- 15,000 CAR DEALERSHIPS SHUT DOWN Due To Cyber Attacks
My name is Brandon and I am a used car dealer. I created Car Questions Answered to share the ins and outs of the used car market from my perspective. I share with you updates on car prices, what's happening at the dealer auctions, and what it's like being a dealer. My goal is to share information to help you make the best decisions while buying a car to save you money. I do not want car dealers taking advantage of you.
Thanks for watching and please feel free to leave any comments you may have in the section below!

The dealership I'm working with right now was offline yesterday. I thought it was a tactic. Turns out this was a legit cyberattack on their backend software.
Wow thanks for sharing... What's it like today?

@@CQALive Respectfully , just hold off on the vids a few days, Youre gonna need the time to sort things out.
Listen my dood, been following you a while. I work in the Industry responsible for *fixing* problems like this. Some of my colleagues are literally going to be the ones fixing this. (if it can be) or telling everyone how to close down their business if they cant. I could write a few pages on whats likely to happen, but ill keep it short.
once you get past 72hrs.....the statistics for *any business* surviving this kind of outage/attack/failure is below 10%.
For comparison, Ace Hardware got their inventory and loyalty system hacked earlier this year. They survived because they were mostly distributed ownership coops with backup paper processes and alternate systems that could supplement business ops.
CDK....and dealerships. That the whole fucking business my dood. Sorry. (and if you want , wait a bit, but Ill happily explain why you dont base your entire operations on a single piece of software like this)
We worked on our CDK system until yesterday (Thursday) around early afternoon. I work at an ag dealership. I emailed my Kubota contact to let them know. Kubota said today they have about 300 dealers affected that they know of. We are 1 dealer and have 10 Kubota stores. We get to pick our own system. We couldn't use the system at all. I wasn't able to perform my job all 7 hrs I worked. Though my bosses didn't offer for us to stay home or work from home (work in corporate, not customer facing).
Hackers need to lower the prices.
Fo real
Somebody does.
😂
🤣😂😅
Maybe that's what they were doing.
Additional add-ons…
Window tint - $995.00
Leather protection - $1,225.00
Cyber Attack protection package - $4,995.00
No.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Coming soon. Might seem like a joke but it's coming soon
One of the major payroll processing companies was having issues as well.
Turns out having the whole country’s infrastructure hooked up to the internet was a bad idea.
Who would have thought that??? 😊
It’s not an issue if you have a cyber team but usually companies will budget for critical requirements after a disaster happens 😂
Looks like a CIA or CCP attack
Hackers need to run a 70% off sale
What was the old saying? Never put all your eggs into one basket. Funny how we can no longer do the simplest things without a computer linked to a global network.
Watch out for the $2999 cyberattack fees!
Hahaha
$80,000 pickups 😂
I've had 29 different vehicles. Any time that I have bought a car from a dealership, it always comes down to the same 90's printer that O'Reillys still uses. Why? Am I signing a speeding ticket from the 90s? "Press hard, three copies."
Cyber attacks are no joke, but franchise dealers are getting hit....meh.... Feel what all of us feel when we enter your business!
Wasn’t just dealers that got attacked, a few retail stores couldn’t do returns as well yesterday.
Ran into it at my Local Lincoln Dealer for a scheduled Service. have to reschedule as they were basically out of business without the software.
Saw it yesterday myself. Took in our 2020 Escape for service and State Inspection...no dice...everything broke.
We're supposed to be the SECOND customer called when it gets fixed. Not heard anything yet
No one can afford a new car anyway. No loss.

Speak for yourself poor person
@@kevs2good133 I'm not poor. I'm just stingy. I invest in appreciating items. Cars are not worth it. My vehicle is paid off and I am ok with that.
RIGHT ON!
Parts driver here. They are not able to process parts orders. Sent home early yesterday and today. Might cost me a couple of days pay👎🏻😡
Here in Kansas City we've had a cyber attack on City, county governments. They also shut down the electronic highway signs and cameras which have been out since April. They are going to take down the electrical grid next. Imagine the chaos that will ensue
That’s God telling dealers if you’re not going to sell people cars you don’t need all these inventory management systems! 😂
God doesn't have time for selling cars
It's not funny - really kinda sad, because you are probably correct.
May 21, 2011 was the beginning of judgement day on the world { you were warned loudly and clearly throughout the world ! }
And it shall come to pass in that day, a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor. Zechariah 14;13
"Tumult" = disbelief & confusion ( ON PURPOSE, by design)
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh. Proverbs 1; 24-26
The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Proverbs 15;3
" beholding " means patiently waiting to extract vengeance. He can do it actively or passively by letting someone make a mistake or deliberately sin.
...Yep, your probably correct CONFUSION

All these years that dealerships have been screwing people under and still continues today I don't feel sorry for them. What comes around goes around. BOO! HOO! HOO!😭
Why do you feel dealerships are screwing the public? I would like to hear why you say this?
Could be karma.
Look up the meaning. It doesn't mean revenge against people you don't like.
@@653j521 I was thinking more along the lines of if you're a dealership constantly screwing over customers than maybe the dealership as a customer to a software company gets screwed over by them.
Hopefully that fits the definition.
Wow. This happened to a major manufacturer in Ohio. They will be down two weeks. Billion dollar company.
Colonial Oil was shut down and paid millions in ransom, which was relatively cheap. It doesn't get more serious than no fuel.
Turned down for service at dealership yesterday. Now I know why.
We hand wrote contracts one Sunday when the System went down. It's a pain in the ass, not the end of the world.
"All your eggs in one basket".... LOL
Service, Sales, and Finance was down all day yesterday and still down today
On top of this news, Stellantis announced they're cutting costs by 30%. Majority of expenses are on overhead (labor) and building occupancy (factories). A lot of good people are about to lose their jobs and it will send a ripple effect throughout the economy.
I work at an agricultural equipment dealer. Our CDK Heavy Equipment software was on and off yesterday, it shut down completely midday today. We're a pretty small dealer but we can't sell equipment, parts, and we're limited in the service department.
We were told ours was shut down as a precaution, and we got lucky this didn't happen in peak season.
It is important for every small business to have a back up plan, especially since the 2020 shutdown. We even have a manual card swiper with carbon paper on site just in case the internet goes down or wifi or power goes down and we are unable to process cards electronically. I do NOT trust certain entities anymore and neither should other small business owners. Have a plan to continue to operate without vendors that you usually depended on for certain services or products.
I agree with you completely!! And many think we are crazy to think that is a great idea. Multiple back up plans is the smart way to go!
@@KS-un3pi Plan A, B, and C
yep. parts guy here. this affects more than the sales dept. been down since here since wednesday morning. we are a large nationwide wholesale parts seller, and it is brutal right now. service depts are closed too.
Gonna be hard to find a lot of sympathy for the dealers..
I own a small dealership. I do all my paperwork and filing old school, paper, folders and locked cabinets. I am 100,% good to go.
A chain of 31 dealerships was hit by a cyber attack two weeks ago in my area. They were loosing millions daily.
Oh no those poor poor dealerships...the same ones who have ripped the customers for the last 3 years. 😏
Wow, what an eye opener. If I had not heard it from Brandon's mouth, I would have a hard time believing it costs $2K/day just to keep the "lights" on; amazing.
So if they sell you a car on paper... you'll be driving home and get pulled over and taken out of the vehicle because it shows as stolen. 😂🤣
If that’s what you want, just rent a car from Hertz-costs a lot less. 😂
I am in WA state near Seattle. I buy vehicles for a municipal government, and the local Ford dealer I normally buy from went down on this software yesterday, and told me it could take "a few days" to get resolved. I have a F450 truck chassis coming in, and this is delaying the delivery (it was supposed to be today). So, this is still going on.
Most dealerships don't have a plan when this happens. This is when old school car guy's at the dealership actually know what to do. Should have some old ro's and parts invoices and whatever else on hand to keep the business going.😃
🎻 This is me playing the worlds smalled violin for them.
Called my Subaru dealer and they said there system was down so I couldn't get a price for a part I need. Makes sense now.
I am up in Ontario, Canada. Back in April when my new car arrived, the dealership got hit with a Cyberattack and their servers were down for 4 days. They couldn't deliver cars. The dealership group that I deal with owns 15 car dealerships All of them were down for those 4 days. Scary.
My dealer is affected by this. We are doing hand invoices in the parts department. I sucks! CDK customer service takes 4ever to fix issues as it is. I shiver how long it's guna take to fix this.
Working in the insurance industry in auto claims, all my shops were unable to order any OEM parts for repairs. Accidents don't stop happening so it's just creating a backlog that keeps getting bigger the longer the system is down.
I was at my Toyota dealership in Sanford, North Carolina that day to service my 07 Camry, what a frigging mess. I called them this morning, still down.
Why can't they input The sale like they did thirty years ago? Make the sale now input it into your system later???
Because nothing else works like it did 30 years ago either, because every other point in the system that you're interacting with has also modernized in the same way you have. I work in a completely different field from automotive sales and if our main system was taken offline like this we couldn't simply "go back in time"
Too lazy, too dumb
People can’t do anything on paper anymore
@@Holabirdsupercluster yep, the entire system has degraded.
@@petershaver5006 More fragile, due to increased complexity, AND more degraded, due to lack of investment, maintenance, and training
When you give a hacker a shitty trade in value on their 2023 Tundra.
Brandon, 37 Findley Dealerships have been hacked as of June 10th 2024 in Vegas to Arizona. Can't even get an oil change 🥺
Wow
Seems awfully convenient.
Not saying there's malice on the side of the automakers, but not kicking that out of bed either.
God forbid they write everything up by hand and input later.
Yep, I work for a GM dealership in Lafayette, LA. We are at the mercy of CDK and the cyber attack. We are on day 5 of no DMS server. We are handwriting service RO's and new and used car sales contracts. They are asking for $18 million. We have not idea when we can expect to be operational. More than likely, many dealers will join Reynolds and Reynolds and drop CDK. We have several problems with CDK almost daily.
The Findlay group in Las Vegas was closed for one week. That is 33 new car dealerships. I bought a 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid Sport L on the first day they were back up and got a killer deal because they just needed to move some units quick.
My daughter is a Honda service advisor and she said the same thing that the repair order system was down nationwide.
Need to get your daughter away from the criminal organization service writer everybody knows their crooked
This happened to a company I worked for. It looks months to get it straightened out.
It is the service provider themselves that are taking the biggest hit on this.
Friday the 18th Findaly Automotive was hit by a cyberattack and still down. It's unfortunate that more dealerships are getting attacked. Peoples paychecks and families are suffering 😞
I feel for the service guys. Not sales though.
Yup happening at my store so it’s four square central here not slowing down here
Interesting, probably the last person who could manually sell a car at a dealership retired several years ago.
PS - surprised car dealerships don’t have a manual workaround to do critical functions. Do they still carry paper forms?
Wonderful. Maybe now the dealerships will be more incentivized to give better deals to catch up on sales lost!
Hey Brandon…..I work for a large automotive reconditioning company. I can tell you Sonic, Hendrick, AutoNation and Group1 auto groups are all affected. We can’t RO’s or PO’s
I feel bad for your dealership, but not for the franchise ones!.:)
My car is at the dealership for service and I was supposed to get it back yesterday. But the attack shut everything down and they still have my truck. When they told me why i couldn't get my vehicle back, i was like "yeah right".......lol.
Well yeh they were right
:) THANKS for sharing! OMG, maybe Ransomware for Nitrogen Fees and Clear Coat the Franchise Dealers ! ! ! ALL the BEST and Cheers ! : )
My daughter ran into a computer problem at a franchise dealer service department yesterday. Apparently they restarted it later but it screwed them up.
Yea last car I got at a Chevy dealership I had to come back the next day because they couldn't print because the internet was down. It has been 10 years since I wrote up a car deal with pen and paper(the dealership had no power that day). It is a lot of work and took me almost 30mins to fill out the sales contract, power of attorney, odometer and temp tag. I always go outside and double check the stock number and vin number before finishing the deal.
Security doesn't make a company money, but a lack of it can cost a lot.
I like that you ask your viewers not to donate money. You are a good man. How about you takes those donated money and pass it on to your buyer in a form of discount. Just a thought.
CDK (formerly part of ADP). I worked for them 7 years in NJ
Yesterday are dealer couldn't schedule our repairs due to systems all down
😂 I purchased a new Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9, back in the day. And the salesman wrote down the wrong VIN, from another 5.9 they had. At the end of the month they checked their inventory and couldn't find the one I had. So they reported it stolen. It had lojack and VA State Police Officer visited my wife's place of work and told her the vehicle was reported stolen. Dealership wanted the vehicle back and wanted us to take the other one, in a different color. But lucky we took a trip to Bristol and had too many miles on it, so they redid the paperwork. But they gave us a hard time about it.
I have a a12 VW Passat SEL with 96k. Great car
Not embarrassing smart your way works for you and the customer
Yes, I have a hail job needing a bunch of trim parts that's being held up because of that hack. They can't even sell me in stock parts, I'm starting to miss microfiche days of old
Just sell direct to consumers and avoid the stealerships.
Good luck with that. Where will you test drive? Buying direct from the manufacturer will never happen. Look at what's happening to Tesla. Where will you bring your purchase for repairs?
@@glynnhebert7573 Tesla has the number 1 selling vehicle on the planet. That's what happened.
brandons new slogan, "We make mistakes too!" ;p
Brandon? I was just watching CNBC and they reported that computer hack of CDK is a Ransomeware Attack. The hackers want to get paid! You gotta talk about this more on your TH-cam channel. Okay? 😊
❤ the fact you say keep your money.❤ do you have a pdga #?
Haha... I've played in exactly one tournament... I think I do but have no clue how to find it
It has affected us in the auto collision repair area since Ford uses that software to sell us parts
Generally speaking, there are not a lot of people capable of doing anything manually.
Take away their phone or computer, they are screwed
WOW, if this includes a data breach, then there will be a HUGE lawsuit.
In texas there are only about 26 sales day in a month.
Doesn’t matter-they’re not selling vehicles anyways!
Besides, they have a pile of money from all their market adjustments.
With this hack... It also involves parts. As I work in the collision industry we are forced to buy parts for cars who dont use this software... Even at a higher price sometimes its the only way we can take care of our customers to give them their cars back within a good time frame. It does cut into a bottom line but worth it at this time
The thing about cyber attacks is that the attacker is often impossible to identify. It could be a dude in a basement with a computer or a group of hackers in the US or a country or self-inflicted false flag to serve another purpose.
If it's on a large scale I'm leaning towards a alphabet agency being involved.
Tell them hackers I need a gt dark horse !! 😂
I went to fill up at a gas station yesterday and their card reader at the pump was not working!! I thought it was really strange.
Any updates? We were sitting in a dealership ready to buy, and the computers went down while we were sitting there. They said they could not print out the sales contracts until they were back online.
Gubagoo is sql attached to that. So it is probably more then just that company
Just a comment on the HertzTeslas you tried to buy before. Shows you what kind of cut rate price Hertz got
buying a s**t load of metal at one time. They turned you down flat, right?
They piss of the wrong people. Looks like another markup fee coming. Dealer shutdown fee $15000 on your next car purchase.
Dealers cover much of the overhead through service department profits.
Yup my bro is a Foreman at a Ford Dealer found out this morning all their software went down had to write tickets by hand he said it was a nightmare.
That's what happens when you don't have a fall back system. Things worked fine before the internet.
@@thystaff742 Fine? It worked most of the time, slowly, if you had a small business?
It’s tough to have secure software when you want it done cheaply 😂
Usually companies do not need appreciate a cyber team until after an attack 😅
The big Ford dealer in Oregon got hacked. Not a big deal unless you are a U-Haul and 90 percent of your fleet is Ford.
Over centralization
My daughter works for a Nissan dealership and apparently the hackers are asking for a very large amount of money.
Just went to my Honda dealership and yup they were shut downed
Another miracle of modern technology.
Complexity is the enemy of reliability.
Sorry to hear that, but a lot of industries are hit with ransomware these days, I know most companies in our industry were hit with ransomware, you need cyber insurance, gotta be prepared for that sadly.
Dealers always asks for your DL when you want to test drive, I always wonder what happens when they make a copy, how safe is the copy?
They got hit twice. They got hit Tuesday night and then Wednesday night too.
Today, if you don't pay your payments and are up for repo on an EV. They will simply shut it off remotely. All of the convenience, call service nd have them remotely unlock the doors, with that convenience comes risk. What if a hacker remotely shut down an entire fleet of vehicles? It can't be done while on and moving. When you are parked though, it can be done.
I have zero sympathy for car dealerships when most have taken advantage of consumers for decades. I spoke to a salesman a few months ago and he said a Ford Maverick had 15k market adjustment.
Can't get my car back cause of this. Hope the figure it out
I've seen CDK operate. I'm not surprised.
Cybercriminals are stealing houses via deed theft. Could they do it with car titles with this data?
