Drove trucks for 32 years and most of them were in R model Macks. Favorite one was a purple twin stick tri-axle with a 275 horse turbo intercooled engine. Aluminum frame made it's empty weight around 25k. I could haul 27 tons and haul ass. Loved that old truck. Ran circles around the newer trucks I ran with. Thanks for the memories fellas. It's an old R model gentlemen, we KNOW it's gonna start. Them old macks were unbeatable. I actually had the very same transmission in mine.... my favorite part was having 5 gears in reverse. As we all know, site trucks spen alot of time backing up.
I noticed it at 3:23 next to the drivers side windshield wiper arm! Back to the video, where is that popcorn at? Budd wheels on that girl makes it more presentable to the folks around the world. Think on how long it would take to fill the box with firewood
Your story about the oxygen tube makes me think of a true story that happened to me. After back surgery in 1991 I had a catheter in. In the morning a nurse came in the room and as usual asked how I was feeling, I told her I didn’t feel very well. She checked the catheter and said, here’s the problem, the hose is kinked. She straightened it out and the bag filled up in about 2 seconds and I gave a sigh of relief.

Wow. An old 5X2 Duplex. My Dad had a 59 B model with a 5X4 Quadraplex. He taught me how to drive in that old tractor. He could shift that old twin stick as smooth as silk. I really miss him. Merry Christmas everyone.
Hank, You and Wiley and y'all's families have a Merry Christmas. Enjoyed the video. I used to drive an old Mack like that with what we called a 6 speed transmission in it in the log woods for a pull out truck. It began as a single frame truck and we broke the frame and had it doubled to hold up in the woods.
I had no doubt that old beast would start. I got my 1st CDL on one of those old two stick Macks. I love those old Macks. Id make that into a pick up truck. They are tough as tough comes.
Dang it Hank, you did it again. I spent seven years with RD Macks in the waste disposal industry with the split window, air wipers, and the HVAC system that I was always banging my knee on. I have never seen a RD with a twin stick. From what I understand, the first lever is the compound and the other is the mains. So you would put the main in first and shift the compound from low to direct, then high, then shift the main into second, put the compound in low and do it all over again. I remember slogging through a muddy landfill with 25 cubic yards of garbage behind me and I didn't need the power divider. That's Mack tough. I enjoyed the video, and I hope you find another Mack that can be saved. Old Macks never die. They just get new owners.

The shifter closest is a 5 speed the other shifter has low, reverse, and direct . Put many miles on trucks just like that with the Mack 237, horsepower and the 285 horsepower. Both good engines, the 285 would out accelerate the 237 but the 237 could keep up with the 285 at highway speeds pulling dump trailers
My buddy has a 88 r model that came with the mud stick and the endt 676 285 he swapped the mud stick for a 12 spd Mack gearbox night and day difference
2 stick 6 speed transmission. 5 speed reverse . You can progressively shift in reverse 1st through 5th with that transmission. , I can speak with a Dump bed , take compound out (neutral) , put the main in Your choice of gear selection 1-5 with PTO engaged , I usually stayed somewhere between 3rd & 5th with pto.engaged . But gotta be quick with it in 5th. That bed will raise upon you quick . 87 was the last year for the 2 stick 6 speed. 65, to 72 the dash was Steel & Green , 73 to 84 they had the beige dash 85 & above the dashboard was grey . Merry Christmas Hank & Wiley ! Mack
Those old Mack’s used be known as an arm breaker. Having to shift from low to high while switching gears made you have to put your arm through the steering wheel while shifting and without power steering if you were off road or hit a pothole and the wheel jerked, well there’s the broken arm.
Its a 6 speed transmission. 5 speed main and a compound with low direct and reverse. You only use low in 1 st. No need for 2 hand shifting. You have time to light a smoke between shifts.
Yep. You don't split the gears with that trans. Only need low range when you get off the road or in a tight spot. Worked at a gravel pit in 71 they had a B model Mack, thermodyne, no turbo, 2 stick, 5x4 trans, Mack called it a quadraplex trans. Pulling a dump trailer. The guy who drove that used all 20 gears every time. Stuck one hand through the steering wheel to shift the main box up one while he shifted the four speed from 4th back to 1st. I had a little experience later on with another B model with a triplex trans, but I never got the hang of shifting both sticks at the same time. It's a lost art.
@@carlwilliams1570 correct, only the old duplex, triplex, and quad boxes did you need to shift like that and only if you were in a turn going straight you just took your hands off the steering wheel and held the wheel straight with your knee. My first truck was a 1956 LJ Mack.
@@robjustlooking8729 I started working on trucks in 1982 and we worked on a lot of older equipment from the 60s and 70s. There was one transmission that you had to go shift through one gear to get to another. I don't remember what transmission it was I was pretty young at the time. You had to move the gear shifter up against the spring loaded detent, shift into the gear, then move the selector over again to finally get to the other gear. It was in a IH firetruck and it was the only one I ever saw.
There's no worries on a twin stick one stick is for shifting gears the other stick is for high and low range it doesn't really get interesting until you get into the three sticks
