Hello and Welcome. Today we are watching the first run to Dillionvale in 20 years. With the fraking boom in the Ohio Valley. The Rails are playing a major part to move the fraking sand, gravel, and other materials. Although this is the 2nd train to make it up the line in the week (the first being when it took up the loaded hoppers) Still one of the first trains to make the run into almost 20 years. Of course the line was giving a little T.L.C. before operations started. The line was completely retied a few years before being abandoned. hints why it only took some trimming to get trains running again. This was a weekly run. Good to see this industrial activity bringing life back to something forgotten. It's good for America.
Too bad it's fracking.
I indeed feel that joy to see a historic piece up and running again. In some cases, railroads don't stay abandoned forever, and they sometimes have locomotives travel up and down the line. It is like one of those steam exhibitions that occur once in a while.

Sometimes old tracks can be scary to look at, what with how warped and curvy they can get lol these ones though didnt look too bad :D

I am from Ohio and I am glad that you filmed this very historic train. I always like to see the first trains and unfortunatly, the last ones. The railroad near me just closed in April and I got the last trains on it. There are scores of lines that are just barely holding on and its nice to see one come back.

God this takes me back...I grew up on a dairy farm in upstate NY. We had a railroad running through the farm and right through the front yard of the house and of course I was delighted being 5 years old. It was the old West Shore RR part of the NY Central and I remember the NY Central F7 locos and the bright turquoise cabooses that use to throw candy out the window to me and my sisters as it passed. Seemed quite busy at the time as I remember trains going through all times of the day and night. Just a single track. Then one late summer evening in 1961 a diesel loco pulling a very old steam engine stopped at the house when the family was eating supper outside on the terrace. Seems that this was going to be the very last train going through. The steam engine was on its way to the Smithsonian Institute. We got a grand tour of the modern and the historic engines then the train left and a few days later a bunch of machinery came through and tore up all the track. That was a sad day in my life. I do have a couple of poor pictures of that last train though to reminisce.

It's a beautiful thing, to see tracks left alone and not turned into a damn trail. There needs to be a Trails to rails movement in this country, taking back the trails and turning them into commuter services.

Thats exactly it. I bought a diesel truck because the SUV didn't make enough smoke or screw the environment enough. I burn tires for earth day and cook and eat the neighbors pets... America is great :D

This is very nice. It's always great to see a dormant line re-activated. Sadly, all too often the tracks have been removed dashing any hopes of seeing trains again. Trains like this will keep the rails shiny! :)

Always nice to see the trains back up and running on an old, previously abandoned line. Kinda sad it had to be for fracking, though, but oh well.
Fracing is quite safe if people understand how it is done and what is done with any waste water.

I was an Engr on the N&W also on the NS during the 60s and 70s Took many coal trains out of this area so glad to see that this rail is active again
nothing beats restoring old track to run train. Finally the rail road has a customer. the rail ties might need to be replaced though. thank you for the video.

Not likely in the next 20 years, but ... 45 years ago, no city had light rail transit.. now many do. It might happen in the long run because rail is still the least costly and safest way to transport... if the need continues to emerge, we might see resurgence in inter-urban rail.
This is a message to all the major railroad lines bring back the steam locomotives
You don't have to run them everyday run them at least twice a week. The rest of the week run the big diesels

A freight train, while carrying the freight of 100 trucks, only emits the pollution of four trucks. Each time I'm sitting at a railroad crossing, waiting for a train to go by, I say that each car on this freight train is one less truck on our highways.

I have a photograph of my grandad and his crew in 1910 in Bergholz, Ohio
He hold coal out of southeast Ohio to Alliance. The track ran on the eastside of the
farm when I stayed with my other grandparents. Just south of Paris, Ohio and the Pennsylvania was on the south side of the farm.
My grandad worked out of the Minerva roundhouse.
The rail road needs to start using the old abandoned tracks again and put big companies on them.

This very thing happened in cal.The railroad shut down the rail line.Did not pull up the tracks.Over the years housing was built along the line.Then containers fon china grew so much.The rail road was reopened.People fought it all the way.But was told that is the right of way to do with as they see fit.Which goes to show when buying a house.Go see where it is or where its to be built.Do not put to much trust in a realtor.After all they are out to get that commission.

@@floridianrailauto9032- Transportation is natural monopoly. Streets, roads and highways are the most obvious transportation monopolies. Having multiple railroads on the same route is impractical. A long time ago four four-track railroads ran between New York and Chicago. Each RR had two high speed passenger train tracks in the middle, one track for each direction, and two outer tracks for freight trains, again one track for each direction.
Improvements in train management and signaling reduced the need for multiple tracks. As the more successful RR companies bought out the less successful, the excess tracks were removed.
Now a single main track with passing sidings carries many times the traffic of the old multiple track lines.
Regardless of what the consist is used for, you guys know it and feel it..............the awesomeness of motive power giving life to an old branch that's been sleep for many years. The sights, smell, and sound of the power of these superbrutes rollin through; you can't get enough of it. Young children probably get their first chance to hear a real locomotive horn. Always a good thing to give some badly needed jobs to good people too. Well done video, love the sound. It's a thing of beauty.
Hot rail!! My grandfather worked for the B&O railroad from 16 until he retired. He's passed on now an so has other old timers that worked with him. Seneca's on the rail. R.I.P Laverne.

Fracking is a God Send to Ohio!
I live in Hummelstown Pennsylvania and as old as it is the Hummelstown and Middletown Railroad is still hanging on. One of the sections of the main line still crosses over Route 322 near Hershey and it then crosses over Main Street in Hummelstown and goes up to where it joins the Norfolk Southern main tracks that are currently very active. These used to be the Reading lines from yesteryear. Thank you and great video!!

Great Video. Growing up in Weirton, WV in the 80s I spent some time chasing trains on that line when It was still NS. I hated it when they quit running to Dillonville. I am glad to see they have reopened the line.
CSX took over Chessie system they abandoned alot of Railroads in WV but most of them are now walking trails
Old Industries and Rail-Road Tracks will come back to life now. New President with Old ideas that ain't never left.

Great video! The sound is superb! It's like I'm standing trackside. What a great story about an old branchline getting new life! That doesn't happen in New York. If rail sits around for 2 years unused, the trail people are screaming for a new recreation trail that will bring millions of people to the area in no time!!!!!

From Google earth, it looks like the tracks are completely out of service west of Dillonvale to the grade crossing at Unionvale-Kenwood Rd. There's some sort of facility there that may be a concrete plant, there look to be a gravel unloading operation there. A ramp for a track hoe to enter the open gons from the end has been built right over the main line, and all of the grade crossings from there down to Dillonvale appear to have gravel or asphalt over the rails. A photo of the Blairmont Trestle clearly shows that rail is missing at that spot.
The tunnel not far from Warrenton has collapsed & there is a washout also. There has been talks about getting it all back up the but guys in maintenance of way said it would be a great deal of work. We do on the other hand use the Pittsburgh Jct. end regularly to service the sand trans loading facility at the old Nelms mine at mpx 186. Keep the videos coming Cody.

i remember when i was a kid, i wont mention any times, but the engineer down in tiltonsville let me drive the 2662. it was soooooo epic.

events like this bring a smile to my face...then I think about how up here in Canada, our 4 mainlines maze of tracks has been reduced to two main lines with a small short line serving only a small handful of customers...why rails arent banked and saved up here is beyond me.
The one in St. Thomas, Ontario (CN Paynes subdivision) hasn't been used in years and weeds grow through the tracks.
Nice footage. I live in Chester and drive a water tanker in the oil fields, so I pass Mingo and Rayland on a regular basis. I keep saying that the Marcellus and Utica drilling is the biggest thing for our area since the steel mills went out over 30 years ago!

20 years wow the track by me has been abandoned for about the same and theres trees growing over and through they must have kept it sprayed to look that good still but love seeing lines used again keep it up America

I lived in a town that was a rail hub in the 1900’s. Now there’s no tracks at all. Just a bridge, some gravel, and the tree rows. The last train ran in around 2000 the year I was born.
The Wheeling & Lake Erie railroad was involved in the production of the movie Unstoppable back in 2010. They loaned out a few of their locomotives to make the movie. AWVR 1206 was played by 2 different locomotives, W&LE 6353 and 6534, which were SD40-2's. AWVR 7375 and 7346 were played by W&LE 6352 and 6351.

beautiful video thanks for sharing. I'm from St.Marys,Ontario,Canada & follow CN & CP Freight trains come through. I also film the CN snow plows which is an awesome sight to see. I also got to ride in the plow & engine once when we got about 4-5ft. of snow that night & we couldn't see out of the plow window lol, it was very intense.

+mathue taxion Ex-SOO. Those came off of trade-in FAs and RS3. SOO was a little light on cash, so the just reused the Alco trucks.
Given the high short hood and the Type B trucks, i was thinking ex-Southern, but just an educated guess.

I live in Newark Ohio and I'm looking for old abandoned rail lines that have not been converted into bike paths, yet.
I like to walk the railroads as long as there are rails :)
...and who knows? Before you know, after serving as a freight line, it may serve future Amtrak or commuter rail service.
Only IF there is a demand for the type of service Amtrak or commuter rail service provides.
agreed. alot of these rail lines can be revived if population density increases and rail travel popularity rises
given track speed of commuter service - it would need to be upgraded - so highly unlikely. the heritage line where I volunteer is in the same boat - a large transit organization owns the 10 miles of track we run on, and we lease the use of it - but we are responsible for maintenance. If they were to ever run commuter trains on our line - they would need to pretty much replace and straighten the majority of the line.
DrSurprise That would be a nice thing. Where I grew up there was a line. Up until the 60's it was a mixed use and parts were double track. In the 90's there was talk of using it for passenger service again. But that died because they said the line couldn't handle the speed's of a normal commuter train. I don't see why railroads don't try to run at least two passenger cars on some line's.
I think commuter rail lines require being near major cities.

Nice video, I like that you narrated thru out the video. People that are not familiar with that state or area would never know that this line was there. I am from the Mountains in NC and we have several old lines, the most famous is the old Saluda 5 ++ grade up the mountain. Keep them coming, thanks!
After 20 years, I'm still surprised that the rails haven't given way and shattered, or the sleepers (cross-ties) haven't splintered. The only explanation I can think of is there must have been a great deal of pre-maintenance on the track beforehand. Nice to see trains are starting to make a comeback on low profit routes again.
the line i film is the pevine line owned by Norfolk Southern. It has been abandoned since 2003. they do small transports on some of it like this but most of it hasnt had any action since 2003

I see these orange and black wheeling and lake Erie locos in Huron OH a few times a year. Sadly the sheetrock plant shut down last summer...not sure if they'll be back

On the old trains from 1850 to around 1920 the toilets empytied right on to the track. That is why they wouldn't let you use the restroom when the train was at the depot.
when abandoned small company railroads open its always a good day in America the industrial revolution is that started it all its what gave America its power in economy by moving goods believe it or not small railroads are a very important factor in our economy!

What's happening is the quick buck artists are in there fracking because Ohio elected a douchebag investment banker as their governor, Kasich, who sold the state to the Texas oil interests. They'll be done soon, and all the drinking water in the area will be poisoned, as well as earthquakes coming to visit. That's what you get when you vote in Republicans....ruination.

I am of the opinion that traveling, and shipping, by rail might be coming back. I bet that some of the old train stations might be in use again within a few years.
