    6 Things you should know about Schooling in Canada (Kindergarten to High School) Today, we talk about schooling for younger kids through high school kids, the schooling system in Canada and adjusting to a new school for your kids. I mention about the different types of schools in Canada (public vs. private) and within the public school system, there is an option for catholic schools, french immersion schooling, and homeschooling. We also talk about resources for special needs children and I have more information on my blog!

    I went to school in Virginia, USA my whole life and an A started at 93% A+ was considered over 100%. There is a fall homecoming week for fall sports and a winter homecoming week for winter sports. The winter homecoming dance would be like your winter formal, then prom is always in spring. You get about 25 minutes for lunch in most public schools

    Quick correction: No, you don’t have to wear uniforms in all Catholic schools. I attended catholic from kindy to OAC (grade 13) and was never required to dress in uniform. It’s dependent on the school and the board

    Hi Andrea, Scarborough or Brampton? I and my husband work in Toronto. So, which would be a better choice from the schooling point of view for my kids (two girls) going to Gr 5 and SK. Should we read too much into the school rankings on Frazer institute? There are very few schools in Green on Frazer in both of these areas and finding a house around them is a challenge. Also, doesn't look like there are catholic board schools in Brampton too. Looking at catholic schools only cos I'm told they are very organized. Please advice.

    What you SHOULD do, is take 3 months to get your Quebec residency before you choose a University (3 months is how long you need to get local provincial residency and things like HealthCare, when you move around Canada.)
    The tuition here is the cheapest in the country, the loans, and bursaries the highest,. If either McGill, Concordia, or Bishop (the three English Universities) doesn't have your program, you want something VERY specialized. And degrees from any of those (but especially the first two) are as good as any. McGill is also known and respected, all over the world.
    Plus spending a few years in Quebec might stop all of that Quebec bashing from happening. It's NOT what the ROC seems to think it is.

Worried about the older two fitting in at such a late stage and is it even allowed? I know in the UK you have to complete the last three years as a unit there. • @AndreavanNiekerk
      @AndreavanNiekerk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In some ways yes but on the whole you will get a good schooling education in South Africa. It’s just so many more opportunities and options are available here

    • @OrangesxLemons
      @OrangesxLemons 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I must disagree. I attended school in South Africa up until grade 9, then finished high school in Canada. Both countries simply have different curriculums/focuses. I personally found that South African school had a more solid foundation for academia, however, Canadian school definitely taught me more life skills. When I transferred over, I jumped a grade and still found myself ahead of my Canadian peers in various subjects such as English, Geography, and History. Science was pretty much equal, and Math was more difficult in Canada. On the flip side, classes like woodworking and volunteering in an animal shelter were highlights of my student years. Being able to drive is also a major plus! In short, my schooling in South Africa gave me structure and a solid foundation, whereas my schooling in Canada taught me independence, and how to express myself properly. Ultimately, I believe both had their merits and I benefitted from them equally.

    • @AndreavanNiekerk

I am very worried that I’m going to get bullied because I have darker skin and for my poor English. Do you think I will face any problems like this? And another question I have for you is that, will they convert my grades into their grading system? Also, will they return me to 10th or 11th grade because I’m 16 years old? Please reply to this😭😭Thank you🙏

    • @AndreavanNiekerk
      @AndreavanNiekerk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Lee! You are awesome! Wowsers I have no idea on those questions about being bullied. What I do know is that Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and if there was any city that can handle immigrants, it’s this one. The schools are pretty tough on this kind of thing too.
      When you get to Ontario you will be able to go to a welcome centre in your area and they will do a quick assessment of your current grades and slot you in according to your grades and not your age. My girls both moved up a grade when we landed here! Hope this helps and thanks for the follow and likes!!! You can follow me on IG too ! See the description for details. 😀😀🇨🇦

    • @AndreavanNiekerk

      Hi - this is not easy to answer since the schools here are so different to SA schools. Catholic schools are free and not always private schools. I would suggest you look it up and see if there are any private Catholic schools. I have not come across any. Private schools here are very expensive you are right but the standard of a government school in Canada ranks in the top 5 in the world! Both streams of schools (Catholic and non) are amazing. I have a South African friend who had a kid in private schooling and also loves it. Some private schools are a lot more affordable than others.

      Life of Nolo Watson hey Nolo, my husband was transferred so we did not need to use an agency. I can recommend Howzit.ca / cool website with loads of info too.

    The education system in Canada is a joke. The level is so much lower compared to most Asian and South Asian countries. I have family friends whose children after having studied for five years of schooling in Ontario tried to go back and study in India. Guess what, they ended up failing in school there forcing them to move back to Canada.
    Also it's discriminatory towards those who are not Catholic. We got a big shock when we tried to get our son admitted to a Catholic school and were told that as we weren't Catholic, he couldn't be admitted.
    In India there's no such discrimination as to which religion you follow when it comes to getting an admission to a Catholic school. What's disgusting is that my taxes actually fund these Catholic schools which would not admit my non Catholic child.

      Your taxes don't support private schools or Catholic schools the tutor fees do..
