This is his best album on his own and all his whiskeytown is his best band stuff, so grateful I had his music when I was young, there will never be another Ryan ❤
Been a big fan of Ryan Adams starting with his release of Gold in 2001. Had a few of these b-sides that I hadn't listened to in a long time. Listening to this compilation today is kind of like reconnecting with an old friend.
tengo que darte las gracias Scott . I'd never heard "Ghost" before and it is absolutely brilliant. I listened to it twice and am having trouble listening to any other song instead of just going back to listen to it again. Edit a month later: I'm pretty sure I ended up listening to it four times more or less in a row.
Lyrics: 0:01 Angelina Johnny held a picture of you Yeah he kissed it and threw it away Discarded on the avenue Just like all those letters that you threw away Oh, Angelina, you lied Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance With your hair pulled back and a dress Johnny took an airplane back Shuffled his feet on the street in L.A Two hundred dollars and a gunny sack He bought a guitar and sang with a band And he sang: Oh, Angelina, you lied Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance With your hair pulled back and a dress Well job's hard enough when you ain't got a girl And the weekend won't leave you alone And with money to spare and with nights at the end Till he ends up at a pay telephone Said: Oh, Angelina, you lied Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance With your hair pulled back and a dress Oh, Angelina, you lied Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled Oh, Angelina, I'm tired, it's the end of the night Yeah, it's the end of the line
Why in the world was Walls never on an album and why hasn't a country act recorded it for radio by now? It's a guaranteed hit. It works as either alt or straight county song.
Definitely should be on an album. Very nice song but IMHO I don't think it would have been a radio hit. Reminds me a bit of Gene Clark.. ''melodic melancholy''. A slow burner with a chorus that's heavy on ''minor' chords. Not that you asked though! How about Cracks in a Photograph? Dreaming's Free....he could dash these songs off in his sleep back then. Some of his contemporaries' best songs couldn't match his unreleased stuff.
I used to find find live versions of these songs on Napster back in the day. I had a whole compilation of them (wish I could find it). and there was always the sound of a beer bottle rolling around in the background that added to it all.
Wow, a couple of those beauty's I haven't heard for years. Thank you! One of my all time favorites is mega superior gold. Bow to the sad lady ❤️ But choosing is so difficult when it comes to this man's music!
Same here , I kind of had given up on Ryan Adams but on the whole Big Colors is a real tour deforce and return to form. I dipped in a bit and then got sucked in hard. " It's so quiet it's loud" went round my head for weeks. Not so sure why he's so strapped for cash though as , for example, "Fuck the Rain" has over 3 millions plays on Spotify alone.
Am I the only one who always thinks Ryan's unreleased material is better than the official albums. I love all of these. To this day, my favorite RA song (and I'm a huge fan) is Abigail. Song 16 here. The Best! Raises the question: does he not include these songs on purpose for the people who will look for them, or is he just not always the best judge of his own great material. Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who thinks Demolition is his best album.
At least in this era he didnt seem to care about anything other than making music. The curating and released seemed more like a chore. That topped with whatever emotions he has behind the tracks content... Hard to say really. But def leaves a giant playground for us as fans
@@scottwickberg413 It was also probably the choice of the record company what was released. He probably had no say in what was chosen! This has been apparent several times. Shame.
If i could muster the attention long enough to really decide, this would def make my top 5 favs. Maybe even top 3 🤔... That's of course only IF i could ever narrow such a thing down. IF ever, this song makes the list regardless. This performance of it takes it there that much more.
Thanks Scott, I've just realised that I'm missing 3 of these. Never heard of Q Division or Cowboy Technical! This is great. The whole thing is going on my favourites anyway!! Greetings from England!!
Thank you Scott - I have just come across your collection here - a fabulous addition to my/our DRA listening choices, with so much quality all over this :)
Geat job Scott, thanks for putting in the time to make this compilation, I also love Listen To The Radio and California Mix 1 from that period. Good luck!
So much to unpack here. Fool’s Gold is obviously Ryan mimicking Dylan. All Along the Watchtower by way of Dire Straits guitar stylings. Walls is a tribute to Willie? Angelina is just a great song. One for the Rose is brilliant. Idiots Rule the World is sublime. Perfect and True is just that. Amazing.
Ran across all the old mp3 folders from a hdd from college and decided i needed a way to bring all these lost treasures together. Glad you enjoy. I hear there was a bootleg at some point with a similar name, this is just something i pulled together.
Fools Gold is one of the coolest songs nobody has ever heard. A perfect mix of Dylan, Dire Straits, etc... Brilliant! It could be released today, just change the name to CRYPTO
Well, hard to say, I seriously love all of Ryan’s music. I’ve listened to this compilation a few times & his melodies remain so fresh! This time around might be The Last Dance, Fool’s Gold, or Blue and Shy (love that Replacements vibe!) for their electric edge. But Like the Twilight is stunning. This entire set is remarkable IMO 👍
Which tracks Maureen? When were they? Are you talking about the ones Yansley Philip was talking about? If so, I'm guessing Cat Popper but I may be completely wrong!!
"Idiots Rule The World" could have been one of his best songs if he had actually put some effort into the lyrics. The concept, melody, hook and arrangement are fantastic, but the lyrics are seriously weak. What a wasted opportunity.
When you're in a heavily prolific period, you're just writing and recording constantly, so some lyrics you use as placeholders - and then other songs kind of take your attention and the original demo with placeholder lyrics ends up being the only evidence of it. Best singer songwriter ever 👌
Prolific? Yeah. I never tire of Ryan Adams. There is life after Summer of 69
I was missing him when snap....these appeared. A listening gift, so thanks for whomever this was that shared.
I discovered Ryan when he covered 1989. Can’t get enough of his sound.
Nice mix. Nobody makes sad better Ryan Adams.
It isn’t sad, it’s narration and DRA didn’t do it, I did it
This is his best album on his own and all his whiskeytown is his best band stuff, so grateful I had his music when I was young, there will never be another Ryan ❤
Christ just this version of Angelina gets me going. Nice comp.

He should release it! Id do anything to listen to GIMME SUNSHINE in a beautiful place in nature x I wish he would
Unreleased indeed. Google song search suggested a Reba or Jason Alden song when 'Angela' (new favorite song) was playing. lol.
Lyrics:
0:01 Angelina
Johnny held a picture of you
Yeah he kissed it and threw it away
Discarded on the avenue
Just like all those letters that you threw away
Oh, Angelina, you lied
Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled
Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance
With your hair pulled back and a dress
Johnny took an airplane back
Shuffled his feet on the street in L.A
Two hundred dollars and a gunny sack
He bought a guitar and sang with a band
And he sang:
Oh, Angelina, you lied
Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled
Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance
With your hair pulled back and a dress
Well job's hard enough when you ain't got a girl
And the weekend won't leave you alone
And with money to spare and with nights at the end
Till he ends up at a pay telephone
Said:
Oh, Angelina, you lied
Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled
Oh, Angelina, you went to the town hall dance
With your hair pulled back and a dress
Oh, Angelina, you lied
Oh, Angelina, you did it and smiled
Oh, Angelina, I'm tired, it's the end of the night
Yeah, it's the end of the line
