Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but han is an emotion of something along the lines of grief and/or sadness. So, the Han River that bears too much han means that the river bears too much grief and sadness to the older Seoul that the river watched change into the modern Seoul of cars, streets, etc. I think you could interpret it different ways.
One of the meaning of “Han” is sadness/grief but for han river Han stands for big/king

4:18 - So, about "han" ...it's a play on words of sorts, because the most famous river in Seoul is called Han and Han in general is a very culture-specific concept for Korean people associated with grief and resentment (as a Neverland yourself, you probably know that (G)-Idle also have a song of that name, it is relating to the same thing - a sad emotion, basically).

My perception of this song is that it has a double meaning, that it is both about the love/hate relationship you have with the place you live, but also the love/hate relationship that you have with yourself.

Yeah but Ilsan is practically Seoul. Even though specifically it’s Ilsan, it’s still like an extension of Seoul. People interchange easily between, transit wise (on the Seoul subway line). Often people live in Ilsan and work in Seoul. If you were explaining where you were from to an outsider who knows nothing else, saying you grew up around Seoul isn’t wrong.
I’m sure as a youth he was in the main city on a regular basis to shop, play, eat, see relatives, etc., so it definitely wasn’t unfamiliar to him when he moved into it.

Yay! I'm glad you liked the song and the video! I think most of your questions have already been answered on the comments (about Han and about what RM says). Just to add: Cheonggyecheon is a stream in downtown Seoul, with recreation space (like for strolls), and Seonyudo is an ecological water park.
As somebody pointed out here, RM's hometown is actually Ilsan, a satellite city to Seoul. I think what I mentioned in my request is that the song reminds me a lot of my own hometown and my feelings towards it.
What I really like about this video is, by the end, when the mirrored city landscape starts to resemble sound waves/waveforms, and when the music ends, the landscape also fades down. That was soooo well made! Anyways, thanks for the reaction! Really loved it! ☂️💜

I read in the comments of the Seoul MV that Namjoon says "I'm at the Han river. Yeah, I'm leaving now", or something of the sort. Also that the river is a place where a lot of peope sadly decide to end their life. That gives the phonecall a lot of meaning if you think about it like that. I'm not saying that Namjoon wanted to portray exactly that feeling, but I believe that he was trying to show how he visited the place because he was feeling sad, but in the end decided to leave.

Ben, you really really need to react to the whole „mono“ playlist! A whole masterpiece that needs to be listened to in the given order because the songs are connected. I cried so hard hearing it for the first time. Even though I had no idea of the lyrics first. After looking up the lyrics I just the same as you did: Joon just knows us so well! It’s like he can read our thoughts and put them into beautiful lyrics. This whole playlist just feels so personal. It’s Namjoon sharing his feelings and telling us that it’s okay to feel the way we do, especially with regard to sadness etc. I‘m listening to „mono“ every single day because it’s after all so soothing and comforting. For „moonchild“ and „forever rain“ there are MVs as well.

This song makes me a little emotional... Both for the emotions in it, but also just because damn, I do wanna get back to Seoul. It was such a cool experience being there for a little over a week... My father once explained to me that "Han" is hard to explain because there is no equal word in English to compare it to. I've come to realize that it's something that all fellow Koreans share: a deep sorrow or sadness found in the depths of one's soul that is ultimately reflected in their music, art, etc.

Han means the collective emotion of Koreans which are impossible to translate even. It's like the emotion about some situations the people cannot handle and should keep all the emotions inside because of all the suppression of the society or cultural norms. The Korean ethnic song, "Arirang", is said it represent the emotion of "HAN". Actually, old generation may have this feeling but I think not anymore among young generation because we don't keep the emotion inside like the old generations.
And people suicide a lot in Han River. That's the reason RM sings "HAN RIVER has HAN" as the sound is same..
Han river(한강) is the name of the river in Seoul South Korea.
