  • A pitfall to avoid in digital painting is sampling too much color from a photo. This caricature critique of Michael Keaton examines why it’s important to study color and examines some structural issues with the drawing. More at proko.com/caricature
    This student critique builds upon the previous lesson on using checklists to caricature a subject. For this lesson, the critique is broken up into two parts. The first goes over the dangers of sampling colors from photos to replicate a subject. The second goes over the abstraction process and fixing some of the structural errors of a caricature using a checklist. This is only a small part of critiques for the caricature course. Lost the likeness because of the lips looking too thick and, the nose is the wrong shape (the nostril specifically is too visible and large) and the eyes are too... not squinty enough, as well as the relationship between the eyebrows and the eyes. The revision has eyebrows that are too arched. The cheekbone maybe too should protrude more. Lots of little stuff but those are what makes the likeness happen. I would not have looked at it and seen Keaton.

    I love watching professionals work, I feel like I am picking up great tips on expressions and the structure of faces even though I don't do caricature. Thanks for these awesome videos.

    You're obviously very good at what you do, but in this case I actually preferred the student's work. The likeness is closer.

    Loses the likeness because his nose is very smooth, a clear line from eyebrows down. You can see him breaking the rhythm line. Also his facial features are small on his face, with barely there cheekbones. His pout is not sticking his lips forward, it's sucking his lips together. Overall, the final drawing added too much generous structure to a very strained/tight face.

    Like many others, I was also surprised to see that the likeness got lost almost completely in the correction. The students work was spot on with all the small asymms and little unevenesses imho, as well with some of the bigger forms. It wouldnt be a problem and would be understandable, if the corrector would admit at some point that it was jus a structural correction and that he had lost the likeness on the way. But instead its continously stated throughout the vid that he extends upon the original and corrects it as a whole, even saying "caricaturing it a little bit more". Thats where the credibility gets lost, I guess. I think no one would be making a big deal out of it in the comments if that would have happened. It then would be great to see how even professionals are not working like machines and are not able to create the results they want all the time. : ) It would be enjoyable. But how it is now it jus appears a bit boastful.

    I've noticed you almost always tend to overdo the lip fullness and the part underneath the cupids bow (point on the upper lip)

    I would've liked to see the submitted caricature without the color, only the drawing underneath. I think it looks more alike the subject in the photo than the one at the end. Great video!

      It's not a simple subject that you can cover in a short video, and you'll notice no one else did theirs in color because that's not what this section is about. But yeah, some color theory and painting in the future would be nice.

      yeah I understand that its too short video for such big topic, but I really struggle with colors and just cant understand how to use them. It says Learn Color in the name of the video so I kinda hoped there will be speed up paint over or smth :D I know that use dropper on photo to take colors is wrong, but I dont know how to make beautiful looking palette of my own. The colors I think would look nice look terrible in the end. I hope I'll find a way to understand how to color lines, bc nobody seems to care about line pictures or black and white paintings.

      Stan's done a color basics video before. It's not a whole course but it might help you out: th-cam.com/video/TfAZt3O0sLY/w-d-xo.html He's said before that it's better to master value before color, so if you haven't gotten there yet it might be good to focus on that.

      Akemi Hatiko excuse me if I am not addressing your concerns but one way to approach color that I have found effective is to start with a limited palette. For example, you will want one of each of the three primary colors.
      Say that you pick a warm red like Cadmium Red, a warm yellow...perhaps Cadmium yellow medium, and a warm blue like Ultramarine or a blue that tilts toward green. Or you could do the same thing using three cool primaries.
      Plus white. Check out the Zorn palette, too. When you limit your palette this way, the colors in your painting will
      be harmonious when you mix them.

    I actually do like the professor's take better. I think the original work (which was already great by the way, Im not contesting that) was too hesitant in exaggerating the features, which the final version made up for.

    Wow, so many condescending comments here. Many claim that the students drawing was better because it had more likeness, but I honestly think the teacher did it way better. The students drawing was obviously not well proportioned and it made it look really weird. He just corrected his structure and it actually looked better. Also let's not forget this is supposed to be a caricature which means that, sure it still needs to resemble the person while exaggerating other features, but that's no excuse for bad structure.
    And it's also not fair to compare just a sketch with an all out painting. I bet that if he painted it, people could see the likeness better.

    Could you or Stan do a FULL VIDEO JUST ABOUT THE REILLY METHOD? Like step-by-step? I've seen a few of yours where you use it, but no one from the Watts ecosystem has actually gone through it explicitly and explained it. Is this a premium-section thing? No video that I've looked up has been adequate, and no book has either. It's like every one that uses it just knows it from some class that I can't find!

    • @seanramsey
      @seanramsey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Court did a pretty in-depth video about Reilly's head curves in the premium section for Caricature Part 1. It's part of the list of videos on the Abstraction.

      Awesome, i'll have to go premium and check it out!(and this is not just the demo with Putin, right? That had a lot of it, but I couldn't really reproduce my own rhythms from watching it...)

    • @seanramsey
      @seanramsey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there's a video specifically on why we use each abstraction line and where it belongs on the face. There's also an ebook that goes over drawing an abstraction step by step and a bunch of additional demos.

    • @KimCyunHi
      @KimCyunHi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would have to be a REALLY long video. ;) There are some books available by students of Reilly, like Mastering the Craft of Painting, by Angelo John Grado. You can get it second hand cheap, I think.

    You ever finish recording a video and realize and think to yourself, "Yeah, I was full of bullshit, theirs is better..." and not upload it? Because I think you should have for this one. Also, misleading title, much to others sentiments, wish you would have gone into more detail on color theory or at least given reference. I'll admit to getting a bit heated towards something I'm not entirely invested in (caricature) but I do think teachings like this is what made me lose faith in myself as an artist. It's ok, I can hope to find myself again as there are millions of others out there who may have a better viewpoint. All about diversification. So you may not think your course is the be all, end all of caricature, but this video certainly gave off that vibe.

    • @CourtJones
      @CourtJones 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is from a caricature "drawing" course. Not a "painting" course. I only thought to mention the color sampling thing as an aside because it's a big problem in the digital painting world. But I think I explained why it's a bad habit and what the practice leads to. The title of "why you should learn color and structure" is pretty accurate. Also, since I do 10 or 12 of these student critiques in one sitting (the rest are in the premium course), there was unfortunately not time to delve deeply into color theory here. It's much too large a subject to tackle. I'm sorry you didn't get as much color discussion as you had hoped. But I think you missed the meat of the lesson, which was about fixing the underlying structure of the student's caricature. Not only the forms, but the expression becomes exaggerated. So, in the end the structure was better aligned and the expression read more clearly, even if you are not able to see it. Some people have problems reading caricatures because they're applying portrait rules to it. Some may agree that the likeness was not improved. But this was done in a live setting, like a classroom, with no second takes. That's part of why these live recorded student critiques are an engaging and valuable part of the teaching process. It's good for students to see the struggles of the teacher occasionally because it lets them know it happens to everyone. And they shouldn't stress if they also don't always hit a home run. If I wanted to take the time to develop the likeness on this student's sketch and take it further, that's when I would do another tracing. If you follow along with my lessons, I teach the benefits of drawing and refining caricatures over multiple stages, making improvements with each pass. Good caricatures don't just magically happen with most people. It's a skill that needs to be learned. And I'm not sure what "vibe" your picking up on. I hope this course simply helps the students who follow along to improve their caricature skills. No more, and no less.

    Tries to fix structural issues, barely does so...introduces new ones. Great! Especially how the mouth now clearly exists on a different plane than the rest of the face. I get it though, trying to fix issues of a drawing while painting over it can be rather difficult to not be influenced by what's underneath. So it's usually better to just avoid that and start blank.
