A well paced and nicely explained video, thanks for taking the time to make this. I loved this game when I originally played it all those years ago. I've bought the Enhanced Edition to play through again, really looking forward to diving back into the excellent story!
Man, I got this game when it first came out in 99. I loved this game as well as Baldur's Gate. Might have to go back and play the enhanced version myself.
For me this is still the better written, with better narrative, videogame of all times. I've played most of the rpgs, old and modern, classic and japanese, but Planescape is still unmatched. You can see it's written by a person with a literature degree (I don't mean to bash anyone, I'm just stating a fact. That doesn't mean other writers without a degree might not be as good). Of course it's old, it comes with its limits and such, it's rather a heavy game, probably half way between a book and a rpg for nowadays standards. It literally drowns you in text all the time, and for our ADHD-packed times that is definitely an issue. This said, I've never found a better story with a better involvement for the player than this.
I lucked out on what my first CRPGs were and they set a high bar standard that many games that followed didn't reach. I played three CRPGs as they were released: Fallout 1, Baldur's Gate 1 and Planescape: Torment. All three of those games are solid A+ when it comes to world building and setting and only Planescape: Torment didn't have great combat to go along with such superb settings. PT reminds quite a bit of Elden Ring in that they are both incredibly inscrutable, mysterious and mesmerizing, especially at their start. PT does a little bit of hand holding but for the most part you have little information about your PC including the fact you can change your class from fighter to a thief or wizard!! All the the NPCs that can join your party are also incredibly unique. Great review and anybody who hasn't played this one but likes games that deliver the unexpected or unique realities this is a game for you. Ignore the rough combat. Seriously, who doesn't want top lay an immortal with some mysterious connection to Sigil, the city of infinite doors that lead to infinite places.
First played it when I was 10 or so... Didn't understand a lot of stuff this game offers. But I've enjoyed it greatly nonetheless and I replayed it couple times in the 14 years since my first time. Every playthrough I realize something new I missed on the previous ones. A gem of a game
I’ve got to say, I have been watching a lot of your videos lately Mortum and on top of a few other reasons your videos and especially your passion for CRPGS has really kicked my journey into them down a Rabbit hole, im playing 4 different ones at once (including this)
Totally love this, and I played the EE version earlier this year. Still a fascinating story-line with wonderfully complex characters with tales to tell 😍
Used to play this game some time back on pc, haven't finished it yet. Plan to play again or buy from Google play for my tab or phone. Interesting story. Thanks for the review!
I played this game right after it came out as a HUGE Black Isle fangirl by that point already (and who cut my teeth on D&D in the pre-3.x days with a DM who ran a Planescape campaign for us) and it blew my high expectations out of the water. Flaws and all, it remains the best story in CRPGs bar none and I have replayed it so many times over the years.
yeah I love Planescape Torment, when I finished this game for the first time I was so disappointed because I knew I would never find another game like it.
@@alexoelkers2292 I actually really enjoyed the characters and story, but it feels like a game/systems that are a vehicle for the story rather than a strong game/strong systems with a strong story and characters hand-in-hand. It's kind of a skeleton of a game around very good writing, good character work, interesting choices with thoughtful consequences, etc.
@@YouTubdotCub I really enjoyed the writing of "Disco Elysium". There were times I just burst out laughing. The story itself wasn't amazing but I appreciated the dialog. "Tyranny" I really enjoyed as well. The writing wasn't nearly as good as Planescape but you should really give it a try if you haven't already.
This is still one of my favorite games of all time. Let's put it this way: I bounced right off both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (mostly because I'm not a fan of the Infinity Engine) but I've got a P:T tattoo that I still think looks cool. :D And it's not just nostalgia. I recently replayed it after having not touched the game for almost 20 years and the writing holds up for me.
The writing is what makes it timeless. Story, characters in the party, the unraveling of the plot in both present and past, different ways to do quests - it all stands up to time. I've never played D&D, so in 20 years and multiple playthroughs I've never quite figured out the combat system and certain stats, which in turn made combat, usage of items and spells very tedious and frustrating - and none of it didn't matter to me anyway, this is one of the best games I've ever played and can replay forever.
One does not just bounce off BG. You just weren't ready. Especially so for someone who says it's because they hate the engine but have a tattoo based on a game with the same engine.
Hah, found the review :) It's great to see that you've covered PS:T! It's my favourite CRPG of all times, I don't know how many times I've played through it just to immerse myself in the story again. The point you make about customising your character is absolutely true; particularly the options to lie or tell the truth have always stood out in my mind as unique and a great way to make the Nameless One yours. I would love to see this implemented in more games! My favourite moment besides for Ravel's question is when you meet O of the divine alphabet; the shoutout to that scene in Tides of Numenera was pretty fun too. Anyways, I kinda see the game as pretty philosophical. Dealing with questions of how to live your life, how actions and intentions can change one's path, and the power of belief. I really need to DM a campaign in that setting again... but, I am rambling :) Have you ever managed to get Adahn to materialise?
Currently playing this game. At first, I felt very hard to adapt into this kind of genre (western rpg). I came from jrpg like chrono trigger, final fantasy series, and xenogears. So far the story is quite interesting to follow even though too many narrative to read
@@dominika3762 yeah, after finished that game I think that is one of the most deepest story of any video game I ever played. This game bring new experience to play game and made me realize that video game can be a strong medium to tell deep story
I dont mind the NPC dialogue. Its good world building. Sure it might not effect the plot directly, but its all helping you understand the world and honestly most of the those side conversations are optional anyway.
I would so love to see this game ported to a modern engine and ui. Tried to get into it again with the enhanced editions along with bg and turns out 15 years has spoiled me to the old isometric dnd games that I sunk so many hours into as a youth. Would love to play thru it but not enough to be inconvenienced with how big my backlog always is.

I'm playing that game these days, a really great story! I also played the first edition 20 years ago, but only for a while. Now I can fully enjoy the game.
Something interesting I wish more games copied is just how perfect the DnD alignment system (Chaos-Law, Evil-Good, Neutral) is for roleplay in a video game. Conversation trees in games have to be limited and can only give a player around 3 responses to a situation, but thanks to the 3x3 chart they feel like meaningful character choices. For example when your characters first learns about debt slavery they may have a reaction like: "It's a good way to pay their debt to society" (lawful) "Slavery is always wrong" (good) or "I wonder if I could buy someone?" (evil) And while it's just a fun personality survey for the most part, seeing where your actions put you by the end of the game, there are some items like the Deva's sword that onyl Lawful Good players can use, and party NPCs' attitude changes based on how you treat them.
@MortismalGaming this gives me strong Soul reaver/ shadowman vibes plotwise, especially the former. Would you reccomend it to someone who want to start playing cRPG's in general ? i don't mind turn based combat (i've played some o.g squaresoft jrpgs like final fantasy, vagrant story, parasite eve) and from what i've seen planetscape have a lot more depth to it (which is a good thing)

Never could get into this game. Made it about 6 hours in last time, but I always tire of it. BG1 and 2 are my favorite games. Also got only a few hours into IWD before quitting it permanently.
I cried regretfully and cathartically while playing this game. It's the only time I've cried while playing a video game and I've been playing my whole life. That's all you need to know.
I have never played this game myself. But others I know rave about the story as well. One of my friends who runs d&d is a huge Planescape fan. I've played in the setting a number of times. It's one of my favorite d&d settings. Prolly second only to Forgotten realms in my opinion.
I don't know if today's gamers have the patience for this game. It is my favorite RPG ever, but I am old school and grew up on the classics, so I loved having the option to avoid combat at times and the copious amount of text was so well written it never seemed like a chore to read.
It would be nice, if Hasbro would allow some kind of sequel to this incredible game. One that is set in the Planescape universe and with some of the original characters.
Got it for mobile after 5m in. Looks great. Sadly don't have the time to sit at a PC and delve into it. I played baldur's gate 1 and 2 during my childhood so I think I'll love this one. I had no idea it was linked to D&D as well. It was always that game my mom wouldn't let me buy because the cover looked like some horror game. Lol (I got baldurs gate through ebay and told the guy to repackage the disc's so there was no skull and such. #strats)
A truly wonderful game. My only issues are that there's not much replayability and that one of the joinable NPCs appears very late and another is a tedious grind to get. Otherwise an outstanding game and still playable today.
Can't watch due to plans of playing through all of the Classics for the first time, do you know anywhere cheap to get the following (Steam)? Planescape Torment EE Neverwinter Nights EE Baldur's Gate EE (+ DLC, Dragonspear) Baldur's Gate 2 EE Icewind Dale EE
You said you werent gonna discuss about the story, and then near the end you reveal bits about the characters' connections to the nameless one, which to me is kind of a spoiler 😂 I've played this game when it came out and have forgotten everything about it, except the fact that it's awesome. It's on sale for the switch right now, until february 4th 🍻
I found it interesting that Wisdom was one of the most important stats in this game. It makes sense, but it’s not something that’s embraced in most games.
Yeah I bought this not too long after it came out and was pretty amazing. I could never beat it though because it was so different from all the other games I'd played. I cut my teeth on things like Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy and the Gold Box games. Combat was the main focus so I played it like that, killing everything, and that can be a bad time. I bought it off GoG three years ago and have yet to boot it up but as soon as I'm done with GTA San Andreas which I never got to beat back in the day either this is my next one.
This game despite it's flaws remains my favourite game of pretty much all times. Story and the setting is just *chefs kiss*. I was really dissapointed in Numenera that painted itself as a successor in a way but I just could not get into it....
Did you just replay it after Kotor and PoE? I got halfway through the game about 2 years ago and was loving it but had to pause it for a while and now have forgotten everything and would need to restart it.
I really want to play this game i saw it on the PS store bundled with Icewind Dale i just need to finish my current list of old games Iwant to play. That list just keeps getting bigger 😂
No, I don't think there was. Fall-from-Grace was, if I remember this correctly, Lawful Good. Basically a redemption angel in the body of a succubus, and dressed like a demure nun. If you already know this, and your question actually is "was there a fallen angel?", the answer is again, sadly, no.
I recall this games reviews being a non 0 amount of the reason that when they kinda rebooted how the dnd universe looks that it's setting was kept in. That might be apocryphal nonsense with my elder milennial brain slowly rotting tho.
My main complaint about Torment was that if you realized going in it was more a "talking" based story game than a combat game, you could min-max all your skill point into Charisma/Wisdom/Intelligence and pretty much ignore Strength/Dexterity/Constitution and "talk" your way through the entire game always getting the best dialogue options for everything. Yes doing that makes what little combat is in the game difficult, but that's what companions are for.
watch in 144p for maximum authenticity
Also degrade the sound

I don't know if today's gamers have the patience for this game. It is my favorite RPG ever, but I am old school and grew up on the classics, so I loved having the option to avoid combat at times and the copious amount of text was so well written it never seemed like a chore to read.
Are you going to do a story recap for this like divinity or baldur's gate?
#strats)
Should I pick it up for switch?
A truly wonderful game. My only issues are that there's not much replayability and that one of the joinable NPCs appears very late and another is a tedious grind to get. Otherwise an outstanding game and still playable today.
I'll fight anyone to the death who doesn't agree that TOEE is the greatest CRPG ever made. :)
Not even close to Baldur's Gate for me 😁
@@felicemastronzo8827 Pistols or poniards at dawn, sir!! :)
Can't watch due to plans of playing through all of the Classics for the first time, do you know anywhere cheap to get the following (Steam)?
Planescape Torment EE
Neverwinter Nights EE
Baldur's Gate EE (+ DLC, Dragonspear)
Baldur's Gate 2 EE
Icewind Dale EE
Yeah all that is on steam
Check Steam and GoG, they both run sales at different times. Fanatical will also have them on sale occasionally (they sell Steam Keys)
You said you werent gonna discuss about the story, and then near the end you reveal bits about the characters' connections to the nameless one, which to me is kind of a spoiler 😂
I've played this game when it came out and have forgotten everything about it, except the fact that it's awesome. It's on sale for the switch right now, until february 4th 🍻
*I've updated my journal*
What can change the nature of a man? As a 30 years old to me its experience and/or regret.
Like the game, himself. Only a man can change himself.
Why not post a link of Mr. Rex' (Mr recs?) video in your description? I can't find his video after searching for him. Thanks
4,50€ on Steam rn (28.05.2022)
I have the original pc physical, all 5+ CDs in the neat folder. Also just bought this along with icewindale on steam for $1 off of humble bundle.
This game despite it's flaws remains my favourite game of pretty much all times. Story and the setting is just *chefs kiss*. I was really dissapointed in Numenera that painted itself as a successor in a way but I just could not get into it....
u gotta try it again. in my mind one of the best games i have played. gonna play this at some point too
Great game and speaking of Planescape is a great setting for table top without using any Wotc stuff
Great review as always
How do you 100% this game?
so it wasn't just me, I really was reading too much text and felt sleepy through out the game.
the amount of reading makes these games hard to get into for me, but baldurs gate 2 showed me that a lot of the dialogue is worth it
Did you just replay it after Kotor and PoE? I got halfway through the game about 2 years ago and was loving it but had to pause it for a while and now have forgotten everything and would need to restart it.
I got 100% on it back in 2017, it's one of my favorites so the memory stays pretty fresh.
I really want to play this game i saw it on the PS store bundled with Icewind Dale i just need to finish my current list of old games Iwant to play. That list just keeps getting bigger 😂
Was there another companion, and angel basically incompatible with “everyone’s favorite character”?
No, I don't think there was. Fall-from-Grace was, if I remember this correctly, Lawful Good. Basically a redemption angel in the body of a succubus, and dressed like a demure nun. If you already know this, and your question actually is "was there a fallen angel?", the answer is again, sadly, no.
Just finished the game. I hated playing it but loved experiencing it
Great review
I can’t believe you spoiled the thing about Morte!! In any case, just finished the game and I feel like a part of me has died with it (wink)
Is this a spoiler free review?
No
Best RPG ever made. I even like the fighting.
Also noone mentiones epic spells
Couldn't you have many as one as a rogue in your party?? Did he appear in another game as a companion?? So confused
Thank u for speaking this game
Your review has inspired me to stick with it. I'm on my third attempt and always seem to lose interest. Which was my issue with Baldur's Gate
Does this video have spoilers?
Yes, it does.
40yrs gaming and not looked at these games, too much reading i thought.. now im waiting for BG3 and got bg2 and now looking at this... hhmm shall i?
I recall this games reviews being a non 0 amount of the reason that when they kinda rebooted how the dnd universe looks that it's setting was kept in. That might be apocryphal nonsense with my elder milennial brain slowly rotting tho.
But the high level spell animations are straight up amazing. You have to play a caster just to see them.
First! Huzza! Great game - looking forward to your review :-)
Annah is annoying as hell 🤮 but this video totally updated my journal 😂
my all-time favorite game that isn't a Zelda
Obviously top 1 game, but I wonder why Arcanum is so underrated, could be top 2-5
It’s a masterpiece
they don't make them like this anymore.
Why is that a complaint?
