    Models of DaVinci machines have been displayed in museums since the mid 1800s. So this may well have been a museum display at some point. Or perhaps from a university collection. There are examples of DaVinci models in quite a few science museums in Europe that I have seen. There was also a travelling exhibit of these machines that I saw in Las Vegas maybe 10 (?) years ago.

      Back in the early 2000s, there was an enormous exhibition of Leoonardo works at the Met Museum in Manhattan. I spent over 30 hours total there... it was rough, crowds, elbows bumping, but the last day was supposed to be on a Saturday. As they were closing, one of the staff said they were extending it one more day. I went back ghe next day and had a great opportunity to really see the works without distractions. In the early 80s, I remember seeing Ginevra da Benci alone. It is incredible to see a Leonardo work just by yourself.

    One thing about ornithopters, they dont need to be man powered. They can be rubber, engine, motor driven, actuator driven, Etc... the main features are that the ornithopter has non-fixed wings and is intended to fly via flapping motion as a bird or flying insect would.
    There have been many successful models made that work and fly amazingly, but few if any of what you'd call a full scale success. It just doesn't work so well when you scale it up to human carrying size. (Despite what Dune says ;) )
    The government had one that was very similar to a dragonfly and held a small fpv camera for recon behing enemy lines. They've since changed to the micro helicopter design our troops now use. More robust and stable I guess.

      Mark refuses to give Rick appraisals. He's a museum guy. He's just there to give some history and verify if an item is real. I'm sure he'd be more than capable of giving a rough value estimate if he wanted to.

    Can you imagine what Leonardo could have done with even a little bit of technology? I mean they had nothing back then! Just think what he could have done with just a hot air balloon or a hang glider.

    • @billyhammond3132
      @billyhammond3132 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should look more into the fact they did have both of those. We all think the wrights flew first but nowhere near first. They made the first fully controlled human plane. Humans had been controlled falling like gliders for a long time and had balloons that were not very fast or controllable. Neat stuff if your into it.

    • @edwardbeaty8899
      @edwardbeaty8899 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First hot air balloon was credited in 1783! Long, long after Leonardo! I know the Japanese were experimenting with gliders way back when. I'll have to look that up. I'm just saying Leonardo Davinci basically had no level of technology to help him.

    • @edwardbeaty8899
      @edwardbeaty8899 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwardbeaty8899 I enjoyed his style if invention because its mechanical engineering and didn't rely on computers so he used leverage and pulleys and some of the most basic materials to accomplish his dedigns so I kinda thought he was the tech at that point😁 I know what you mean though. Most inventors we learn wear incredible stood on the shoulders of the tech of the prior engineers and didn't do much more than perfect one part of it as opposed to inventing it. Such as Edison inventing the light bulb dispite not inventing the light bulb do much as finding the right element to outperform the current ones being made and make them able to be mass produced. There are balloon flights predating the late 1700s but they were not controlled or useful. More of a toy for a wealthy person to play with. The more things change the more they stay the same in history.
