Easiest way to lay a soldier course is to hang a top line for level and plumb and a bottom line 1inch up off the angle iron and that keeps the bottom plumb ,no in and out on the bottom. You never need to use a level on a soldier course. When you pick up a brick you find the squares end that is the top of the soldier course. If the top of the brick is laid to the top of the line and forms a 90degree angle it is plumb! To much tapping and checking just move the brick all over the place. Try it you don't waste time with this method. I also layout my spacing so the last brick fits perfect, no guessing as you go.
