  • Quick video I made to help anyone with a leaky Samsung fridge caused by a frozen condensation drip channel. Please like and share if you found this video helpful.
    OCTOBER 2022 UPDATE
    I have not owned this fridge since July 2017. I would like to assist with some questions and concerns that have been voiced, however, I cannot due to the fact I don't have access to this unit any longer. Sorry for the inconvenience.
    I am glad I have been able to assist so many people with this issue. Thanks for watching!

    Fantastic video. Your warning about the insulation getting frozen to the coils really saved me. I would have pulled it off by force (and caused damage) if not for your detailed description of the problem. It took me about 5 hours to do this (most of the time just trying to melt the ice dam), but well worth it to save the trouble and expense of buying a new fridge. Bravo! You are a kind man to share this with others.

    Thanks heaps. My drain wasn’t frozen over ( although I installed the copper wire anyway) but the upper cooling elements and upper wire looms were encased in ice. I could hear the fan hitting the ice. I used a hair dryer to defrost and am now hoping that the refrigerator will cool down. Never buying another Samsung. I’m sure that I’ll be doing this again in a few months.

    THANK YOU!!!! I have a very similar fridge, with the same issue! You walked me through the de-paneling, and thawed it out from there! I greatly appreciate you taking the time to make and post the info!!!Note-you have to thaw it all out before trying to pull off the panel---it's foam, it will break...

    In addition, make sure to clean and drain water defrost line. It's most likely clogged and causes excess water/humidity buildup inside fridge. Easy access from back of the fridge, after sheet metal cover is removed. There are 2 or 3 drain tubes leading to drain pan; one or more of drain tubes is likely to be completely blocked with dirt and gunk. Good luck!

    Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make this video and for sharing. Repair shops now a days always want to jump off the bridge and replace all sorts of parts to "see" if it does the job. Sometimes a little ingenuity, patience and DIY does the job. Thank you for such a clear explanation of how to remove the panel and pit-falls to avoid! I have a Samsung model RF18HFENBSR and the procedure was very similar. Even wrapped a wire around the heating coil and stuck it farther down the drain hole. Just plugged it in and so far so good.

    Thank you so much for posting this detailed video. Since I bought mine I have had problem after problem with it. I couldn’t figure out why the back where the holes are and styrofoam is visible was frozen and bottom of the drawer had water all underneath. I have defrosted my fridge a handful of times but now I will do what you showed me. Thank you!
    I don’t remember having so much issues like this with my old fridge.

    Excellent video explanation, nice job. Back in October I went through this process and added a copper wire into the drain hole as instructed, but unfortunately now, 4 months later, it's frozen over again. I think the copper line may have worked, most of the ice now is high up high on the coils, but I agree this is a seriously flawed refrigerator. Never buying another Samsung appliance.
    A tip -- if you can, put all the stuff in the fridge in the freezer drawers to keep it from thawing. If you want to clear out all the ice and you're brave, you can do this: after pulling all the shelves, put a hair dryer in the fridge with the nose on a folded-up hot pad, and then close the doors. Be *very* careful to check it every minute or so and make sure it isn't melting the plastic near the hair dryer. It heats up the inside of the fridge pretty good and should melt the back panel loose within 15 or 20 minutes. But watch it closely and check it very frequently!

    • @shellymaxwell1883
      @shellymaxwell1883 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did this intuitively with the hair dryer (as I tired of holding it)....I checked it every few minutes to make sure it wasn't too hot and melting plastic. It helped speed the process for sure!

    Thanks for this video. I had the same problem and did basically the same thing to fix mine. Your video had the best advice I've found on removing that stubborn back panel by making sure it's defrosted with a hair dryer first. Also, for others with this problem, don't forget to unplug the fridge before doing this, or else it'll take longer to defrost and you could burn yourself on that heating element! I'm no electrician, so I don't know if you could shock yourself, too.

    Thanks for the video. Have owned this unit almost 5 years and had been very frustrated with the leaking/condensation. Our problem was that the unit didnt have the correct amount of space to breath. Did two simple things that really helped with the leaking/condensation. Disconnected refrigerator, pulled it out and permanently removed the metal panel covering the condenser. By removing the condenser plate cover it gave the condenser the ability to dissipate more heat. While there, cleaned and vacuumed all the hardware of dirt. Second, when putting the unit back, left a full 2 to 3 inches between it and the wall, again to increase air circulation (Yes unit does stick out bit more than we like for sure). These two things greatly reduced the leaking. Now whenever I notice condensation I immediately shut off the energy saver setting and also increase the crisper draw temperature to its highest setting. Another thing that probably helps is we turn off the ice maker during the non summer months. There is a settings button that allows you to turn it off and on. As someone previously commented Samsung should be ashamed of themselves for producing such a horrible unit. Either way wasn't going to throw it away after spending over $2000. Good luck. Thanks again for the video.

    For 13 years i have scraped out the ice when froze over Well it finally died and low and behold we are buying another Samsung with French doors Im sure they have corrected nothing We are buying the model with the drawer above the freezer but the upper part of fridge looks identical to yours. Thank you so much for the video! If it still happens I will update. I just bought model RF28HMEDB. I could be wrong but this defrost water drains to a pan where a cooling fan blows across it to cool your compressor and motor. If it doesn't drain you have premature failure of the compressor or motor. I have wanted this thing to die for 11 years, because I have hated the ice maker.( I still have a brand new one in the attic.) So I buy another Samsung. LOL But your video will make the difference. Thanks again!

  • @dougs.7054
    @dougs.7054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video. Always wondered how those shelves and drawers came out. Here's an easy way to defrost the coils so the cover panel isn't stuck to them. Simultaneously press the Energy Saver and Freezer buttons and hold for 8 seconds. This turns the frig. off. A chime will ding and the temp. displays will both show OF. To turn the frig. back on, repeat. So turn the frig. off before bed at night and back on in the morning. Do this for two or three days in a row and the coil should be fully defrosted. No need to unload the frig. and freezer as they will remain plenty cold. However, it's a good idea to remove the bin from the ice maker. Stash it in an extra freezer if you have one. Still, be careful when you remove the cover. Just in case.

    Thank you sir. Your fix also worked for a Model# RF260BEAESR. A gazillion similar Samsung problems posed all over the web for several years indicate a bad design that should be so simple and cheap to fix (a bigger drain hole, a heating probe that actually works), yet Samsung have instead just continued to churn out the same issue for multiple new fridge models. As a consequence, a frozen up & overflowing drain, pools of water on the floor, a fan that fills up with ice and after a lot of noise eventually stops, causing a large iceberg forming above the cooling coils/fins.

    THANK YOU!!! Total Time: Approximately 1 and 1/2 hours for me, however, the ice formation in our fridge was all at the top of the cooling fins so removing the panel only took about 15 minutes and yes we did have to hit it with a hair drier PRIOR to removing the panel. In addition, because the ice was not concentrated on the fins I was able to chip away much of it, but we also were very careful to melt away the ice around the cooling fins so as not to damage them or put a hole in the cooling line..that would mean fridge death.

    VERY helpful, detailed video. I think he touched on all / most of the really important elements...right down to the tiny white arrows on the panel to see where the "locking tabs" are found. Especially important to heed his advice to be patient with freeing the (frozen) panel from back of the fridge and not pulling hard to get it off. I'd add that you want to be careful when using a hair dryer, that you not let it get too hot, melting the plastic or wiring that's just behind the panel. Amazon has a replacement part that is made to keep the drip tray from freezing up. It's not expensive ($7 - DA61-06796A Refrigerator Drain Tube Clip) but i also like his idea of the copper wire. Well done!!

    I have the same fridge but with many many problems... this was one of them the repair guy fixed many times, one time destroying that back panel that it had to be replaced. he used a steamer with a pointed nozzle to defrost ice which worked very well, and cleared that drain tube in the back with ease. ive sice gotten a clothing steamer for $8 online that defrosts my ice maker very quickly, like in a minute. if your drain tube keeps freezing up, the bottom (accessed in the back of fridge) drain nozzle needs a new tip with larger openings to prevent dust from clogging it. mine was replaced twice and it looked like you could simply expand the drain hole on the existing part. anyway, he also installed a new heater tab, cutting off that little one you reference, and replacing with one that portrudes into the drain, like the copper wire you suggested.

      Our fan was rattling from ice buildup. When I removed the cover there was a 14g solid copper wire going down the drain hole. 😃 The drain was clear as ice was up top. Other than propping open the nipples of the drain plugs under the bottom (which stick together over time), your wire trick has been the fix that bought us ~2 years. Even now with drain open it was 10 min job. Thanks again!!!! 👍😃

    I suffered through months of trying all the fixes you read about for this and other related models. I found the root cause of the problem is the defrost cycle. It does not defrost properly unless the controls are reset. After fully defrosting, simply reboot every 3-7 days by flipping the breaker or unplugging machine for 15 seconds. It will reset and defrost for a cycle or two and keep ice away.

    Good video
    I think a LOT of Samsung french door refrigerator owners have had this problem. There are now a number of videos on taking off the panel. I see one person said to check the drain down in the bottom of the frig. That was clear on mine, could be a issue for some. By the way you can now buy a replacement clip for the small one on the heater coil, probably better than using a bunch of extra copper wire. The coils do have reputation of freezing up enough to slow the fan and make a clicking noise. I believe there is a new version of the motherboard which has a better defrost cycle. It's a bit expensive.
    In my case I had the frozen coils but, had far too much water (a soaked towel full every day). Turned out the filter assembly (where the filter twists in) was leaking. Found a video on changing that out and bought the assembly online.
    No more extra water! Without the extra water hopefully there will be less to condense around the coil.

    thanks for this great video. my refrigerant coil was frozen to the panel just like you said. I used the ground wire from some Romex I had around which is already stripped.
    Getting the drain to dethaw is a chore

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! One of the best video's I've watched! I have the exact same model refrigerator and problem. I guess I will spend my time fixing the refrigerator myself instead of researching and buying a new one. (Did I say 'Thanks' already?!)

    Started having this same issue within a month of warranty expiration. We have had to defrost every 3 months, then once a month now daily. Copper wire insert was put in place a year ago. We are at our wits end and I still owe on this damn fridge. I have been very reluctant to call for service because I have read and heard that no repair has been permanent.

    Thanks so much for the detailed video. Made my job easy. I additional step I would like to add,make sure to clean the drain pipes in the back panel and to clean the dust in that area. I think my issue was clogged drain pipe more than the drain clip malfunction. I will know what it is in few weeks I guess.
