Great tutorial! I found it was really easy to buy a cheap pair of baby socks from the dollar store, stuff one inside the other (like you're double-bagging them), and fill that with the corn starch. Then rubber band shut. I've had really good success with this hack!
I get a real chuckle listening to you saying how cold it is. Here in southern California I have been complaining all winter about the heat! Also you get static electricity because of moisture while we get it every time the dry Santa Ana winds, start, as they are today. I love all your videos. Thanks for all those little tips and references to other websites and you tubers. Intend to fix my ATG tomorrow so I can stop saying bad words to it.:)
Using pretty scrap fabric and pretty ribbon or lace you can embellish and whip up some gorgeous gifts fast (so thrifty) for your crafty friends and family. Great kid project too. Great video, thanks for sharing!!!
I made mine from a clean sock. Since the dryer always eats one or two of them I thought that would be a great use for the lonely sock. I inevitably forget to use it on the first stamped image! Lol TFS! Great video!
Something else to try: 1 - newborn socks from the dollar store. They can be very cute and make the sweetest embossing baggies. 2 - instead of using black EP, pretty much the worst EP in the whole Universe, (LOL!) you can stamp with black pigment ink and use clear EP on top. The impression looks much sharper too. if you use Versafine Onyx Black, it looks super sharp and crisp when embossed with clear EP.
Awesome. I don't see, but have a friend who does, and she said she will make me one. I gave her a copy of the pattern you had on your blog. Thank you very much for showing us so many ways we can save money so we can spend more money on other things like paint. You have awesome examples. Thanks so much for sharing the things you come up with.
Thank You! I've put off buying an embossing pouch because it seemed like there must be a cheap way to make one, but I don't really sew, so this is wonderful and so simple! Awesome card too :)
I'm new to stamping and really love embossing better than all of the other techniques. I made my own anti static pad with cornstarch, but it wasn't doing the trick so, honestly - two hours ago, I broke down and paid the $5 for a 'real' one (with a coupon, of course). We'll see if it makes a difference. The real trick, either way, is remembering to use it! I even put a reminder label on the lid of my VersaMark pad, and I still forget to use it half the time.
vidbox44 , the "real"good ones are made with Fuller's Earth or Bentonite Clay. You can get either at health food stores and some pharmacies - 1 lb for about 7 bucks and that will last you 2 lifetimes :)
vidbox44 Seeing you are new to stamping, I learned very quickly that embossing was best when I used clear until I developed a flow and also, the best way to make sure that all the extra powder is off, is to use a good quality makeup brush. The other trick was a quality heat gun. Lindsay has mentioned the kind she uses a million times and I can't recall it so hopefully she'll see this and let us both know. I haven't embossed in awhile and am slowly (too slowly) getting my supplies out of storage. The pouches do work, don't give up on making your own. Muslin and cotton work the best!
Thankfully I watched your newest card today. I have been trying to figure out what I am doing wrong since I just started stamping and using embossing powder... Good grief if I only would have known!!! Thank you!!!
thanks for the tip, I use to have a craft room in the basement well I still do really just half my stuff now, but moved upstairs with my other half, and did have problems with moisture so thank you for the tip
Awwww haha I seriously bought an embossing pouch yesterday cause I couldn't find a tutorial on how to make one hahaha >_< you are the best!! I will do this in the future!!!
I saw your previous video on making one of these embossing pouches & made one back in February. Then my girlfriend gave me the powder tool from ek success & mine works just as well. I had to compare them since I'm a Frugal Crafter devotee. Thanks for the instructions.
good idea on the embossing pouch, Lindsay! Thanks! I just take a USED dryer sheet and run it across the paper. Does same thing, but I'm not sure it's always as effective as the corn starch.
I hated the thought of spending so much on one of those. I just kept putting it off because I was thinking, "I can buy a new stamp or stencil, etc for that price". Thank you so much for sharing!
I use the anti-static pouncer all the time and it works great. I bought one though before I learned what was actually in it ...but it was on sale so that's okay.
Hey Lindsay!! I have been waiting for you to show how to make these, glad you did it! So lately you have mentioned different uses for glycerin.. did I hear you say in this video that we could use glycerin in place of watermark ink (versamark)? I another video you mentioned you could make your own (Dove) blending pen by mixing water and glycerin (since none of the stores near me carry one I want to make one if possible, what would the mixture ratio be (water to glycerin)? Any other uses for glycerin? Thank you so much for All of the DIY info you provide us with it really helps those of us on a strict budget. Love your work with water colors!!!
Sure wish I would have waited to buy my pouch. :-{ Great card and I love the bike! I have one just like that it is a Firestone. Can't wait to got to the stamp show. Thank you
Brilliant ! I've been using a makeup blush or powder foundation brush and dipping it in baby powder and giving my paper a light dusting. Works good but sometimes it grabs too much powder and the paper has too much dust on it. :P
Hi Lindsay, I am just new to stamping and I have some stamps and a couple of different embossing powders, my question relates to the heat tool. I don't have one of those but I have a hair dryer and a heat gun, I used to use when sign writing. I am wondering if either of these will work? Thanks for the great video and tip about glycerin.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Lindsay, I know you have said which one you use a MILLION times, but can you mention what brand it is again please? Seems the ink pads and those tools are still in storage and I am sure after too long in storage, it may be time for a new one. Thank you in advance! Love your videos! ~M~
sadiejosiemom I did a brief comparison on the Windsor and Newton Marker review of liftability. th-cam.com/video/Bdkvdv4QG50/w-d-xo.html I find the SAs so much easier to blend than the TH markers.
Amy R..why I say paper tray ink....Lord knows. I think I have one set of the markers left to go. I think any type of watercolor medium is my favorite. I must have ..well too much.
I made my own embossing pouch today using scrap fabric and cornstarch..unfortunately, I still have tons of stray powder on my paper. What am I doing wrong?!
Ok Lindsay, I have yet another question. I do have an embossing pouch (not homemade) but if I am embossing on dark paper the powder(from the pouch) tends to stay on the page after I have stamped and embossed. Any suggestions? Marci
Thanks Lindsay.I will try the dryer sheet. Should it be a used one or a fresh one? BTW thanks for answering so quickly and so early in the morning. I didn't even finish my coffee and you answered.:)
Another great tutorial. Thank you! I just bought my husband a drum set rubber stamp and I can imagine a great way to use it like this!! xojennyinseattle
Thanks for the tip Lindsay! I have a question for you about the embossing heat tool that you use, that silver one. I have that same kind, and I'm already on my 3rd one within a month. The first time I got it, it worked for about 4 embossed images and then just stopped working. Well I thought that maybe I just got a bad one, so I exchanged it. Then the second one did the same thing, after about 3 embossed images. Now I just got the 3rd one and only used it once so it still works, but I'm afraid that it might go out on me like the other 2 did. So I was just wondering how long have you had your heat tool and where did you purchase it? Im thinking that maybe its because I ordered mine from amazon and maybe they have the bad ones or something. I dont know. Its just getting really irritating because every time it goes out, I'm in the middle of a project, so then I have to wait on the replacement to be shipped. I guess if my current one stops working too, I'm just going to try a different kind because it's getting really ridiculous. Do you have any suggestions for another heat gun? Thanks for your time and any input you might be able to give me.
Maria Wicks Mine came from Scrapbook.com I think, I've had this one for about 5 years and before that I had a green marvy for about 6 years before it burned out.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Wow 5 years? I must have definitely got a bad batch or something. After the first one went out, I tried to be extra careful not to overheat the second one, so I wouldnt let it run for no more than about 30 seconds at a time, and it still went out very quickly. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this 3rd one, if not then I might just have to switch to another kind. Linda Gilliam I heard that the Ranger heat tool doesn't heat up as good as the others. Most of the reviews I've read about it, the people either love it, or hate it. The noise factor isn't really an issue for me with the others ones. But if my current one goes out on me too, then I might just try the Ranger one out. Either that or the pink Zap one, which I've read some pretty good reviews on it.
That is a loaded questions so hang on because I have some thoughts on this topic. There are many reasons you might want to emboss some practical and some purely aesthetic. Practical reasons- embossing makes the stamped image raised, usually has a shiny finish and permanent. I often use black fine embossing powder (EP) over a sentiment stamp to make the words really pop off the page. They are raised, shiny, and darker black than a stamp ink only can ever been be on paper. You can also stamp with black ink and use clear EP to get a similar look though it probably won't be as dark as the black EP. in 2015 there are so many EPs available that you might chose to use one because it is a color that you can't get in an ink.
Everything Art It's not rather, it's also... lol Some techniques work much better with heat embossing: 1. nothing is more white than white embossing powder on dark cardstock. 2. to watercolor images, embossing creates "wells" so you can do a wet on wet and the ink doesn't "travel" where you don't want it to. 3. when you emboss an image with clear EP on top of printed cardstock, you can use it as a resist. so if you then sponge on top of that image you get a cool "glow" effect you can't get with anything else. etc etc :)
Everything Art there are so many reasons:) I recommend if you are just starting try a clear ink and clear powder. Another cool think to try is white powder because it shows up on dark paper where white ink might be dull or smudge. There are also affordable sets bu Stampendous at Joanns that have 12 colors for about $10, small containers are fine because it only takes a little. You can use clear powder over colored ink too, you just might need to stamp over your image with clear ink if the colored ink dries fast;)

Loving the long videos lately!

Thank you so much. I almost tried the baby powder but was not sure. You help us who not sure of ourselves. Thanks again xxx

Lol Lindsay, I have the same problem.
Great tutorial. Love that bike stamp and the card turned out so nice. tfs. Bettina

Great tip on a money saving technique for the pouch....tfs
Wow, this morning I was so mad because that happened to me with specks all over. Thank you so much for telling me how to get rid of that..
I hated the thought of spending so much on one of those. I just kept putting it off because I was thinking, "I can buy a new stamp or stencil, etc for that price". Thank you so much for sharing!
The shims fixed mine, too. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. I'm fairly new to card making and appreciate any tips and hints I can get!!
Thanks for all your great videos, I look forward to them! I used recycled packaging plastic for my ATG shim so I can see my roll of tape.
JensCreationStation good idea!
I use the anti-static pouncer all the time and it works great. I bought one though before I learned what was actually in it ...but it was on sale so that's okay.
Great tip and card!
This is a great tip. Can you use baby powder for this technique also?
xx Vanessa :)
Vanessa Bourque yes, or corn starch!
Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for a lovely instruction film about embossing! Can you send me some feedback on where I might find the stamp of the bike?

Vivian Rovsek yes, that is right, 50/50 mix water and glycern for the blender pen refill.
Your the best!🐰

Jade Wallace the heat gun will, use the low setting if it has one and try using it further away from the paper so you don't scotch it.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Lindsay, I know you have said which one you use a MILLION times, but can you mention what brand it is again please? Mari Nyx I have a Marvy heatgun:)
Can you do a comparison review of the spectrum aqua markers vs. Tim Holtz distress markers? I don't have any of the spectrum - yet!

I saw a pinterest post that uses old pantyhose.
mamamonster I think it would let out too much powder.
good point. I may try one but do a double or triple layer. I may also knuckle down and get the bottle with brush powder applicator.
