Are lithium batteries really worth all the extra money? After over 3.5 years using AGM and working our batteries to death editing these videos we can give you a real life comparison of them. We let you know if we thin Lithium batteries are really the Ultimate Van Life Upgrade!
We are still waiting on our final delivery of Philly's Irish Passport, but with that being delayed we decide to hit the road and explore Ireland in the mean time, and really put our new battery to the test!

⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We are starting a Japanese road trip and excited to bring you all along.

Another great video - you live in a beautiful place. The excitement about the lithium battery was infectious! We only have one lead-acid battery in our campervan. But yesterday I replaced the old PWM solar controller with a modern MPPT one and suddenly the solar panel was actually charging both the leisure and starter batteries; it doesn't take much these days to make me do a happy dance! 😂

I was thinking about getting lithium batteries but the cost was out of my reach unfortunately. Next time though I'll seriously consider it.
I'm happy with my AGMs at the minute but lithium is the way forward.

Awesome video guys. Watching you from my own little road trip in Spain - currently on the coast near Murcia. That battery will he a game changer. Lithium is so superior. Did you ever look into a 12v laptop charger? I’ve been running my laptop from 12v for tts last couple of weeks and it uses so little power. 240v standard charger is hot in use but 12v is cold, it must waste so much stepping it down, and stepping up with an inverter. Anyway thanks for another 30 mins of entertainment. Love how much fun you have together, you’re definitely fbest friends and soul mates, lovely to see. All the best from Spain.

@Philly & Keely | Chapter By Chapter Weather is fantastic, really hot. Its very nice having daily sun and heat but also worrying as there's been 40 degree heat in Spain and drought since the start of April, which obviously is climate change.
CONGRATS!!! 🎉 The new battery is shiny, it's shiny, but not only that, its also shiny! Going from three AGM cells to a 300 aH lithium battery is, what, a *fourfold* increase in usable capacity?! And it fits like it was meant to be. You mentioned briefly the settings on the DC-to-DC charger; do you know what Martha's alternator is rated at? I've seen other channels switching to lithium mention to make sure the system is set to limit what it will take from the chassis system, preventing the alternator from getting overworked.

Thanks Aaron, it is honestly incredible, it handled our two day edit like an absolute champion, battery of dreams! I have absolutely no idea about our alternator lol, I will have to inspect that! I remember Ben talking about it when him and Chesca upgraded so I will have to check. But we only installed one B2B thing where I think they installed two which is a bigger drain, but I will check it to makesure all is good. I think we are cuz we only installed one not double, but I will check.
Hello,
Limiting the alternator is only needed when charging directly from it - it's to do with lithium having next to no resistance, so the alternator outputs its full current rating at low RPM, which can cause overheating on some models. Having a split charger/relay is a good protection as it switches the charging current on and off depending on the level of the engine battery (plus it essentially connects both batteries together, so the alternator will still have some resistance shown to it), but a DC to DC or B2B charger like Philly & Keely have is the ideal protection as it fully limits the charge current.

Awww thanks so much! The battery has literally changed our daily life, I'm not joking. We used to have to edit at cafes or pay for a campsite, but this weekend we editted for two full days and the battery never went below 84% it's absolutely mind blowing how much better they are than our previous batteries. Definitely worth the investment when the time comes.

We used our battery charger and left it on charge with family member over night. It's like a plug in one that you can use at campsites or houses etc. It has two terminals on it but you plug it in to 240v

Now this duck showed up in Central Park a few years back and it has returned this year . People say it has a band on its leg . So I guess it escaped from someone’s house . If you are not running a TH-cam channel you don't need anything, no second battery, no split charge system, no "park you van in the sun" solar and certainly nothing with blue teeth..
Yeah, AGM is sufficient for 12v system, but for anyone working full-time on laptops this is epic!! We have needed it for so long, many people wouldn't need this level of power, but for us it's incredible 🥰🥰🥰
@@phillyandkeely But it seems everyone wants a leisure battery and a ton of solar panels. They then sit in their vans all day watching TV...what's the point of a campervan, you may as stay home. We live in Portugal and go a a lovely seaside resort of Figueira da Foz and don't see 90% of the occupants, they are all watching TV.
We try to only watch stuff in bed, day time we like to be outdoors 🥰🥰 (apart from on edit days obviously, then we are tethered to screens haha) best to take advantage of the freedom the van provides 💪

I think you are the sort of people who promote "action", lets see more, I am 71 years old and still get out and about, we are off to Greece in a couple of weeks in a Vivaro, with Boo the dog.
