    I never knew of the existence of Father Ted until you guys started reacting to it. My attitude was, what the hell is this? Oh well, I'll give it a try. I went from that inauspicious moment to today's reminiscence of the show that brought me nearly to tears. It truly was a magical show.

    It’s so devastating to think of when I heard/read that Dermot Morgan had so much doubt and self-consciousness in himself as an actor, and thought at the time he was doing a horrendous job in the role, since he had never acted in his life before Father Ted. Boy was he wrong. If only he was still alive today, he would’ve been proven wrong about his acting ability, and instead realised that he is still one of the most adored stars, and men, in Irish history. And not just in Ireland, but many others in different countries too, like you two! What a fantastic, funny man he was. Hope he and Frank Kelly are having a ball up in heaven together, two of the most amazing Irish actors of all time.
    Father Ted remains my favourite show of all time, even for a 22 year old (not many of my friends like it because it’s not in their “time”, and they’re fools) and no matter how many times I watch every episode, I will laugh until my sides are hurting each time.
    I’m so glad you two enjoyed the series, you have great taste and a great sense of humour too! Love from Co. Kildare, Ireland 💚

    I was lucky euro see the last episode filmed , it was absolutely fantastic, between scenes they showed the outside filming, one thing that happened as we were taken to our seats, we went down the wrong corridor and the priests walked out, Dougal , gave me the amazing and fantastic Dougal smile fantastic night, but next day heard Ted had died so I loved it but tinged with sadness, bless you guys ❤

    As a true Irish man from Dublin, have loved your reactions on father ted. I would to recommend to you both 12 Days of Christmas by Frank Kelly(Father Jack). It’s pure class and hilarious, you may want to save it for Christmas time. Also a side note. A couple of years ago I drove Father Dougal in my taxi to a gig in Dublin he was doing.

    I grew up through the seventies and we were spoilt in the UK for great comedy with Porridge, Faulty Towers ,Dads Army ,Steptoe and Son ,Open all Hours ,Rising Damp and the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and I know it was filmed in the nineties but I think Father Ted was the funniest most demented comedy of the lot .
    I’ve watched every series many times and I know most of it word for word but it still makes me cry with laughter.
    Absolute genius .

    • @rwlynch3468
      @rwlynch3468 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All these great British comedies have similar themes which make them great. (Not sure if you agree). But apart from the writing and jokes, they are 1. predominantly often set in one main location or room (Porridge - prison cell, FT - hotel reception/restaurant, DA - church hall/office or bank, S&S living room) and / or 2. The jokes are often bantered between a generation gap (Porridge - Young and old, DA - Pike vs older vs Jones as oldest, S&S - Father and son).
      Father Ted was same, two main generations, 3 if you include Jack, and predominantly one or two locations.
      Only Fools too, Rodney was a different generation to Del Boy then Grandad / Uncle Albert, and set in the living room or pub.

    • @jamesbatten8659
      @jamesbatten8659 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rwlynch3468 Yes totally agree comedy that was hilarious then and will still be funny in a hundred years .
      Unfortunately I feel most comedy today has lost its way ,
      Too afraid of offending someone , Love thy Neighbour was a perfect example where they called each other Homky and Sambo and didn’t take offence .
      Like the the Major describing the difference between Wogs and Coons when he took his lady to see the cricket at Lords , they wouldn’t allow it nowadays .
      Used too love Eddie Murphys stand up but always thought it sad that it was only a black audience, except for the odd Italian
      That it seemed that there was still this racial divide as if white people didnt ike or appreciate Black humour.
      Nice watching Bill Burr break these boundaries where he appeals to a black and white crowd with his humour.

    Brad, you picked up on how similar the Irish West Coast looks to the Canadian east coast. There was geological documentary on Irish TV about a year ago that explained that about 50 million years ago, what is now north America separated from what is now north western Europe. Ireland and indeed Scotland were at this fracture point. Geologist from both Canada and Ireland stated that chemical analysis of the coastal rock formations were identical. Apparently we continue to separate from each other at the pace that our finger nails grow.

    I thoroughly enjoyed that watch-along with you. It's such a nice look back at the whole Father Ted thing, getting a feel for how they felt making it. One big, happy family, all the way through, welded together forever. More than any other show than I can think of, it's created a sort of extended family; those who've seen it can't help but get drawn in by its charms, and if you ever meet someone else who has seen it too you're pretty much friends already.
    Pauline McLynn has indeed gone on to other things, and also has a website where you can buy tea cosies (for keeping tea pots warm). They're brilliant!
    For me, one of the heroines is Cheryl McCormack and the McCormack family, owners of the Parochial House. She didn't have to, but after regularly having had the film crew on their front lawn and no doubt all over the house, she then opened up for tea by appointment. This was perhaps the gentlest and kindest way possible of letting fans of the show (including Steven Spielberg apparently) get the absolute most out of the journey to their front gate. I hear they've recently stopped opening for tea. Whilst that's a tragedy for those of us who have not yet made the journey to "Craggy Island", we have to remember that it's been 28 years of their lives that have, one way or other, been thoroughly altered by the show. So, on behalf of all the fans of the show, thank you very much!
    And then there's Ted Fest. Held on a small Island (Inishmore) in about March. That's about as craggy as you can get, and brilliant. Still going, next year's is 7th to 10th March.

      'Derry Girls' is a unique and popular recent comedy that might be also be a nice follow-on to 'Father Ted', set in and around Londonderry during 'the troubles' 25 years back. Nuns and priests in this one as well with a fair selection of other offbeat Irish characters, but the main characters - teenage Catholic schoolgirls and their relatives (such as 'Uncle Colm', who seems to be a tribute to FT's 'Father Austin Purcell - the most boring priest in Ireland'). are an absolute delight. Ardal O'Hanlon (Father Dougal) plays 'Uncle Eamonn' too.

Also Mr's Brown's Boy's D'Movie, based a comedy TV program (Mr's Brown's Boy's) that I've seen people react to in full on here.

      He makes a surprise appearance in 'the roast of Count Dankula', in a very heartwarming section where the two reconcile after Linehan had previously denounced Dankula unjustly. I guarantee that he won back a lot of goodwill with Father Ted fans within Dank's fanbase, for being gracious enough to admit fault and apologise. So, as badly as the mainstream has bee treating Linehan, he does have his supporters.
