Some of Ian's Gun Collection, on a Matrix Armory Display Wall

Matrix Armory is a new gun display system developed by Jeff High (a long-time Forgotten Weapons supporter, incidentally) who wanted something that would really do justice to guns that you want to display and appreciate. The other sorts of display/racking systems out there are much more industrial in style, primarily to store guns. Matrix Armory was designed to make your guns look their best, because nothing is quite as sad as a great gun collection squashed into a safe and never actually seen (assuming one has a secure room for display, naturally).
I have gotten a lot of people asking to see my own personal collection, and so I figured this would be a cool way to do that; showing you some of the highlights of my collection in conjunction with the Matrix Armory wall we installed in my office. I have no financial stake in the product - I think the years of work Jeff has put into it have led to a really nice product that I think will be of interest to some of the folks who read Forgotten Weapons.

This video perfectly encapsulates the reasons why in my opinion, Forgotten Weapons (in tandem with InRange), is the best firearms channel on TH-cam (and on the internet in general). Ian doesn't seem like a gun-nut who also happens to just dig history, nor does he seem like a History buff who got bitten by the gun-bug. He displays a perfect fusion where historical significance meets novel mechanics. Not overly concerned with the minute pros and cons, nor the tacti-cool applications. Every weapon on that wall tells a unique story, be it through its pedigree or its mechanical idiosyncrasies. It's hard to find another channel that presents almost contagious passion for the subject matter and that breaks the common stereotype of the American gun owner, while also being lighthearted and humorous. For that, I appreciate the hell out of both Ian and Karl and what they've managed to do over the years.
EDIT: That came out way more kiss-assish than I intended.

That is a sergeant's machine made katana though. It is not trying to pass itself off as "the best sword ever" it is just something that was made to fulfill a practical purpose. It is just a Japanese military saber, and there is nothing to flame war over in that case. By the way, on the paradigm of katanas, where one side says "Katanas suck" and the other side says "katanas are the best sword ever capable of (insert crazy assertion)" I am of the "they are swords, good at what they were actually made to do, but not great where their design would make them obviously weak." Basically I am of the sane side.

    • @thusspakevespasian5587
      @thusspakevespasian5587 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

It is not the Japanese military sabre, they had one of those at the turn of the century and it was actually half-decent, that's a shin-gunto, it's basically just propaganda masquerading as a weapon and half of them aren't even up to that standard and have stainless steel blades. (I do kinda find it funny, how despite how both the Germans and the Japanese killed off their warriors, the Teutonic Knights and Samurai, respectively, they both used them for propaganda reasons)

@no candy Allow me to nuance the shit out of this: the 2011-2012 type 27" iMacs were excellent devices, because they were heavily serviceable - the screen and glass popped right off and all the parts were replaceable. Their only achilles heels were the fact that they shipped with hard drives, not SSDs, and the fact that they used dedicated graphics cards at a time when such cards were very likely to fail eventually. And because the cards are a mac-specific variant part with a limited lifespan, they're now very expensive and risky to obtain on eBay.
However, what Ian has there is a (2013 onwards ish?) slim edge iMac, the model that persists to the present day, which is better in that it either doesn't have a dedicated graphics card or it has one that's well outside the reach of the Nvidia-defect-2000s period and is therefore more reliable, and better in that it almost certainly has an SSD; but MUCH worse in that the screen is held on entirely with thick adhesive strips which have to be broken and then renewed every time you disassemble it. These strips aren't too expensive on eBay right now, but they may become unavailable, and the process is very time consuming anyway, and they put a finite limit on how often you'll ever want or be able to service them.
However, if the lack of serviceability doesn't put you off, there are strong points in favour of the iMac as an all-in-one. It shares all the weaknesses of AiOs generally - it lives and dies with its motherboard, to which almost everything is directly attached; its power supply, screen assembly and other spare parts are horribly expensive to replace; it's hard to work on; it has no upgradeability or modularity, no expansion bays and no connections for external secondary displays (I don't think? there's a D-sub-looking connector on the back of Ian's but I'm not sure it really is a D-sub, I would be surprised). But for all that, if you're set on having an AiO, it's still a better proposition than most OEM Windows-based AiOs, because the stand and body strength are superb, the specs are good, the screen panel is simply gorgeous and the cooling solutions are rather better designed than in some competing brands' AiOs.
It's also worth mentioning that most iMacs don't suffer from the lack of connectivity options that is generating a large backlash against the newer iPhones and Macbooks as devices. iMacs - at least ones like Ian's, I haven't checked this year's offerings yet - still have USB ports and audio ports. There are certain years which I believe even have a combinatin of USB 3 and Lightning, giving you the best of both worlds. Still a shame that Apple refuse to put USB C on them, because it directly competes with Lightning for standard dominance, but hey - big companies will try to rule the world one competing standard at a time.
The big caveat to any appraisal of an iMac's positive qualities is the same caveat that applies to any positive appraisal of an Apple product - they're far too expensive at retail for what they are, compared to the market as a whole. The only course I ever advise people to take is to try and find a good, well-cared-for iMac second-hand, because the Apple prices are just silly.
      Nerdman away!

My father has a small gun collection, but they’re not for shooting. They are on display in his office behind glass cases... they are all very expensive, I don’t understand why he continues to buy these very expensive guns. He used to have an FG-42, it wasn’t functional, but he kept it looking good. He sold it because he wanted to buy a fishing boat, and he didn’t have enough for it at the time. There are so many weird guns in there! He’s looking into buying a used and messed up to hell MP44. He says he’s gonna restore it, I do think that will be something cool to look at. He is attempting to build a bolt action rifle from scratch in his shed, he lets me help sometimes with the screws and woodwork for the stock. He says if I do really good in school, I can have his Mosin-Nagant. I’m really excited for that. I only have my little 22 from when I was younger and a Henry gun my grandpa gave me that looks like it’s straight out of a Western Movie. I think I’d like to start my own collection when I’m older, I’m seventeen now.

Thank you so very much Ian, I once had a rather impressive collection myself. Though due to health issues I had to let them go one by one, some of them unfortunately had immense sentimental value, an Egyptian FN 49 in 8mm mauser, an early SKS brought back from Vietnam and many others, colts, Winchesters and an old Remington bolt action military rifle with a detachable box mag in 45-70 Gvt, it had odd screws with almost acme like threads. An old 1873 colt in 41 colt that was brought back from post war Japan it was in an officer pilots locker was nickel plated and had strange shrunken plastic (bakelite?) Grips with a bison head motif. I wonder what the story on that pistol was it was a 5 digit sn.

    • @extrastuff9463

I don't live over there, but from what I remember its pretty much impossible to get as an individual. If you own a gunshop the entity that is your store can obtain a licence to have those weapons available for potential sale or something (which then is also allowed to be used by selected employees of said store).
It was a weird construction, but the short version is: as a person not gonna happen, gotta be some kind of government organisation or own/be employed by a dealer in firearms and have the right paperwork. Pre 1986 (if I remember the year right?) that were registered properly is just about the only exception I know of for imported automatic firearms, after that I think there are some domestically produced firearms allowed but I don't know the details since its never relevant to me because I don't live there.

Extra stuff unless he is living in a weird state he doesn’t need any license for a full auto, just a complete background check an ATF tax stamp and a 6 month waiting period. There are also some guns made past 86 that can be sold, it’s not illegal for companies to sell autos made past 86 they just have to get it put on an atf list (a list the atf hates expanding, the real barrier). All in all, 300 dollar tax stamp and a few dealer fees is the only added cost federallh

Ok so first thing first Ian your knowledge and your willingness to pass that knowledge is something truly special. Secondly when you pulled down that Arisaka that was brutally removed from it's soldier I got chills. But just had to say that I absolutely love the way you present information, and after all if we as a species choose to remain ignorant to the past and don't take the time to study it, it's bound to repeat itself. I for one have always loved history and I realized early that if it's ignored and if it does get the opportunity to repeat, it's probably going to try and hit even harder the second time around. I do suppose that maybe we'll get lucky and the old saying that the generals of this war are still fighting like it's the last war. Classic example Hitler and his profound love for the kar98 prevented him from seeing the progression of modern combat until it was too late. Thank goodness for small favors.

What I would be really interested in though would be a way to display my hand planes... do you know if there are any plans to expand the range of hardware to accommodate other types of items beyond weapons specifically, It would seem a terrible waste of effort to develop a system like this and then tie it to such a niche market...well healed gun collectors with a bunker are way out numbered by tool tragics like me.

Tim McCauley I believe you would only have to change the hooks so they probably would be open to a special order to accommodate your collection.

I’m a country dweller too so I’ve got the critter control type rifles,22,410,and a 12 gauge
My collection wall is made up of my grandfathers hand tools, drills, augers and a few others. He was a carpenter at a local dairy and worked on their horse drawn milk wagons.

Your personal respect for firearms and the history that comes with them is exactly why I love this channel.
The fact that you have the Arisaka with the burn marks goes to show thar for me.
You respect the craftsmanship and the history. But never would you want to see these used for harm. Skill shooting and target practice? Absolutely. But never aimed at a person.
And the fact that throughout you also observe proper gun safety and never point the guns at the camera is just a minor detail to some. But I respect that soooo much.

I’m proud of myself because I was able to accurately identify all of the modern rifles he displayed here. I say this because I haven’t seen a CETME or a FAL like those since I read about them in my coveted book The World’s Great Small Arms, way back in 2003 when I was in middle school. I was really doubting myself. Especially proud of identifying that Colt Commando since that muzzle is unmistakable on that gun. I’ve always wanted to fire one of those...alas.
    Great collection, good sir.
