Thanks PhotoZen. Photography has very little to do with cameras - and everything to do with the photographer being prepared to do whatever it takes. How else could Ansel Adams, Cartier Bresson and the other old-time masters have taken such amazing images with such basic cameras? MIKE
I agree so much with the previous comment. Interesting though... how you can receive a million lovely comments but one bad one can concern us so much and make us itch to understand why. Amazing instructor, Great presenter. You can't help but be enthused by watching Mikes video's. I can honestly say I have learnt more in the last 2 weeks having subscribed to your channel than I have over the last 6 months watching other *ahem* Experts. I struggled for months trying to figure out the Exposure triangle in a practical way and within a couple of days of binge watching your video's Mike it has sunk in and now I am seeing the results in my captures. I believe I recognize that coffee cup from the 7 Building Blocks of Photography. Love the video Mike. I often set my subject against a soft background but rarely think to also incorporate a soft object in the foreground. You've given me something to consider moving forward. I look forward to your next installment.

Ha ha - yes that was a continuity error. Though I did once realise I'd left a bag with D600 and X2 2.8 pro lenses on a quayside 3 hours after filming! Someone picked it up and told police. Just goes to show there ARE some good people about - MIKE

Thanks Aline. I suggest you go check a few out in a store and see which feels good to you. You need something strong and sturdy that won't wobble no matter what. And that you find easy to operate. Take your camera, pop it on a few and try them. Don't let the sales person talk you into anything or tell you one is better than another. In this vid I'm using a very old Manfrotto which is all those things but sadly discontinued now.... MIKE

But I have a question, do you have to use a camera lens that has the infinity symbol on it because you said, not to go past the infinity point or can I do this with a 55mm-300mm Nikon lens that doesn't have the infinity symbol on it.
Thank you Michael. Please help me keep them coming by sharing them around with other photographers. Most modern consumer lenses don't have infinity marks on them now. If using autofocus it's not an issue, but focusing manually you just have to watch in case it goes beyond and therefore soft. Yes you can do this kind of shot with any lens... MIKE :-)

Wonderful explanations and examples, as always. As I'm still trying to wrap my mind around these concepts, I have a question. Hypothetically, if I'm shooting at 50mm focal length at f/8, the depth of field would be smaller if I'm closer to the subject and larger if I'm a few steps further back (given focal length and aperture remains the same). Correct? I ask this, because I recently took a family photo at f/8 at 70mm (shutter speed of 1/250s), the person in the front row is in focus, and the person in the second row was slightly out of focus. I figured at f/8 everyone would have been equally in focus, as they were fairly close together... Am I missing something? Thanks.

Do you have your camera set on the center focal point? Is that how you isolate the subject you want?
Mike uses single focal point, so he can control which part specifically in frame he wants to focus. Melissa pp Mike
