In this student critique, Court breaks down his general method and thought process for refining a portrait sketch using the abstraction. It’s important that you use the abstraction to refine and improve your sketch instead of just tracing it. This step should improve the caricature and help you move on to the final sketch.

I've seen this abstraction a few times but this is the first time I've really understood it's value. To apply perspective to organic forms is no easy task. Enter the abstraction! I know now I need to spend some time with this until it is second nature. Thanks for being the only one on the internet to do justice to this! Mr. Riley would be proud.

This guy is bad ass. He's absolutely excellent at what he does.
Something that I like is that he is able to show variation between his works. Sometimes I see popular artists whose work all looks identical. I can appreciate Court's skill.

The student art seemed to get really confused by the abstraction as it relates to facial planes vs. facial fat. The far side of the face, away from the camera, seemed very tricky for them. I can relate. It's super hard for me too. It's hard to visualize how the structure of the face works that is hidden from view. But it's worth spending time working on because it's incredibly important.

I've subscribed to Proko and his drawing tips have helped me with my drawings.
I'm now using a fire stick and these caricature videos have given me more ideas for making better drawings. Personally I favor the realism, but Court's suggestion on an earlier video to spend 15 to 30 seconds and drawing from "imagination" is something I'm going to work on more.

You do realise, that there are many people following along as you speak.... Then they caricature you in a variety of ways, after all you are right in front of them. No? Just me? :P Love your video:)
I used to draw my teacher in art and so forth. I tend to draw what's in front of me a lot, if out of habit if nothing else.
I hope so! I love seeing caricatures of myself. They're pretty rare, because most of my colleagues always tell me I'm particularly difficult to caricature.

That's good to know. I thought I was talking crazy pills because I get home exhausted at 11pm from work and watch TH-cam to relax, and I thought I was losing my mind.

The abstraction confuses me somehow... Too much lines and I'd stick with a lose hand work ... I do know they portray the outlines of the muscles and skull form, but they're overlapping this much and it would only be easy on digital.... Especially when you want to erase the abstraction lines to overlay your actual work... An erasor on paper can't fix this and a lightbox ain't so cheap to get
Actually, I recommend that if using real paper and pencil that artists draw the Abstraction on tracing paper. No lightbox needed. And when you want to trace the final drawing over the Abstraction, again use something thin, but high quality, like a translucent vellum. Doing it on separate papers will keep the drawing cleaner, and you can judge your progress more easily. I hope that suggestion helps!

I think this artist is just connecting one point to another and not feeling the rhythm of the lines. I kinda wish you would have pointed that out in the students drawing.
