His growth from a depressed man kept in a prison and puppeted by delusional old men, to growing and accepting his role as the Tsar the Russian people need. Nearly all events in the warlord stage are about Mikhail and so the story is naturally going in the direction of going with Mikhail's path. This was addressed a bit in the new Smuta tree where we are granted more events about just Shepunov, including a very personal look into Shepunov with an event where he visits his mentor who dies in the first few months of the game and reminisces about how he achieved his mentor's dream as well the change of ideology to reactionary nationalism. However, it is still incredibly unsatisfying when Mikhail loses the coup. Plus Shepunov's regime is a generic military junta with monarchist flavor and shilling to the Japanese. Nikita I is just a puppet and is perfectly compliant in the role so no conflict then, Shepunov himself is a strongman concerned with his own power 1st and foremost and so isn't the most intresting character. This makes him incredibly boring compared to Mikhail who IMO has the best plotline in all of TNO.
Haven't played him yet but i doubt that he would top Shafvarevich in terms of boredom. Idk if he had a more interesting path while he was fascist but after the update he is by far the most bland and uninteresting warlord i've ever played. I expected at least some interesting Tomsk Modernist like infrastructure action from him but he is full on agrarian and not the ok-ish Decembrist type.
For the trigger to get the pravda newspaper, they declared any russian warlord which was either socialist or communist. Seems they didn't account for the Ancoms lol.

Universal healthcare, free higher education, development of industrial technology to fix Russia's ailing infrastructure, human expression put on a pedestal, workplace democracy and high wages, already-existing political democracy, and strong welfare to ensure no Russian ails ever again. They even beat out socdem Komi. Last I played Sablin, he barely even has half this stuff.

Gumilovy's ideology is depotist not Paternalism. However my main problem with Gumilovy in TNO is that the ideas presented are more Aleksandr Dugin’s style of Eurasia than his own. I did hear that Gumilovy is being reworked to have 2 paths. One featuring his style of Eurasian than a path where a more extreme view of Eurasian takes power and that'll be the new Ultranat path but take that with a grain of salt. Shepunov is also kinda iffy. I get what they went for, with the white army being kept in exile for so long. They've have nostalgia goggles to the old Russian Empire and want to recreate it as they remember in any way possible (the only person who does this is Shulgin and even he doesn't come anywhere near close) but it feels like Shepunov isn't extreme enough to be ultranat (then again the devs might want to make ultranat a bit more than "WE ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE" nationalism).

I'm pretty sure Gagarin doesn't exist in the TNOTL, since he was born during the second World war in western Russia. It is possible that he dies early in this TL and gets killed by the Germans.

If you're referring to Matkovsky, he does get a semi-redemption arc that sees him actually try to improve the quality of life for Russians, and he seems to abandon the whole "minorities bad" shtick that Rodzaevsky and Vagner likes to jerk off to and focus on getting Moscow back and reuniting Russia with the help of the US.

@idkbad694 It was a bit of a hyperbole statement. But yeah Modernists Tomsk bans everyone who hasn't attended at least a university level education from voting. To combat this, they do make university free but even the event where they pass this points out that this measure is ineffective as most Russians don't have time to go to uni when centeral Siberia is still recovering from the warlord period and mass food insecurity means that people are farming instead of going to education in order to live.
