Photography Tips - Negative Space in Photography

  • Learning how to use negative space in photography took me a while when I was starting out as a photographer and I get asked about it a lot so we made this photography video to explain. Negative space can enhance a photo and give it peace. It also helps the viewer know where to look and what the image is all about in a way that's more gentle and subtle than leading lines, thirds etc. I'm not saying they're wrong because there are many ways to achieve the same objective, negative space is just one way and as the photographer it's your choice how you put an image together.

    I learned two things from this video: How to use negative space, and to never tie something distracting to your wrist when you photograph! :-)

    Mike, I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks. Got to say I think they are the best I've seen on youtube thus far. I consider myself to be pretty well-versed in photography, but these videos have gotten me to think twice about my approach. I also love how easy your videos are to watch. Very well presented as usual Mike, loved how you used the ballon in the end shot...negative space it hard to get right when starting out. We all love to get close with are zooms and fancy lenses, but stepping back really works better with some shots and knowing when to use it is the real trick. Great stuff, keep them coming...Marcus

    Near the end you said that it's good to introduce something man made into a dull scene. I'd just like to say that it's not necessarily so. The fact that there's nothing man made in a dull scene makes Andreas Gursky's "The Rhine II" so captivating.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love it Scott and am something of a negative space junkie. If you're struggling to find things to photograph, practise really looking at shapes, patterns, light and shade. Don't just walk about hoping to find somethings. Another way is to go see things that inspire and interest you. If you stay somewhere you know well you won't notice the good stuff all around you... MIKE

      Mike Browne ye it's a really cool take on photography. Got into this hobby around november last year. The other day I came across pictures I thought were good when I first had my camera... I went back to shoot the same subjects the other week, as my 'eye' for composition has come a long way since!
      I really enjoy the war memorial sites and subjects. The other subjects im really keen to get photographing is all the old welsh castles dotted around wales!
      When I look at subjects now, I think how would it look to the left, drop lower with a wide angle. From above. From straight on but slightly just off the floor. Closer in, further back, from behind etc. Really enjoying the camera right now.
      Shame I didn't come across your channel sooner. I have been binge watching your videos, the car motion video is brilliant mike!
      Thank you for the video's and effort you put in to making these for us.
