  • prrt1steamloco... - Please help fund the T-1 Trust! They are a wonderful organization, building an advanced new 4-4-4-4 T-1 steam locomotive from scratch!
One of the most viewed Port Of Tillamook Bay videos on youtube! For several days I searched the old POTB line between Banks and Buxton, OR for this vintage EMD SD9. I finally got a tip that it was in Timber. I drove down the windy forest roads to the tiny community, and sure enough it was there, and had been sitting for many years unused. Since July 2012, this locomotive has long since been scrapped.
If anyone's wondering the location this engine was once at, the town is called Timber, OR. It's a tiny community out in the coast range and can be found on google or yahoo maps.
The smoke in the beginning was only someone using the fireplace in a nearby house, not the engine being started.
If you enjoy my videos, feel free to like, comment, and share! Thanks for watching!

This was a railroad that served hundreds of businesses before it was washed out in 2007 and would have cost tens of millions to fix. The company did not have that kind of money and SD9's aren't worth anything, so they just left everything. POTB planned on fixing it in due time, but fisheries regulations and the recession killed their efforts, and they filed for bankruptcy. The real heartbreaker is when the railroad died, so did the hundreds of businesses it served. You will find loads of abandoned equipment, trucks, buildings, sawmills, etc.

@Dominic’s Trains & Movies 2004 Check out Greta Thunberg. It's not a hoax. Climate change emergency already called by UK Gov. Check out the facts. Artic is disappearing, seal levels are rising. Polluting locos will be cut and melted down as scrap.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast

@Dominic’s Trains & Movies 2004 I don't like cars and trucks either. They need to be replaced with electric and hydrogen power equivalents.
It's not just one iceberg that's melting, it's all of them. Sea levels are rising a few mm every year. Average temperatures are also rising. Just quoting a couple if examples is no argument, you need to look at long term averages.
You may be rail fan foamer, that's fair enough, but don't be a climate change denyer. You are only going to have to revise your view in 10 years time.
You may as well start now and help prevent it.

Scrap steel is worth no more than about 20 bucks a ton now. With a locomotive that weighs 180 tons that would only yield 3600 in scrap. You are saying someone is actually paying MORE than 150 dollars per ton??? Hell that doesn't include the labor, machines, and the trucks to haul it all out.

Adderall vs This railroad suffered a major washout in the Salmonberry canyon between this location and the Oregon Coast years ago. The damage was far too expensive for the railroad to repair. Since 2007, these tracks have been out of service and most of the equipment scrapped. Fortunately, some of the equipment left on the coast still survives:

I was really wondering the same thing. Gotta be a lot of money sitting there.

    • @lawnmowermanTX
      @lawnmowermanTX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@richardcasey7521 Technically, natural disasters did cost millions in basic road repair, and rebuild money. The amount of man power, equipment use and updated railroad code tracks, ties, spikes, track repair would run about $4.9 million (low) to approx $55.9 million. It's really up to Oregon State government on exemption paperwork, legal costs, procurement, then hauling/towing the locomotives to a service shed, to rebuild the engines, tanks, air breaks, couplers, air hoses, wheels, bearings, car maintenance costs. There would be a massive industrial need, to restore the original railroad line. Not to mention, upgraded safety costs, training a railroad crew to inspect every inch of railroad line, design new road bed, trestles, bridge spans, anti-flood-/-flood control zones to protect the track line, get the original vintage diesel engines operational, and safe to use, on a ball-park figure, I would guesstimate approximately $75 million to $250 million in today's money.. Not to mention, if the State of Oregon has strict laws on enviornment codes, fish, wildlife, codes, and other codes that the railroad has to comply to operate. Plus, hiring 24/7/365 security team-force to keep vandals, and undesirables off the tracks, local, county, state law enforcement cooperation.. Most of the equipment currently abandoned is probably not worth much in scrap iron.. unless wealthy rich, billionaire-trillionaires would amass enough capital to procure the entire line, under historical jurisdiction, going by the original years it began/operated. If you're not Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Rockerfeller, Rothschild rich, worst case scenario, most of the equipment will be sold for scrap iron, and never seen again, assuming that has already happened. Only Big Bucks (money) and or State-Federal, private trillionaire money talks. :'( Sad.. Even Texas has hundred of thousands of miles of abandoned, ancient railroad miles since dismantled back in 1930's to the 1960's.. When Steam and Diesel locomotives were replaced with modern diesels and the route/lines were abanonded to be sold for scrap iron.. I better photo snap this comment that's unoffensive in case my 1st amendment rights are violated by Google TH-cam Censorship guidelines. :)

Railroads are privately owned corporations. They do not have to sell them or trade them in. This loco was probably depreciated off the books years ago. It may be left there forever...up to the railroad. They car repair it or scrap it or leave it there. If you live in the US you can certainly "abandon" equipment like this. Happens all the time though usually they end up just cut up for scrap.

Value is not always easily determined. Sometimes the "property" is still on the books and can't be scrapped without an impact on the books. Sometimes you think the property is owned by one person...but it's not. I've worked with shortlines where they take over the line and find there are cars on the property owned by out of business car leasing companies. Scrapping them becomes problematic. Knowing who owns what and what the plans are can be elusive to those not in the know.

The line at banks was still served by POTB until 2009 when they shut down for good. 6164 was used to switch the banks mill. when they shut down, they drove it as far as the tracks were in okay condition, so timber because after timber, washouts and other nasty stuff starts.

The "all it would've really needed" you discussed might come out to be tens of thousands of dollars. At some point it is just not worth putting the money into these old units.

Teneishia Coleman : Let's not mention about the debris that lays on the tracks. Last thing you want is to derail and get injured. Well, that's if you care about your well-being or not. I'm sure you do though.
