- HQ very rare promo music video. "Let's Go" was the first single from The Cars' album Candy-O released in 1979. It was written by Ric Ocasek and features lead vocals by Cars bassist Ben Orr. The single peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S., but the song was an even bigger success elsewhere. In Canada, the track reached #5, and remains the Cars' highest ever charting single in that country. Similarly, in Australia "Let's Go" peaked at #6, and remains The Cars' highest charted hit in that country.
The song's signature hook, a series of claps followed by a shouted "Let's go!" is derived from the 1962 instrumental of the same name by The Routers.
The song tells the story of a 17-year old girl and her budding interest in "the nightlife". It is told from the perspective of a teenage boy who wishes to ask her out for a date. She refuses any and all of his advances.
The Cars are an American rock band that emerged from the early New Wave music scene in the late 1970s. The band consisted of lead singer and rhythm guitarist Ric Ocasek, lead singer and bassist Benjamin Orr, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson. The band originated from Boston, Massachusetts, and were signed to Elektra Records in 1977.
The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop that was then becoming popular and which would flower in the early 1980s.
On October 21, 2010, The Cars confirmed that they have reunited and are recording their first album in 23 years. Greg Hawkes will fill in on bass for Benjamin Orr, who died in 2000. (Source: Billboard)

loved the cars growing up but always assumed Ocasek was lead vocals for their music. Now 50 and realizing Orr sang most of the big hits I liked. So just rediscovering the band and appreciating what a great voice and individual Orr was. So sad he he was taken so early.

Ben Orr... Awesome front man for the band. He always admitted that Rick was the "front man" for the band. Ben was a very humble man. Died of pancreatic cancer in October 4th 2000 at 53 years young. As a Bass Player myself.. he was very underrated for his cool bass riffs. R.I.P. Ben!
I'd take it a step further and say Rock the dimension your in Ben!
Yeah you can see a few spots there where Ben starts ripping it up on his bass. Some nice little runs and riffs in there. Sang at the same time and made it all look easy.

Yes, the 80's started in 1978 with the Cars first album - New Wave. The late 1970's was a wild time for music. You had disco/Saturday Night Fever, the Cars (New Wave), punk rock (The Ramones, The Sex Pistols), plus many new rock bands - Journey, Van Halen, Toto, Foreigner. Super Tramp, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Rush. Then, the 80's happened.

Yes. I agree. Benjamin was a tv star on a Cleveland, OH station (their house band) at the tender age of 15, playing guitar and singing.
He can also play drums-bass-keyboards a virtuoso and his stage presence is off the charts GREAT! Always thought he was British until looking into his background, he’s got gorgeous Slavic roots, chiseled perfection.

My great grandmother (mothers side) is from Czechoslovakia & gave birth to my grandmother during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, in an army tent. My mom used to say we came from “tough pioneer stock”. Hmmm, wonder if anyone else has heard that saying before? Cheers :)

This isn't actually live. This is definitely the studio cut. Elliott's backup vocals don't sound that clean live. And the synth sounds different live even if it's played note for note which it almost always is. These guys were real pros live.

What memories this brings back
Benjamin Orr was a bad ass. I was 8 years old when their first record came out in 78. Same year as Van Halen's first record. Man, did we have some great music to come of age to or what? Rip Ben and Ric. I love this band, especially the first two records.

@Darren Hanauska - I think Benjamin was looking back at David, to keep his bass playing in sync with the drumming. Drums and bass keep the rhythm. What Benjamin did was playing the backbeat while singing the melody and lyrics at the same time, *and* made it look easy!! Not many bassists sing lead.

Same here, wouldn't have been the late 70s and 80s without them. Always Cars music at every party, beach gathering, you name it. They were our JAM! So thankful I got to see them a few times in the 80s. Still can't believe both Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek are gone now. :(

I found The Cars rather late in life. Once I did though....I was sold. One of my favorite bands ever. Hard to believe some of them are gone. Their legacy shall endure forever though.
