I LOVE the narrator in Kaiji, and although I was disappointed he didn’t make a return for the Tonegawa spin-off, I can appreciate his own style and level of intensity.
Yeah both narrators seem to be very much in the right spirit, the Tonegawa one perhaps even more-so, since it took a while for the Kaiji narrator to get that hype (it was largely late s1-s2) and this new one was sounding just like he was narrating professional wrestling haha
So great to see Fukumoto getting more coverage! I've had friends avoid his work because of his style, but for me the style is a huge part of what makes his work so great. I loved how you described the narrator as a "hype man." That's the perfect description for him, and I can't believe I never thought of that. One of the few narrators I've become emotionally "attached" to over the years and I really hope he returns for the Tonegawa anime.
I don't think they announced a staff, but it's at least Madhouse, and they had the same narrator from s1 (2007) to s2 (2011), I'm sure they can get him back :)
Artwise, the Kaiji anime especially season 2 are extremely impressive. While other anime have very flat faces, Kaijis face is basically a 3D model with all the geometric edges and planes that make up the face. Its very impressive when the camera pans around a side view to a front view and it still all makes sense
I was so impressed by that too! The animators did a *really* great job. Good design made it possible to do all the action scenes and extreme camera angles. That adds extra drama to the show and it is so beautiful to watch.
Has anyone ever noticed that Fukimotos characters have double the amount of teeth in there jaw/lower half then in upper half? That is also part of his aesthetic.
YESS! A FKMT video! So glad to see one about my favorite author. Although Tonegawa's manga is not really made by FKMT (despite him being labeled as the author), it does share the same aesthetic.
Beautiful editing and great analysis of a brilliant artist such as Fukumoto. Although skeptical at first, I've been enjoying the hell out of this series about Tonegawa, didn't think the man was so good at writing comedies too.
ayyyyy I was worried cause it doesn't exactly represent the video stylistically, but I couldn't resist, I had the title chosen for SO LONG AND I JUST HAD TO!! XD
I've been wanting a Kaiji video from me too LOL I was so worried I wouldn't be able to make this for a while, like until after April or something, but I totally forgot I had spring break this week and just pumped it out start to finish! ^_^
I was rewatching some of your videos. I wish you uploaded more often since you are hands down one of the best manga-anime analysis channels out there. The editing in this video is superb and seeing your perfect grasp on what makes Fukumoto's story & art presentation style so intriguing is an incredibly satisfying experience and it makes me very happy.
Thank you very much! I currently have my hands full with something irl but I'm working on content for when I come back. It might not be as visually intensive as these videos cause they just take so long and I want to have more content on my channel, but they're sure to be pretty good so I hope you look forward to them ^_^
This perfectly encapsulates my feelings for Fukumoto’s artstyle, I couldn’t have said this better myself. Great video man, and I’m glad I could find people who also appreciate Fukumoto’s spectacular way of visual storytelling
That sound effect always has me dying laughing.. I love that about the show, the little nuances & hi jinx they tend to over exaggerate- just makes the show even more incredible.
God that means so much to me, thank you! I really wanted to make a video doing Fukumoto justice, and while I wasn't able to convey the full scope of his work, like I couldn't even scratch the surface of how good Kurosawa and Kaiji are (One Poker especially) (also I'm a bad Fukumoto fan I still haven't read Akagi or Ten or Gin to Kin or Zero, but I plan to sometime, I have the Akagi anime cued up) I am happy I was able to articulate exactly why I love this man's style.
I dunno if you're reading the Kaiji manga, but I'm pretty sure One Poker is ending pretty soon at least in Japan (translation is like 5 or 6 volumes behind). I think they've been holding off because EVERYTHING post s2 has happened over the course of one night, so I'm holding out that the end of Tonegawa ushers in Kaiji s3 and it's like 50 eps or more. That's my ideal scenario at least.
this is a top tier anime and manga channel. i had seen the berserk video already but didn't actively seek out the user. fukumoto hits close to home and this video was so good it inspired me to go watch the rest of your stuff and seeing you were the berserk guy was a pleasant surprise.
Glad to hear I was able to convince you to stick around! ^_^ I will admit Berserk represents a paradigm shift in my content, everything before it (except my Moomin video that doesn't use spoken dialogue) was very conventional in visuals. I had so much fun making the Berserk vid the way I did I never wanted to go back to full screen anime footage.
What the fuck man, this is so well edited and so well done. You earned a subscriber. Fukumoto is one of my favourites mangakas of all time, and only discovered him the past year! (I'm about to finish the Akagi manga right now, sweet lord those draws) It's just so unique and I love every detail put on the characters thoughts and emotions. Definitely looking forward for more people to experience it.

I'm planning to make a video on the Kaiji manga and coming back here to see how you edited this video really made me appreciate how much work got put into it. It's really quite amazing.
Of all of Fukumoto's manga that got an anime adaptation, I wish Zero got an anime. I just read the scans on Kissmanga. Could you give me a link to those scans? I just finished Part 2 of Zero and need a Fukumoto manga not about mahjong
As a big fan I just have to add. Fukumoto does this to reflect the emotions of his characters. Despite being about very slow games of cards, dice, plinko and mahjong they often have lives at stake. If you were betting your life like this, time would slow to a crawl and you'd react tenfold to things most people do subconsciously The aesthetic also makes up for the very dark undertones and lack of cute anime girls. I mean Kaiji's in crippling debt for the initial 13 volumes, and by nr 14 it's only gotten worse

I also haven't seen Akagi but I believe it also has a narrator, but I'm not sure if it's the same one. If it isn't you could make the argument they want a different narrator for every series (since this is a spin off of Kaiji and not ACTUALLY Kaiji).
oh, I was joking, I can't imagine anyone going on for 20 minutes about it. I think that episode 1 had the most out of place sounds, like, it was harder to get what words he was focusing on while Kaiji's was very evident. Akagi's feels tamer than both, pretty generic, but I haven't watched any crazy scenes yet.

So far it's not really any different from the manga, it's largely a gag series and the anime largely kept the aesthetics of the Kaiji anime, including the larger than life narrator (which yeah I can't help but have bias towards the old one, but this one has had plenty of his own shining moments). Personally it's been too long since I've heard the original Tonegawa's voice, so I don't really mind/notice the change in his voice, I think this current one fits great :)

I watched Kaiji purely because of the aesthetic and then got hooked pretty much immediately. I guess in a way it is "ugly" but that's in such a complicated way that I had to see more. Bring on Tonegawa! Kaiji S3 when!?
I wanna say soon since they've probably held off on animating it until the arc is over. Everything post anime has taken place over the course of ONE NIGHT, so I'm assuming they've been waiting for that to be complete before animating it, though at this point it's so long (ABOUT 300 chapters?) it's sort of unlikely. Lowkey hoping the Tonegawa anime is meant to usher it in, though the reason it's being made is purely because it's actually quite popular in Japan.
Tonegawa runs gallantly He is just living in the present It is the gift of effort, not genius Unreasonable demands come today as well It's expectedly difficult But still, I do it, Because it's my role Being scared of human relationships Is nothing new But to be honest, being scared of it You have to embody the trick to living through it A life rich with ups and downs I had to keep my sleeves rolled up Or people would pass me by You don't notice when you're running Don't bring everything from yesterday Just live today Tonegawa runs gallantly He is just living in the present It is the gift of effort, not genius I was fulfilled by not being fulfilled Doing whatever I wanted Please just do it Do it today
Great stuff dude! Always interesting when we discuss it and then I see the finished thing. Question though, do you believe the anime suffers from being in color? I love the contrast that he has in the manga between his negative and positive spaces and I believe some of that raw tension of black vs white space is somewhat lost with color.
I can certainly believe that take, and in a lot of the shots in the anime color does make everything seem more normalized. I do think it makes up for that in those many shots of the exaggerated backgrounds with these swaths of color and bathing the characters in different light. And there's also good use of atmospheric lighting that gives some scenes more gravitas which the manga can't exactly implement, ala the lighting effects I added in these shots from 2:53 and 2:58 and this shot at 7:11.
Did you know Kaiji has a new live action adaptation from China? It's called Animal World, maybe check it out and do a video if you like it! It's on Netflix.
I have seen it! I enjoyed the take! And was impressed they could adapt the first arc so effectively into one movie, on top of adding some interesting stuff!
I love the new avatar and banner, i wonder who was the extremly talented artist who made them

Good thing I read this comment before being tricked into watching a furry's video.
The original Kurosawa deserves an anime. It's too perfect.

You have to embody the trick to living through it
A life rich with ups and downs
I had to keep my sleeves rolled up
Or people would pass me by
You don't notice when you're running
Don't bring everything from yesterday
Just live today
Tonegawa runs gallantly
He is just living in the present
It is the gift of effort, not genius
I was fulfilled by not being fulfilled
Doing whatever I wanted
Please just do it
Do it today

Cool, I can respect that. There are definitely pros and cons to both.
Complicated and tuned down. Got it.
