever matched torchic for sheer value, obviously. years later, i still have all my old cards from the ex through delta species era (the best era, rant for another time), pandemic hits. i send em off to PSA to get slabbed, get 9's and 10's across the board, i live off of selling off just those cards alone for a good few years thanks to those hideous spikes. part of me wants to feel smug about it, that my collection was the one that retained value, but no. torchic still spiritually stares at me from atop the murder wall. i don't think i'll ever be able to escape it. i mean it when i say if i could have one time machine trip, it would be going back and swapping packs with her on that day. kind of a weird and unhinged essay i know but i feel like you'd appreciate it. lol
I've owned a few Gold Stars in my life since I grew up with this era! I pulled a Vaporeon Gold Star as a child, but unfortunately I decided to trade it away for some rare Pikachu cards (that I still own). The trade in itself was fair given my Vaporeon was severely beaten up, but I just miss my Vaporeon. I also had the Jolteon Gold Star, but it was the non holo version from a world champion deck. I no longer have it. I also had Mew Gold Star. I don't remember how I got it, but I eventually traded that away too for a Pikachu Gold Star, which I still own today. Gold Stars are some of my favorite cards ever, I've even made and illustrated a few fake ones for fun (including Delcatty, it's where my pfp comes from)
@@ludicrouslunatic Nice! What condition is it? I have a pikachu but its sort of beaten up. Like I traded for it at damaged price but it also doesnt look that bad when you see it.
@shinygiveaways1920 Mine is in pretty nice shape! A little minor edge wear and one tiny noticeable scratch on the front, but otherwise it's alright. Perfect for the Pikachu binder!
As a content creator, I see all the effort you have put behind this video and I gladly can tell you that this is a fucking masterpiece of a result. Congratulations on creating one of the best videos I have seen in our niche. Cheers mate.
Gold stars have always been some of my favorite cards. I grew up with the ex series so I’ve pulled several. Some of my favorites being Metagross, Kyogre, and Registeel star. I ended up buying some second hand for dirt cheap prices way before the pandemic. Wish I pulled the trigger on Torchic and Mew back in the day😭
Since I discovered this channel I haven't missed a single video! I always thought that the Japanese promo Dance! NEO Imakuni? Be a gold star prototype, as the first card to come out of the artwork
Great video! The combination of factors (low point in the hobby, low pull rate, lack of easy access to information at the time of release) really made the gold star shine!
Thanks for creating the video. I have a better understanding on gold stars since I left the hobby during Neo Genesis with Lugia being the last chase card i remembered. I was wondering why a lot of people were into gold stars when I went back into the hobby last year.
Gold Stars came well after my time enjoying pokemon as a kid so I have no attachment or desire to collect them. But I am certainly happy another group of kids got to enjoy pokemon cards differently from myself and have their own pocket of nostalgia within the hobby. Very unique and awesome cards!
I'm 23 now and when I was a kid I remember delta species, so I'm wondering if gold stars were being printed when I was young, it just goes to show again, how insanely rare they were in comparison to a holo charizard. these kinda are deserving of their value as its an era when less kids bought cards & less were printed in general and on top of it were so dang rare lol.. kinda unrelated but now this makes me wanna go watch booster box openings of sets with gold stars, see if people usually even get 1 per box or not
I actually own a Pikachu Goldstar as one of my very few English cards of that era (Goldstar didn't exist in German as far as I know. ) I randomly found out that the card is actually worth around 300€ when sorting my cards. It was always just a nice card I owned, I never really thought much about it.
I feel like it's worth mentioning with the radiant cards that functionally they are identical to gold stars gameplay wise (maximum 1 per deck featuring a shiny pokemon). If they were to ever return gold stars they would be as rare as ace specs/radiants were (or at least the base print) due to TPCi trying to make the game more affordable since the XY era (reprinting Roaring Skies just for the Shaymin EX which dominated the meta, the XY premium collection of alts that were all very playable, many level 1 prebuilt deck kits containing playable cards that cost several $ if buying singles). The numbering in the set would also be the same as seen in the Japanese set orders for gold stars too and not at the end of the set like English sets were so they can be seen as a successor in a sense.
I recently got into pokemon tcg for the first time since i was a kid. Your videos have been very informative and fun to watch :) Thank you loads for helping me get back into the hobby
I have a mint gold star Mew, my grail of my collection. I wish I was a collector during those days but very happy to have it. One day I’ll get that gold star Rayquaza though, they’re my two favorites
7:08 Was the torchic ungraded at $120? If so, you can't compare a non graded card to a graded card in a 10 and say it multiplied by that value. Graded cards are many times multiple x's compared to non graded if they are 10's. The fact that Latios / Latios Alt Art was $20 ungraded in 2019 and is now over $800 ungraded is a 40x return with both non graded with a 4 - 5 year time frame . That's a fairer comparison and really shows how much it appreciated.
One thing to add is the cheapest gold stars are the legendary dogs not because of demand but because of supply is much much higher. There is a story that a worker at a factory overprinted those cards in secret and sold/is selling them off over the years. Theres a video out there of a huge binder filled with gold star suicune Raikou and entei. Hundreds of them. So I wouldn’t recommend anyone get those 3 as an investment, but they are great collection cards for the price Great video btw really enjoyed it
@ th-cam.com/video/q5bk6QlYj5g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1vbogy1TJugEJ5ey here’s a video about it. Ya cardhouse eu was selling psa 10 and psa 9 gold star dogs for what seemed like a decade just a constant stream it was incredible
Ah... my sister had the metagross when we were kids, was always jealous, but she eventually gave me all her cards down the line. I sold it after learning of its value, but unfortunately for not nearly as much as i could've gotten, as i overestimated the damage on it. Oh well. Perhaps I'll buy another to replace it some day, as I sort of miss it.
great video! I am blessed to own the only pristine copy of the English Gold Star Rayquaza in the world. You are not gonna believe what type of offers I’ve gotten for that card
I was lucky to pull the charizard gold star back in the day from the 3 pack blister. I still own it today and I treasure it so much. Honestly it’s probably the best shiny charizard artwork in my opinion.
I pulled the gold star charziard when I was a kid. I really didn't have a concept of the rarity of the cards. I remember trying to look up the charizard, to find some information on it and I could never find anything. It was absolutely my favorite card as a kid. Just this year I found out how much its worth. I don't think I could get rid of it, but I may get it graded. It is in really great condition. Delta species were my favorite as a kid.
I got a torchic for 200 euros last year, and it really is quite busted up, but I don't mind. It's such a special card. I also have a treecko, I hope I can finish the set one day.
I traded nothing of note for three gold stars (Vaporeon/Flareon/Mew) on a Facebook group what feels like a life time ago, and like a week later everyone decided they were worth hundreds. Which was nice.
My siblings and I got a pack of cards for Christmas. I opened all the packs and resealed them with an iron. I gave myself the Blaine's moltres that my sister would've gotten. It haunts me til this day but of my siblings, I am the only card collector so..
This video is amazing!!! I never knew my gold star Pikachu was that rare it’s been sitting in a binder for years. Where do you buy those rubber protectors for magnetic cases like the one you had around the latios?
I stopped collecting by the time Gold Stars came out so I'll never know what it feels like to pull one. Luckily, I was able to buy some before prices went insane, and even one more just last year. But as soon as Pokemon Go came out in 2016, I started buying Pokemon cards again from Every Comic Store in a 50 mile radius from my house. From 2016 - 2020, singles were insanely affordable and I regret not buying so many cards, like the Skyridge Raikou holo in perfect condition for $63, Expedition Mew Holo for $60, a second Houndoom Aquapolis holo for $40 (luckily I did get 1), a second Shining Gyarados also for $40 (my first is beat to hell, I don't know what I was thinking), Shadowless Charizard for $90, Shining Kabutops for 70, Fire-type Mew Delta Species Holo Misprint where the back was upside down for like $20, 1st edition Zapdos Base Set for $300, and a LEGENDARY COLLECTION REVERSE HOLO FIREWORKS GYARADOS FOR 10 BUCKS!!... and like a billion others that I forgot or I'm too lazy to think of any more. Even more recently, I regret not buying a Mew Gold Star for $600 because it was easily an 8, likely a 9, and if I was very lucky a 10, but not likely. Luckily I did get some gold stars before 2020 and the price explosion. Pikachu Gold Star in mint, Celebi gold star lightly played and a CGC 9 Entei.. I only recently found out about the Entei/Raikou/Suicune thefts, which does kinda put a damper on my excitement around that card.
Getting in here before you blow up cause this is such good content but I absolutely adore these last few videos you've put out, keep up the great work!

What do you mean success? They were extreme failures and no one used them. The only reason they're so valuable right now is that the Gen 3 era was kind of a low point for engagement
Random question, but do you put your cards in a sleeve before you put them in a one touch? I'm debating if perfect fit sleeves on the card and then in the one touch are necessary or not!😂
I found a gold star Registeel in my old binder today. Had no idea why it was so expensive. Thanks for this video.
I remember i sold a charizard for 70$ in 5th grade so i could buy groceries for me n my siblings
