Hey everyone, I know I simplified like crazy about the discussion on neutrality. Please share your thoughts on it. Instead of doing a full review like Sean, I decided to just have a chat with you guys.
Thomas & Stereo Hi tomas Why you didn't compare all those amps with the Yamaha A-S801 that is under $1,000 . Also second question I have a ML ESL X what combo or integrated you recommend actually using a Yamaha A-S801 ,Thanks
Hard to compare as there are a lot of products for around £1000 such as Marantz 8006B Rega Elicit, Audiolab, Musical Fidelity, Rotel, Yamaha,Naim, Schitt, Creek and Roksan. The customer is bamboozled with choice and no retailer will allow you test each one to see what works best in your setup
I don't have the AS801 anymore, it was my first 'high-end' integrated amp but that was a few years ago. It has a lot of features and it seems many people like it. I personally prefer the IOTAVX, Sprout 100 and Atoll IN30 over the AS801. I can't really pinpoint why since I can't do an AB test but it's just based on how I feel when I have listened to all of them.
I think some have a trial period. Like Schitt is 15 days I think. This IOTAVX has too but I don't remember how many days. The PS audio I think has a trial period.
@@ThomasAndStereo :) . . . :) . . . when you guys are done high fiveing each other and hugging, please go back to the youtube videos, you do great work.
I recently purchased this IotaVX-stack, and have been listening to it for about a week. It has replaced my Marantz PM-6005 which has been working flawlessly for about 6 years. My speakers are simple B&W 685 S2 bookshelves and the B&W ASW610XP active subwoofer. As a source I only use my Technics SL1500c with Nagaoka MP150 cartridge. I use the built in pre-amplifier in the turntable. The IotaVX SA3 and PA3 are a huge improvement for my system. I do not know much about neutrality, but I'm able to hear details in my record collection that I have never heard before. The amplifiers make you listen to your music all over again. It brings a lot of fun back to the hobby over here! I am not skilled in technical details, but I do can hear great depth and seperation in the music. Much more than with the Marantz. I am thinking of upgrading my speakers to Dynaudio Evoke 30's, not because the current speakers are not sounding good enough, but I believe that this IotaVX Stack deserves better. Thank you for your videos Thomas. Really enjoying your work!
@@maxrider2887 Oh yes. I did upgrade my speakers also because of this amp. IotaVX SA3 and PA3 combo are so much more powerful, clear, detailed, neutral than the Marantz. It's a totally different experience!
Robin Interstellar Label r you serious . My present speakers dali obreon 5. I heard the Marantz pm6006 tuning is much clear .i never heard Iotavx . So fully confused
@@maxrider2887 You can take my word for it. Or you try a set yourself. If you don't like it, you can send it back free of charge within 30 days. If you play digital, I would suggest an external DAC.
Thomas, I gotta say, I wish someone like you were making videos when I began my audiophile journey, it would've spared me great hassle and money. Kudos brother!
I bought this amp for my smallish SF living room 10' x 17", through a pair of Elac Debut Reference speakers and streaming Apple Music does the trick. I really enjoyed your honest review of this product. One note on the company, the first amp I received had a defective display, I sent IOTA a short video of it. They not only exchanged it but paid for shipping both ways. Very happy with this company.
I bought the SA-3 on the strength of Sean's review and I love it! Driving a pair of 89db efficient 8 ohm stand-mount speakers in a small room so didn't feel the need for the PA-3 for extra power, yet. Great value and will be the heart of my system for years to come.
The enjoyment in this hobby is to find out for yourself what you like. A lot of people spent years buying and selling, losing money, reading reviews, and repeat the cycle over and over again. From my experience, everybody has got their own taste. Just like eating food or drinking wines. You eat the same kind of food for too long, you want to change to something else, that’s why we keep changing things. On the other hand, your taste in music can really influence your choice on the kind of equipments you buy. Neutrality may work for some, but others may never be happy with it. Personally, after few decades of playing around, I am back to using the type of equipments that serve my taste. High end gears nowadays are so accurate, transparent and high definition, that playing 70s, 80s, 90s music on few hundred thousand dollars system can be painful to hear. I find listening to vintage vinyl using vintage equipments to be most satisfying. 80s and 90s music also sound great with that generation of equipments. Try playing hip hop, trance, edm on 1950s tube amps and large horns, and they are no good. Same as playing 70s disco or 80s pop music on todays high end system, and you will hear too much compression, little dynamics, lack of bass and highs. I like many kind of music, from classical, pop, jazz, to edm. So my choice in choosing my system is to find one that can play everything decently. To me, a pretty neutral full range system with an optional sub is best. But my best friend, who only listen to classical and 50s and 60s music. He currently got may be 10 pairs of vintage Altecs and JBLs the size of small elephants, and 5-6 rusty tube amps. He never cared about anything other than how musical his system sound. Forget definition and neutrality. He just want room filling soundstage and the feeling of being there. Sound that doesn’t hurt his ears. And this is a guy who had owned 2-300 pieces of high end equipments over 40 years. So I guess there is no right or wrong, no best or worst. It just comes down to taste. And losing money on changing equipments every now and then, is just part of the hobby. It’s the journey that’s what makes it fun. My current system is well over $100k and I am still not ok with it. That’s because, if I am ok with it, I will have to find another hobby. lol
Sorry for the late reply, I actually read this comment a few times but I keep forgetting to reply. First of all, thanks for sharing your experience and what you said is exactly how I feel. Everyone has their own taste and for that reason, I don't beleive there is such a thing as 'best' system but a 'right' system.
Eloquently put. I feel the same. I love all music and I can chnae genres 20 times an hour. I've been trying to find something that can fit detroit techno to Lenard Cohen. I feel like I'm already on the path of losing money...but since I'm on a tight budget...its a slow bleed. A neutral amp..by the name...seems like it's an amp that will let you cover all genres of music. Also seems like not the best match for my klipsch. But we shall see. :)
One of the things that has me looking seriously at this set up is Sean's comments that it will pair well with almost any speaker even as you spend "thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on speakers - it will be a long while before the IOTA is the weak link in your system." THAT is quite a statement!
I pulled the trigger on the SA3/PA3 combo and have never looked back. One of the smartest decisions I have ever made in my pursuit of great sound at prices I can afford. I did the SA3 first, then after deciding on some new speakers (87DB @8ohms, close out special from GR Research) I snagged the PA3. Speaker cables from Blue Jean Cables, and the Audiolab 6000CDT. The SA3 has a great DAC which saves on some money, AND contributes to great audio. I also recommend the Bluetooth Dongle. It opens up music/movies on the internet. Ian, at IOTA is a straight up solid dude who cares about his customers. My units arrived in 3 days from the UK, packaged more adequately than necessary, which shows great care. I have reached the end of my pursuit.
Thanks very much for the discussion I watched it after viewing Sean's review and was really helpful in my process of deciding what to go with when I have limited listening opportunities. Thanks
A few days ago we compared the SA3 against the Mark Levinson 380s pre and the Mark Levinson 23.5 amplifier. The sound signature was very, very close between the IOTAVX and the Mark Levinson's. Thomas has absolutely the right ears that the SA3 got a vintage touch. I can't praise and recommend this amp enough. Top gear for price / value.
i bought the SA3 a couple of months ago and, after a few weeks, the PA3. The combo was fun but I missed the signature of the SA3 alone, so I tried horizontal biamping. The SA3 feeds the tweeters and the PA3 feeds the woofers, now I have double the power and no change in sound signature. Easy.
I’m old school. I’ve been a 2 channel man since the mid 80’s. To me, neutrality means unaltered sounds. Nothing added, nothing taken away. The shortest possible route/circuit from the input to the output stage. That’s why I lean toward analogue amps like the Rega Aethos or it’s big brother the Osiris or even amps like the Kinki Studio EXN1 or EXM1+ I prefer my money to go purely into the resolving capability of the amp and good current reserves. Dacs, phono stages, streaming ability can always be added as and when. I agree that if an amp is too nutral, it can sound thin, cold, clinical, lose some musicality. That is where component matching is so crucial. You are right Thomas. Within a given price bracket, there is no such thing as better, just different. Ultimately it comes down to the experience, product knowledge and neutrality of the dealer and preference of the end user. Keep up the good work and informative videos.
WOW... The comparison with coke and mineral water is top! Also, that one should have a minimum of 1 Time in his AudioFile journey a neutral system! This is a point I did not give that much attention but as you speak it out, it reminds me how useful this is to develop the sensitivity of one's listening skills! It is strange how a man can forget about such things over time...
Folks - if your speakers are rated 8 Ohms - do try connecting the SA3 to the PA3 in 'normal' stereo mode so both pair of speaker cables in to the PA3 and the both little switches on 'stereo' - i found this configuration produced an all-round better sound-stage, with better bass depth and clarity than the 'mono' bridged mode as shown in all these videos and in the manual. If you don't really need the extra watts to your speakers - mine are 88db - then give this normal configuration a go - you may be surprised.
I fundamentally disagree that gear from the 70s was all about neutrality. Most amplifiers and receivers from that era have a smooth/warm/bassy tilt, especially stuff like Marantz and Sansui. In the early 80s it became more neutral in the case of Sansui but still more "warmish". Personally I like that sound, especially the Yamaha and Sansui stuff.
I can't get my head around the idea that your videos get dislikes... I simply don't understand it. Thanks a lot and I really dig the idea of the philosophical talking instead of the reviews if they are not necessary.
Thanks, I do understand some of the dislikes as people leave comments for me. For example, no sound demo in my videos, badly recorded audio and so forth. Yeah, I actually prefer philosophical talk over strickly reviewing a gear. I try avoiding doing both as the video can easily drag on to 30 mins if I did that. I usually aim for 10 to 15 mins now my video.
Thomas, your review and added comments about music neutrality is very much appreciated. Agreed with your assessments about sound coloration. Overloaded bass especially, muddies the waters so to speak. I like it, clean, and sharp not muddy. I got the SA3, testing its use with 3 different soeakers: Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers, Elac Debut Reference speakers, and Elac Debut 6.2s . All play very well with the SA3. I'm comparing the sound against a Denon DRA-800H Receiver. The SA3 seems to deliver a slighly brighter sound , without any adjustments to tonality, and tighter and quicker bass delivery vs. the Denon. I paralleled the Fluances and the Elac Reference speakers, setup in the rear of my finished basement studio setup construed during COVID pandemic in 2020, attached to the B speaker connection on the Denon. Let me tell you, they play extremely well together, But, After awhile, the impedance draw probably overheated the Denon and it shut down under its protection circuitry. I should add that i also had tbe Elac Debuts connected to the A speaker output at tge same time. This configuration produced wonderful rokm filling sound. I tried the same paralleled speakers with tge SA3 , without the A connection , so just tge paralleled soeakers played . The SA3 seemed to handle that load , did not get overly warm to the touch like the Denon did, nor shut down. I may order the PA3 , retire the Denon to another use down the road or just stay with the Denon, play the paralleled speakers separately as A and B speakers at the same rear of the room setup, and connect the SA3 as the Zone 2 amp off the Denons preouts for that purpose and connect tge SA3 to the 3rd pair of speakers in the front of the room. There is no video involved. The basement studio is used for listening and drum playing accompaniment to My Music. Im 69 yo, and retired . Stay well and safe all.
I've seen some people are concerned about the unit automatically powering off after a period of inactivity. I have one of these amps. The "Auto Power Down" is an optional feature, you can turn it off in the menu.
Thomas, appreciate your description of neutrality in sound delivery. I'm just starting to get into audiophilism. During 2020, due to COVID hibernation, working from home (and now at 69 yo, retired due to physical disabilities from spinal issues), I created a basement studio to enjoy My Music for just listening pleasure and playing music to my renewed interest in playing Drums. Purchased a new Denon DRA-800H Receiver, a e new Audio Technica 120XBTUSB TT, Tascam dual cassette deck and a Tascam CD recorder and 2 pairs of bookshelf speakers - 1 pair of Elac Debut 6.2 and 1 pair of Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers. Just received a new pair of Elac Debut Reference speakers to "replace the Flus" as the B speakers. The Denon accomodates A and B speakers separately and simultaneously to fill the finished basement studio with sound. I'm interested in a possible upgrade to the Denon (which was probably a hasty purchase because I don't really use the Video aspects of the Receiver at this time), by this combo from Iota . Can a speaker switch box be added in order to add the second B speakers to this system? Would that affect the power delivery and or sound , if 2 pairs are played simultaneously? Thanks for your informative TH-cam videos. Be safe all.....
I’m pretty much a beginner on a tight budget, bought the SA3 about 6 months ago after doing research. Well I just received my PA3 today, man what a difference. Really enjoying the SA3 & PA3 together, blasted Dark Side of the Mule and now am streaming some Ginger Baker Trio at the moment. I’m seriously thinking of getting another, and down the road a nice Preamp. Maybe some Schiit Freya w a pair of PA3’s as blocks? Oh man I love this setup and the flexibility it can offer.
Thomas I don't think this was "simplified like crazy" or much at all.Just concise. It comes down to trade off's and balance. Then there is your mood.Or even collective mood.An example of this I think is Klipsch.Nobody was talking about them at all but maybe due to being bored with what you had out there and as you mentioned a moving pendulum of taste but all you heard was "Colored","Cuppy" etc.Now it's all superlatives like "alive","fast"etc.I think a realm value of your reviews is you always note what you like among say tweeters (Soft Dome vs Metal). It reminds us all of the major differences and helps the newbie figure out why some products are of a group ion terms of sound. As always great work
Thanks Charles. I tried my best in the short 15 mins and I understand the discussion of neutrality can be very deep. I am glad at least it gives people something to think about and that is the goal of all my videos.
It would be very informative and an interesting part of the experience to share the purchasing process when purchasing new audio equipment. I think a brand is more than the sound, customer service, final cost with shipping etc could be relevant for someone looking into buying new equipment. For those with limited budget this could be very helpful specially when deciding what to buy as there are so many options out there now. Thank you for the video.
Hey Thomas that's why I use 6 different amps to review speakers on my channel from 2 channel stereo receiver/ integrated to Seperate amps if I'm going to be reviewing and rating speakers I need Bright-neutral-warm sounding amps cheap to more expensive), but i strongly agree with you there is no best in price range
Thomas & Stereo lol just started a few months back, channel will get better really appreciate all your hard work and input into audio I've learned quite a bit from you apple's and oranges :)
Thomas & Stereo thanks Thomas just uploaded the Hulk amp! Onkyo Integra M-504 very rich sounding amp (Warm) check it out of you get a chance I used a new age pre-amp
I agree that this is indeed a neutral amplifier. I know it is not very expensive, but you do get a great amplifier for the price. My speakers have a sensitivity of 87 db and are 4 ohms. They are on the bright side, though the bass is pretty good (subjective). I knew I wanted an amp that would be neutral to warm. Since I'm very eclectic in my music tastes I leaned more to neutral. I find the SA3 delivers that. Another way to show neutrality (IMHO) is start raising the volume. With higher volumes do the highs get tinny, do the lows get thumpy? Even at high volumes (98 db on my SPL meter) the sound was very clean to me.
I love vintage gear and that is what I started my quality sound journey with. Harman Kardon and Sansui are my favorite however none of them are neutral sounding in my opinion. Some sound better than others but not neutral at all. Thats everyone's own definition. Class D would be most neutral sounding in my opinion and often not very good sounding unless you get way up in price.
I`m just a begginer in this HI-FI world but I do play electric guitar for like 12-15 years. In our world tube amps are way to go, and most iconic amps are heavily voiced like Fender (bell like highs with rolled down middle and bass) and Marshall with pronounced mids with circuit that produces iconic tube breakup distortion. I suppose benefit of neutrally balanced amp can be ability to play high variety of music from classical to blues, jazz and rock.
You had me at the mention of Sansui. I was looking at a Harman Kardon HK990 but now I need to look into this more. I wonder if they offer a more powerful version
the IOTAVX SA3 + PA3 places the product into the Emotiva, NAD, Rotel and Schiit category. I'm curious how well it competes against these more established brands around the $1,000 USD mark.
As an audiophile I have come to the conclusion that I search for timbre and not neutral sound ("studio" sound) because it is far from timbre, It is easy to make neutral sound but very difficult to produce timbre and life out of the music
Hi Thomas - I just began enjoying the IOTAVX PA3 & SA3 in my home. Looking forward to post break in. How did you manage to get the dimmer trigger to work on your units? When I plug the dimmer cable between the units, it shuts down the PA3. Thanks!
@batero27 It was a long and winding road including reprogramming attempts and returns beginning in January and finally resolved now the end of May. You have to be persistent with Ian and he eventually fixed it, but it wasn't the greatest customer service experience I've ever had. I think Ian was just "bent over" on this issue by his manufacturer in China and he can't figure out a fix. All that said, you can't beat the quality vs value of these units anywhere in the world. The PS Audio Sprout 100 came close, but lacked the muscle and features. It did match the IotaVX at low volumes. The NAD D3045 sounded muddy to me, especially at low volume levels.
I actually have the stack coming in today based off Sean's review. My current amp is too dark sounding for my taste (old NAD) and I tried a Rega Brio which was too lively on my system (and defective I might add), so I decided to aim for something with little coloration. It seems IOTAVX is off to a good start with their gear! [Update] I still own my stack and it still serves me well. Since my last post, I've had Triangle Borea BRO3's and ELAC DBR62'S hooked up to them. I recently have a pair of the new KLH Model 5's running on the stack and they pair wonderfully.
@@ThomasAndStereo hook up both the SA3 and PA3 to my Klipsch RP160's. Can confirm what both you and Sean said, anything past 3 on both treble and bass distorts too much. Otherwise, I think it's a fantastic amplifier for the price.
@@TheHammerofDissidence David,I have the RP 160's also and just ordered the SA3 (going and wait and decide if I need the additional power from the PA3) what sources are you running to the amp and what is your 1 month impression of the IOTAAVX paired with the RP 160's?
@@balooo2863 my main source is a Rega Planar 3 + Nagaoka mp110 + schiit mani, though I'll use the Bluetooth if I just want background noise. I still think the stack is a great pairing. Honestly, I don't find myself really noticing the amps, as they get out of the way and don't draw attention to themselves. Music just sounds (to me) as it should. I have the bass adjusted to +1 and that's all the correction I've had to do.
Great Video Thomas. I started off with the sa3 paired with my Uni-fi Ub5 Slim's and loved it. I just got the pa3 just over a week ago and boy did it ever wake up the Elacs. Thank you for the great content!
The Ub5 slims , I never heard those but people mentioned to me they are bright. I noticed the SA3 works well with bright speakers. Glad the PA3 made a difference for you.
@@ThomasAndStereo They were not bright with the sa3. The treble is definitely tilted up with the pa3 but I still don't get any fatigue. The holographic sound of the Elacs with the neural sound of the IOTAVX makes for a great listening experience.
This is a really nice video, it sounds more like a conversation than like a review. Don't get me wrong, your reviews are good also but this video was different / refreshing.
Natural sounding system is the system that can play jazz very well. If someone make a natural sounding system for hip hop it will sound too bassy for rock and if he does the same for rock it will sound too dark for classical and if he does the same for classical it will sound too bright for jazz. Jazz is the sweet spot if you really want to have a reference of what natural sound is. Of course the tracks and mastering will vary greatly but I am generally speaking here.
Agree, a universal system that sounds natural with all kinds of recordings does not exist. Even within a single genre. For example, let's take something simple like pop music: if you tune your system to sound neutral with 80s pop it will sound boomy on modern pop records.
Thank you! That was an enlightening hands-on addition to Sean's review. My main uncertainty now are the cables. Could you make a similar video about what cables could/should be used to preserve most of the sound quality you can get out of great on a budget speakers and an amp like iotavx?
Yes, I already realized that matching is everything for getting the sound you want. And I also saw your other not-review where you share your 'discovery' of expensive cables. So no war inviting here. Then a different kind of question. What do you think of Yamaha A-S2100 as a 'universal' or base amp (I know, speaking audiophiliac there is no such thing as one-size-fit-all, nonetheless, a word from you would help!) and what floor speakers could you recommend to look at to get a full bodied well detailed sound (treble, mids, bass) with really good imaging. To give you a clue, I'm not keen on Klipsch for being too bright and clear-sounding without enough imaging, on the other hand, Elac sounds to me too neutral and not quite airy. For instance, what do you think of Triangle Borea Bro 8? I listen mainly to classical, jazz, rock, ethnic. Thank you!
Very interested in this amp, i tried to contact the company with 3 emails to find out some specs, i never heard back from them after 3 tries. Im very nervous about purchasing one now. I enjoyed your video very much.
I concur. Just go and look how many positive references that Sean (Zero Fidelity) has from purchasers on the Iota Web site. I'm going to try and borrow one and give it a try for my 2nd system.
Hi Thomas , very good and informative video, I am liking the sa3 and pa3, l like the idea with extra bass with both together , I seen that sa3 has highly recommended by itself but as we both know it is also depends the bass response in the speaker you may have . Regards mark
Just bought it today. It is wonderful! Worth every penny! I am wondering what power amplifier match with it. Thomas do you have suggestions? I was thinking about XYZ edge a300!
I don't have the Freya+, I do have the Freya. I can try it eventually when I have time to test the Vidar because I have that amp now and will share in my vidar video one day.
I has almost made up my mind to purchase the sa3 and sent several emails to then asking a last few questions - no response what so ever. I suspect that, if I purchase it and later need any kind of support, I might no get it.
Hi Thomas! I have watched both your review of this unit as well as Zero Fidelity's, and as a result I find myself leaning toward it as an upgrade. I do have one question, however, that I'm hoping you can help me with. Do you consider the phono stage and dac in this unit to be sufficient, or is it necessary to use separate components for these? Thanks!
Hi Denis, It all depends what you are coming from to be consider an upgrade. The dac is ok but of course, like ALL component in this price range, you can always do better. Is it decent, yeah, it is. Meaning, I have used it's dac for extend periods being ok with it. Keep in mind, you need optical, coaxial or bluetooth to use it's dac. I never tried the phono stage, sorry.
@@ThomasAndStereo Thanks for the reply. Right now I only have a Yamaha RS202 receiver, so I know the integrated amp would be an upgrade. I'm using the dac in a Bluesound node 2 for digital via the rca inputs, so I guess using optical or coaxial would most likely be an improvement also.I have just returned to vinyl because of rediscovering a love for the sound. I'm a senior living on a fixed pension, so it takes time for me to prepare for even small upgrades.Music has always meant so much to me, however, so I'm doing what I can to achieve good enjoyable sound with what I can afford.
Hi Denis. I had the Yamaha AS801 and I personally prefer the sound and musicality of the SA3 more. If you are using a bluesound node 2 via RCA, it means you are using the DAC inside that unit. I would guess that unit is as good if not better than the SA3 dac. Afterall, that streamer is about the price of the whole SA3 unit. Vinyl, there is something about it that digital simply cannot replace. One day I should plug in my turntable with the SA3 to try since I do get a lot of question on it's phono stage. It will have to wait as I am working on the Atoll IN30 review as well as the Sprout 100. In fact you should wait for it if you are not in a rush because I will give you something to think about with the Atoll review. The good part is that it has a return period for the SA3 so its a safe buy.
@@ThomasAndStereo Thank you for taking the time to give me these thoughtful answers. It will take me a couple of months yet before I can upgrade, and I will be interested in what you have coming up. Yes the dac in the Bluesound node 2 does sound good.I use it with an external hard drive plugged into it that has about 200 hi-res digital files. But I love my vinyl more!
Great review! 3D layering front to back, where can I find that in a sub-$2000 integrated amplifier? Can you point me to some units I can investigate that have 3D qualities? Thanks..
Well that is a big price difference. Don't forget you have to add a dac with bluetooth to the Schiit combo. If you are getting a Freya+, you might consider other poweramps with better synergy. I can test it one day but for now, I think it's not a fair comparison.
I'm torn between the wharfedale diamond 240 & 11.3 or diamond 225, wharfedale D330. Currently using a Marantz SR8000 receiver. Looking into possibly getting xtz amp or PS audio Sprout amp. Thoughts?
Excellent video. Even though it is a neutral system, you do have tone controls. So if you're feeling like a little more base is needed for a particular recording you can adjust that correct? And the same with treble Correct? So to say an integrated Amp or Preamp + Power Amp combo is neutral it is still adjustable to your taste correct?
Hi Thomas, I am looking for a preamp to pair with The Elac Vela BS 403s. As you probably know, these speakers are a bit challenging to drive well, at nominally 4 ohms with a sensitivity only 86dB. The Velas are fast and dynamic and i am looking for a complimentary preamp that will pair well with a network streamer. I prefer a fairly neutral sound ... something clean and precise with sufficient power to exploit their full potential. I like the specs of the Hegel h190 (combo integrated plus streamer) however it's a bit outside my budget.
Hi Thomas. Considering that my B&W are bright toned speakers, do you think that the Iotavx would pair well with them or should I go for the more colourful Denon PMA-600NE?
Hello Thomas, did you try out using the SA3 as a preamp only? From what I understand, the bridge mode is pairing two « monobloc » to get 100w, but one criticism I heard was the the PA3 was even better sounding so, by removing amping circuit from the SA3, the result might be a third one!??
There was a post on another reviewers video where a guy uses the sa3 as a preamp and hooked up his speakers to the pa3. He said it sounded even better. I was just wondering if you'd keep both in stereo mode to do it.
I noticed the speaker binding posts are covered with some kind of plugs keeping me from using banana plugs or the like... Is that so, or am I misinterpreting something?
I have a question regarding the combination of the two units which allows for 100 watts/channel. In that config, one speaker is driven by the SA3 and the other speaker by the PA3
a topic of interest as of late for me, looks like there’s a measurement camp that if the snr is not high they won’t touch a particular piece, i would love too hear your thoughts on the subject.
Thank you Thomas for another great “review/chat” if I were to get two power amps from iota and bridge them, will I get the neutrality If pair them with the Schiit Freya +?
I am thinking about buying it, but, watching this with my gf, her comment was something along the lines that "it's unfortunate that the looks do not match the vintage sound"... and I unfortunately have to agree :-/
Great job & you know more about speakers thin i do but i just wanted to know if the Monitor Audio Gold 50 GX50 bookshelf speaker would work as a home threader or its just for music?
If it has a center, then it should work fine for movies too BUT, if you are planning to use it for HT, you absolutely need a sub. I had the GX300 and even with that, I needed a sub for HT.
Thomas & Stereo ok thanks I’m trying to get it under $500 my friend is sort on rent this month so he needs some money 🤣 lol . Keep up the great job!😎👍🏻
I like neutral amplifiers. I like the idea of letting the speakers do what they were designed to do. Maybe I just like the romantic simplicity of it. I do have the the sa3 and pa3 paired with klipsh rp600m. I enjoy it but want a significant speaker upgrade. Focal Aria 906 is top of my short list. I have a pair of REL t5i's...and I believe the focal would shine with them. Do you feel the iotavx stack would give the Focal the respect they deserve? I'm currently bi amping them so I can have the RELs connected high level (cant do it when the amps are bridged in mono)... But I'm ok using the sub out with the Focal.
Reliability. Durability. Will it last. Will it burn up. Will it malfunction. No one really knows until it's been in one's system for at least 1 year and more. Each listener has his/hers own preferences, i.e., 3D stage/imaging. Open sound while others like boom boom. Lastly. Does the manufacturer stand behind its product or not.
Hey Thomas, how to connect speakers to the sa3 and pa3 combo? If I use bridge mono the signal comes from from sa3 and pa3. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of splitting the pre amp from power amp? Also why connect an interlink with both left and right channel to the power amp if you run bridged there is only one channel coming from power amp? I am a little confused can you help me get things clear. And doesn’t it sound different left and right channel because of the interlinks connected to power amp? Thanks in advance! Kind regards EJ
IOTAVX SA3 with Focal Chora 806? Currently I have the Yamaha A-S801 (100w per 8 ohms) but I would like something different, I tried a tube amp but at 89 db sensitivity, I would need a new pair of speakers.
The SA3 is cheaper than the AS801 first. Would it sound different, sure but I personally would not go that direction. What tube amp have you tried so far with the 806?
@@ThomasAndStereo any amp suggestions ? Decware? Boyuurange A10 or A50? Budget max 1500 CAD, I know it's not a lot, but would like something that sounds different than my Yamaha A-S801. I am into vocals and jazz, so the big bass doesn't really matter.
Great reviews Thomas, thoroughly enjoyable. Im considering getting the Iota vx sa3 at the end of November.Im also looking at the Audiolab 6000a ..Have you had a chance to hear the 6000a? Is it worth paying more for it?
Charles Omeni did you have get any advance in your definition?? Im at the same point!! please share your path. i'll apreciate any comment you have!!!! thanks a lot in advance !!!🙃
@@roquesoprano913 Hi mate, no I haven't received a reply yet, at the moment I'm leaning towards the Iota SA3. I'll let you know once I have decided. Difficult decision :-)
Thanks, sadly I never tried the 6000a at my home so I would not know. However, with the IOTAVX, you do have a return period and I personally would recommend getting the PA3 also. If you are in Montreal, you can check out the 6000a at centre hifi.
Thanks for the reply Thomas I really appreciate the feedback. It's great that you interact with your subs on the channel. I've heard the Audiolab 6000a and I really liked it. Great advice regarding the SA3. I'll avail of the trial period. I have Klipsch RP 600m and my listening room is small so I dont think I'll be needing the extra horsepower, it might sound too boomy. Thanks again good Sir
Thanks Thomas for your interesting channel 🙂 These are made not far from where I live and I wondered about them working with my Monitor Audio Silver8 as they are bright and bass heavy though good for movies
My focals are bright and they work well with the SA3. Infact, I would say these work fine with any bright speaker. For the bass and your setup, you might need the PA3 too. Without the PA3, I wonder if it would be a bit bass shy if you like the type who like bass.
Do you think the amp is good for monitor audio rs6?
I like the unique direction you took this video in. Well done, Thomas!

You're the most neutral reviewer out there.
Lol
I agree with that..some reviewer tend not to mentioned the negative side of what amp they reviewed.. Keep up the good work Thomas..stay safe.
Thanks for dropping by to let me know.
Is it better then award 🥇 wining Marantz pm6006?
@@maxrider2887 Oh yes. I did upgrade my speakers also because of this amp. IotaVX SA3 and PA3 combo are so much more powerful, clear, detailed, neutral than the Marantz. It's a totally different experience!
Robin Interstellar Label r you serious . My present speakers dali obreon 5. I heard the Marantz pm6006 tuning is much clear .i never heard Iotavx . So fully confused

Thomas,
I gotta say, I wish someone like you were making videos when I began my audiophile journey, it would've spared me great hassle and money. Kudos brother!
Thanks, I was blessed with having many knowledgable audiophile friends so that helped me a lot.
Thanks for sharing your experience :)
How are you feeling about this setup now? I ask because it’s identical to what I plan on doing!
Love it but I have changed the speakers I am using to Triangle BR03.
@@jacobfields5623
Phil Parker what were the reasons you decided to switch?
I bought the SA-3 on the strength of Sean's review and I love it! Driving a pair of 89db efficient 8 ohm stand-mount speakers in a small room so didn't feel the need for the PA-3 for extra power, yet. Great value and will be the heart of my system for years to come.
Congrats Stan and glad you are enjoying them.
He is Mr Thomas, Not Reviewer . He clears the expensive and over grown smoke over the HI-FI gadgets .
Thank You sincerly.
Very insightful 👍
Eloquently put. I feel the same. I love all music and I can chnae genres 20 times an hour. I've been trying to find something that can fit detroit techno to Lenard Cohen. I feel like I'm already on the path of losing money...but since I'm on a tight budget...its a slow bleed. A neutral amp..by the name...seems like it's an amp that will let you cover all genres of music. Also seems like not the best match for my klipsch. But we shall see. :)
Really useful video - especially for those of us who have seen Sean's two reviews of the IOTA gear. Thank you, Thomas!
One of the things that has me looking seriously at this set up is Sean's comments that it will pair well with almost any speaker even as you spend "thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on speakers - it will be a long while before the IOTA is the weak link in your system." THAT is quite a statement!
Yes, I purposely tested it with the Focal 936v for that reason and it's fine. Sure, not like my Pathos Logos but that one is like 5x + it's price.
I have reached the end of my pursuit.
i am waiting for my sa3/pa3 to come in the mail with bluetooth for 700 i cant wait
@@420peteycrack good job! Blue Jeans Cable Co! Great stuff, no hype. Trust me!
Your approach is great to listen to. You are a gentleman. I won’t listen to sound demos of generic music so I’m with you on that.
Got mine yesterday, have problems opening the battery compartment of the remote, can't wait to try it out, thanks for your thoughs Thomas.
Like your balanced and sincere approach to hi fi Thomas, please keep safe despite the weather.
Great day when a Thomas upload hits ... Top quality info!
In addition to their great sound the Sansuis are beautiful.
These amps paired with the Buchardt S400's would sound amazing I bet.
Thomas you are the best, this is from a 68 year old audiophile, vintage means colored, today it's sterile
Thanks for the explanation of neutrality

Excellent video. Thanks for reminding me/us of the concept of 'neutral sounding.' :-))))
I really appreciate your take and attention to detail. I have decided to buy this, partly based on your review. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Same here.
Maybe it’s not a review but you took it to another level.Wow good job
the IOTAVX SA3 + PA3 places the product into the Emotiva, NAD, Rotel and Schiit category. I'm curious how well it competes against these more established brands around the $1,000 USD mark.
It can compete and it just comes down to voicing. Depends which one is for you.
As an audiophile I have come to the conclusion that I search for timbre and not neutral sound ("studio" sound) because it is far from timbre,
It is easy to make neutral sound but very difficult to produce timbre and life out of the music
Gave you a shout out on my last video review I dropped yesterday thanks For all your hard work Thomas I appreciate it
Hi Thomas - I just began enjoying the IOTAVX PA3 & SA3 in my home. Looking forward to post break in. How did you manage to get the dimmer trigger to work on your units? When I plug the dimmer cable between the units, it shuts down the PA3. Thanks!
oh, it just work without any issues. Are you sure you did not plug in the 'trigger' port instead of the dimmer port.
Ah, please let me know how it sounds in your system. There is tone control on it but max I can use is +3 to -3, beyond that, too much distortion.

Good review. You could be a good teacher. Using examples are the best way
This is a really nice video, it sounds more like a conversation than like a review. Don't get me wrong, your reviews are good also but this video was different / refreshing.
Glad you liked it!
I see, something for me to think about and test. Thanks.
Problem with cables is that it is a question of matching. Also it invites war in the comment section.
Always a pleasure to wotch your reviews how does it compare to the naim nait 5si
Hi Thomas , very good and informative video, I am liking the sa3 and pa3, l like the idea with extra bass with both together , I seen that sa3 has highly recommended by itself but as we both know it is also depends the bass response in the speaker you may have . Regards mark

I am wondering what power amplifier match with it.
Thomas do you have suggestions?
I was thinking about XYZ edge a300!
Hello Thomas,
Your reviews are fantastic, thanks.
Can you please pair IOTAVX PA3 and Schitt Freya +?
See you.
That is unfortunate. I wonder if they are on vacation right now.
Thanks!
Hi Denis,
It all depends what you are coming from to be consider an upgrade.
I just got it (sa3) and I'm happy.
Great review! 3D layering front to back, where can I find that in a sub-$2000 integrated amplifier? Can you point me to some units I can investigate that have 3D qualities? Thanks..
Hello Thomas, means neutrality the same as tonally balanced?
Ah, great way to put it.
Hello Thomas,
IOTAVX SA3 OR IOTAVX PA3 + SCHIIT Freya+ (the one with 4 tubes) ? Please.
Thank you very much.
Well that is a big price difference. Don't forget you have to add a dac with bluetooth to the Schiit combo. If you are getting a Freya+, you might consider other poweramps with better synergy. I can test it one day but for now, I think it's not a fair comparison.
@@ThomasAndStereo I really value your opinion and that of Sean (Zero Fidelity). :)
Nice aproach.
Is this combination a good choice to drive the magnepan LRS or the .7s?
You PA3 came with the input voltage set to 230 (12:21) and you put the cover for the switch back on upside-down after changing it (10:08).
Ah, thanks.
Thanks for defining neutrality!.
I'm torn between the wharfedale diamond 240 & 11.3 or diamond 225, wharfedale D330. Currently using a Marantz SR8000 receiver. Looking into possibly getting xtz amp or PS audio Sprout amp. Thoughts?
Sorry, I only had the D225 before, really smooth sounding speaker and bass that goes deep. I would expect it work well with the Sprout 100
Just had my beloved Sansui BA-2000 repaired and recapped. Cost me about the same as the integrated amp you just didn't review.
Yeah, if you had to buy that Sansui, it will be way more expensive than that SA3.
It was kind of a review:) thanks Thomas.
thanks for the variety!
How would these work with my elac UniFi uf51
Thomas, keep up the good work!!
Thank you - may I ask if you can elaborate what you mean by smoothness??
I noticed the speaker binding posts are covered with some kind of plugs keeping me from using banana plugs or the like... Is that so, or am I misinterpreting something?
I think by law they have to ship with the plugs, red and black right? You can remove them.
@@ThomasAndStereo Ok. (was going mad, haha) Thanks a lot.
I think what you did is sharpen and define the context of this gear's usage as well as give examples.
I have a question regarding the combination of the two units which allows for 100 watts/channel. In that config, one speaker is driven by the SA3 and the other speaker by the PA3
Yes
The moment you mentioned Sansui...I swiped my card..lols!
Have you listen to IOTAVX AVX17. How does it perform with movies and 2 channel music.
a topic of interest as of late for me, looks like there’s a measurement camp that if the snr is not high they won’t touch a particular piece, i would love too hear your thoughts on the subject.
Sadly I never paid attention to the specification so I would not know. I just plug it in and listen :)
Thank you Thomas for another great “review/chat” if I were to get two power amps from iota and bridge them, will I get the neutrality If pair them with the Schiit Freya +?
No and you will not get 100wpc. You are best to get one good power amp to go with it.
Thomas & Stereo thank you. Any suggestions around $1-2000? I was thinking Schiit Vidar or Rotel
Thomas & Stereo or the Schiit Rag 2
Hi Thomas great reviews..
May I know what is the input impedance of sa3 on line input?
Sorry no idea. Check with them, maybe they will answer.
I love your video's but one question what cd player would you recommend with the IOTAVX SA3
Technically you only need one cable. Look Zero F made a video to showyou how to do it. just jump to 6:46. th-cam.com/video/TlL5ybNDrEQ/w-d-xo.html
will the Triangle BOREA BR03 be good with IOTAVX SA3 and PA3?
It is fine.
@@ThomasAndStereo Thanks Thomas much appreciated. I tried with the Prima Luna Evo 100.
Have you tried using the sa3 solely as preamp and pa3 as amp combo? From my experience, it sounded so much better.
Oh interesting!
Can you pls recommend which speakers are well suite for this amp?
Hey quick question, how do you think this pair would sound with maggies? Particularly the LRS model?
Thanks Thomas for your interesting channel 🙂
These are made not far from where I live and I wondered about them working with my Monitor Audio Silver8 as they are bright and bass heavy though good for movies
My focals are bright and they work well with the SA3. Infact, I would say these work fine with any bright speaker. For the bass and your setup, you might need the PA3 too. Without the PA3, I wonder if it would be a bit bass shy if you like the type who like bass.
