Arguing for hedonism is hard given it's flaws 👀 but I think Beno made some extremely good points 👏🏽 Although discomfort / pain / suffering is inherent to the human condition I don't think it's necessary in order to find meaning. I think the glorification of overcoming suffering can be as dangerous as the glorification of the pursuit of pleasure. We eat because of discomfort and we stop eating because of discomfort. Unpleasureable feelings are what keep us alive and help direct our behaviour. The wisdom in Buddhism is noticing that discomfort will always happen and that we should not become attached to these feelings, which is what ultimately leads to suffering (the mental anguish derived from discomfort). The main problem with hedonism in my eyes is that it doesn't address someones relationship with discomfort in a skillful way. Instead it focuses on pleasure, which, like you both agreed, could lead people into addiction
nice vid👌🏽- i think u coulda clarified Hedonism further by stating that its pursuit of pleasure with NO REGARD to future well being or that hedonism regards any and all pain/discomfort as disvaluable otherwise it opens up to arguments that putting in hard work in the pursuit of pleasure is a hedonistic approach when it isn’t
Thank you for watching, truly appreciate it! Yeah I hear you although I believe there is some regard for future wellbeing within the framework of the philosophy. Hedonism is predicated upon maximising pleasure and minimising pain. Therefore I somewhat agree with you, following hedonistic principles allows for ‘hard work’ but in reality the work can never be that hard as minimising pain is a pillar of the philosophy.
Good convo, definitely a key topic - I think the law of diminishing returns could've been mentioned. Pleasure is also so, because pain exists. Without pain, there can be no hedonism, but the pursuit of hedonism itself, given the law of diminishing returns, can in and of itself become a 'pain.'
@@ThinkTwiceTH-cam it does as a singular way of thinking but i think hedonism is really basic human nature so it does come into play with most decisions we make i.e why we also need discipline
Great Convo! Thanks!

Your point on diminishing returns is interesting. Would you say that’s an internal contradiction that debunks hedonism?
