    Emily, what a wonderful video. Thank you very much for putting this together.
    The opening section contains some fascinating insights into the genesis and original performance context of the piece. I had no idea that Debussy was so dismissive of the theme of Psyche when it was first suggested to him, nor that he procrastinated so badly over his contribution. As much as we revere Debussy today, actually collaborating with him must have been a nightmare.
    As for your performance analysis, there are so many fantastic take-home points here that I had to replay a few times and take notes. I hadn't been aware of Debussy's probable meaning with commas in his scores; with your comments in mind I'll be looking again at my breathing places throughout. However, the single biggest revelation to me was that dim. in the second-to-last bar, which is indeed misprinted in my edition (Jobert) as an accent and as such defies any sort of musical sense. I did a big facepalm when I saw Debussy's true dynamic for that bar!
    Your channel is such an excellent resource for flute players everywhere - so thank you, again, for all your efforts. I count your collection of videos as one of the few good things to come out of this whole sorry Covid mess.

    Emily, thank you for this extremely helpful and illuminating video. I am learning to play this on my Baroque voice flute (at A= 415 so the end result is at Debussy's pitch), and your detailed observations were invaluable!

    The dotted main theme has often played in various r h y t h m i c a l changes. Since it is published in one e q u a l written notes , why do players prefer an improvization in b o t h octaves of the main theme ? an artistic c h a n g e of performance should stick on the exact rhythmic written notes which may enrich the A r t of Syrinx.

    • @EmilyBeynonflute
      @EmilyBeynonflute  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I think the art is in playing what’s written as accurately as possible whilst SOUNDING free!!! Thanks for watching!

      @@EmilyBeynonflute The freedom of p e r f o r m a n c e is an inevitable consideration of exactness of the written material , not a separate factor in itself.
