Thank you very much Dace for the chat and your excellent questions! Sorry for my English I was a bit stressed 😅. I cleared DoDonpachi not long after the video (lol).
The interview was before my journey on Dodonpachi DaiOuJou which changed a bit my vision of Shmups (and by far my most difficult 1CC).
For beginner tips, I didn't mention: Watch different replays (and be aware some are scoring-oriented so players take more risks, it's good to also watch basic 1CC clear) and practice with save states to understand how different patterns work!
In old Shmups there's often a checkpoint system which also makes them more brutal to me, because of this you're naked after a death and it's almost impossible to recover.

One of the best MTPs yet! I loved the discussion about bullet hell. It’s very intimidating to see, but the design philosophy is very generous to the player once you know how it all actually works:) Funny that danmaku players feel the same about old school shooters - “memo” is not as grueling as new players make it out to be, it’s like hearing a new song and eventually you know it by heart:). Nobody thinks “I hate all these new songs I enjoy listening to but I’m going to have to memorize them!”
