I think the rapport you two have & your easy-going conversation is every bit as important as your action. & I am very thankful that you keep it family friendly because my 8 year old nephew loves your channel!
Wiley, "I see the dipstick!" as he's looking at Hank. Seeing those old trucks sure brings back a lot of memories. Ducky Johnson's crews were top notch at moving buildings including my house.
1) You guys have me wanting to go pick up some lemon cookies when I'm at the store next. 2) You're always fun to watch, and get me motivated to work on my own projects. 3) I'll never be able to catch up with all your videos, and that's fantastic! Keep it up!
Merry Christmas guys. Cummins put out a 903 and 555. 903 (295 hp) was awesome in its day. 555 (180 hp?) was not so good, Head gaskets being main issue. Very common in Australia and New Zealand.
Hank in the video clip of Wiley loading the skidded, he asks about a better way to release parking brake. How about using a porta power hand pump? Make a hyd hose with a fitting on one end that will screw on to the skidder the other end of the hose have a hyd rated ball valve screwed onto that end, next attach the porta power quick release to the other end of the ball valve. Open valve handle use the pump to release the brake then close off the valve handle and remove porta power pump. Brakes stay released until valve handle is opened to release pressure.
Those were a decent engine despite what the bulk of the truckers said about them. With that being said, what I learned about them they were first started up production in 1967. Non-turbo versions were nothing that set the world on fire and I think they were noted for crankshaft failures. I had a couple of Massey tractors that supported a 903. They were like 280 on non-turboed and then about 320 for the turboed. But on the flip side government use them extensively and I think they still may even produce them for military. With the latest versions being 600 horsepower. For an engine that was basically going to be Cummins answer to a Detroit 871. My pulling tractors use them V8 blocks 903 from marine version. They respond pretty good on alcohol fuel and 4 turbos . They actually wanted to make them totally illegal because they ran so good and check to pulling.
The Big Brake and throttle pedal on the floor was like the mack, that's made so you can toe and heal the throttle and the brake when you're downshifting
Great video, thank you for sharing, i hope you guys and yours have a Blessed Christmas and a happy and safe 2023, God Bless you all, Mark from Australia! 😀
Merry Christmas hank and Wiley. Thank you for the videos throughout this year and look forward to what you guys have for us in 2023! God bless you both!
There is nothing more fascinating than "turning rust"🙂! Tools needed: a crescent wrench / adjustable spanner, a set of batteries, maybe a crowbar for checking whether the engine is locked - and that's it!
Where I used to work there was a big twin turbo v block cummins that was used as the starting device for a 20MW Westinghouse gas turbine generator. The whole setup was from the 1960s.
Yes guys ! It's a 903 Cummings ! These things have to wind up like an old Detroit Diesel engine to stay together. Put many a mile on one of these old engines!! So excited to even see one these old dinosaurs !! Please make it run !!
I thought that was a VT903 at first glance, however after seeing the top of the engine I would say that's the dreaded "triple nickel". A Cummins 555 V-8. Very similar to the IH DV-550. More gasoline engine than diesel engine but still very popular. I got very good service from both in mobile home toters.
Chinese micrometer akk adustatable wrench@ 00:10 , .Those cookies have the dad and grandad bodybuilder seal of approval. I worked for a company that had the loadstars for transit mix . They were pretty tough . Thwy had the inline cummins
I’m a yankee and I love to listen to you guys. I have many good friends from the south. So tell those critics to lay off. Love your videos. Happy new year.
Wiley 4Ton HF porta power. Remove line from breaks, Hook up adaptor fitting. Connect Porta power and pump up to relise breaks. save fitting for next job. Keep it with PP for next time
That is a 903 Cummins diesel for sure. I worked on several of those while in the army. They were used in the Bradley infantry and Cavalry fighting vehicles
Merry Christmas Gentlemen, to you and yours of the HF family. Thank you for your channel, even if you don’t always succeed with it running, you always give it your best try!😊
Thanks for a great year of videos! MERRY CHRISTMAS, and GOD Bless to all. Looking forward to next adventures, hope all is Merry and bright, or at least dazed and confused
Those trucks are nice. That heavy-duty style frame with the high ground clearance were used for all kinds of heavy hauling trucks. Everything from heavy quarry dumpers to logging rigs and house movers. The big V8 Cummins sounds good even if it isn't the most powerful thing ever. :)
As a VT903 owner, this engine doesn't sound like a 903 natural, or otherwise. All 903's had the PT pump in the valley. Looks more like a 555 judging by the rocker covers and exhaust manifolds which seems odd in a double frame rail truck, the cans on the back look like wedge brakes as others have said.
Talk, and work, the correct balance = good video. I know these things for certain: I'm 69 years old, live in Florida, and I should be hanging out with you guys. I have a bad hip, which did not stop me from rapidly going upstairs carrying a load, also 2-blown discs, which had never bothered me for the 35 years between their occurring, and when I broke the femur on the bad hip leg. Now I am falling apart more than mended. I realized this seeing Wiley pick those batteries up with his fingertips, lift them and set them out. Before the hip went out,I routinely lifted a 355Lb high voltage transformer into/out of the bed of a pickup truck, they had away to install the hook points, or insert steel rods through the edge flange to lift it with a hoist, but setting it up and putting it away took an hour, and I could pick it up with my fingertips by the flanges. The thought of batteries gave realization I would have to 'work my way back up' to that. THAT man Wiley is a HOSS!😎
You could use the hydralic from a running skidder and a longer hose to pressuriz the parking brake use a quick conncet fitting it will hold the pressure in
Back in 1988 i worked over in SC at the Bad creek hydroelectric project above lake Jocassie ...we had 3 IH loadstar 4000's all 3 had VT903's they were numbered 502,503.and504 i had 504 12 yrds of concrete that sucker would fly i had the fastest of the 3.......the other 2 had 10 spds mine had a 13 spd
Merry Christmas to you Hank & you're Family & May Wiley also have Merry Christmas & May you both have Wonderful New year Take care Always God Bless you All eh
Awesome morning it's cold here in lucedale Mississippi !!!! To cold for my old bones !!!! Pray yall are doing well !! Just stopping by to see yall again !!!!! Merry Christmas yall Pray yall have an awesome day !!!
I love you guys, Hank knows my music, and Wiley has the jokes, well, better jokes. I don't get tired of seeing you two work on old engines and getting them going. I would suggest putting two videos back-to-back instead of one in the middle of the other, though. 🙂
I love your videos,Mr Hank and Mr Wiley!!!! Nice job, always!!! I wish to you and your family, Merry Christmas, with healthy and happiness!!! Merry Christmas and to the channel, our favorite, HF!!! Good afternoon from Greece!!! Hi,boys!!!
Suggestion; try putting a quick connect fitting on the machine to fit your porta power and use hyd fluid instead of grease. I doubt that a fitting would cost more than the hose your using. Maybe someday upgrade to an electric pump.
Merry Christmas Hank to you and to Willy and all yours, and Jesus the lord bring the blessings to you on all what you do , best wishes from Lebanon 🙏🤗😀
Yes the timber in the chassis rail would say it be for a u bolt to hold something on there the sepension is maybe a hendresion six rod .was lot those old transtar running in Australia vt 903 Cummins were turboed and natural 903 no turboed
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. First of all. Sending my blessings to you both for a wonderful Christmas and holiday. To each of you and your families. Has been a great year with both of you. Congratulations on getting this one running. You two did a great job. Proud of you both. You take the and be safe. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for everything. The Iowa Farm Boy.
Wow an old International Harvester 4300 Transtar! That V8 Cummins I think is their V903 which was used back in the 70's. Congrats on getting that sucker fired up, it sounded mean! Merry Christmas to y'all!
Merry Christmas to all at Hamiltonville Farm! I respect you so much, I won't even wisecrack you. Stay safe. And as always, all the best to everyone. Chef Scott 👨🍳
We do that sometimes…when the buyer gives us videos of it. But we don’t put them back on the road, we sell 90% of what you see and let the buyer do the rest. 👍
Excellent video Hank :) & Wiley :) also those Cummings Desiel motor are Bullet Proof for sure 👍 👌 😉 and how saying that for sure is The Beachcombers boat The Persephone boat Bruno Gerseil ( Nick Adonis) had Cummings 160 hp motor on that boat and sat around from October 25 1990 to May 25 2002 starting up on 2 cylinders to 3 to 4 in 4 cylinders motor on in 5 minutes running was GM Desiel say and amazing for sure yes ! LOL I always heard Desiel got oil in pan for bearings plus head they starting up no problem and may smoke bit but clear on Cold or Hot starts too perfectly Lol!
@ 10:00 . ...the turbo has left the building .... this 4300 may have been a Frankenstein , who knows ..... It had a turbo switch with no turbo.... did the ejection seat switch fall off when the 4300 hit warp speed ?? haha
Get your SURECAN here➡: amzn.to/3ibihwp
The brakes are called wedge type brakes. The end of the brake chamber rods have a wedge on them that drves between the brakes when applied
Hank and Wiley’s main talent is to give entertaining conversations for hours and still not say anything!! Merry Christmas to both of you guys!!
It sounds like it's a just a little VT 212 Cummins because the 903 wouldn't have as much room under that hood
I think the rapport you two have & your easy-going conversation is every bit as important as your action. & I am very thankful that you keep it family friendly because my 8 year old nephew loves your channel!

I sense some coded innuendo in that remark

The engines were popular in the seventies. They were originally sold as a v903 non turbo and then sold as a turbo vt903

Suggestion; try putting a quick connect fitting on the machine to fit your porta power and use hyd fluid instead of grease. I doubt that a fitting would cost more than the hose your using. Maybe someday upgrade to an electric pump.
Looks like a Blower on the head. Increases pressure. Nicer than turbo for longer life.
Enjoyed this video Hank and Wiley. Merry Christmas to you both and to your families.
Merry Christmas! Hope the weather doesn’t hurt your displays!
Another winner!! 😎👍 Merry Christmas to you and Wiley, Hank!! 🎄🎁 (I like those Nekots too!)

Merry Christmas Gents. God bless
Please show these old trucks once you get them on the road [or, at least, after you get them moving]. A lot of us would like to see them in action.
We do that sometimes…when the buyer gives us videos of it. But we don’t put them back on the road, we sell 90% of what you see and let the buyer do the rest. 👍
Seeing that low horsepower number on the door plate makes me think it is a 555 Cummins. Lowest hp rating I could find on the 903 was 255.
Merry Christmas men and to your family s and a happy new year.
Merry Christmas all!! Stay safe!!
Got it 1 hour after posted, merry Christmas, great video.
