  • As we embarked on our Northern Expedition, we stopped on our road trip between Gloucestershire and Northumberland to have a Sunday Roast Dinner at a Yorkshire Pub. It had great reviews for it's Sunday Carvery. We love eating Sunday Roast Dinner in the UK, and love trying different pubs if we are on the road on a Sunday. While homecooked is always best, if you have to be away (or you are like me and too lazy to make all that stuff at home!), then try a Sunday Roast Dinner at an English Pub. We were excited to try a Sunday Carvery in Yorkshire, since Yorkshire Puddings are my favourite part of the meal... and figured the best place to have one is YORKSHIRE!

    You should perhaps try a Toby Carvery - it's a national chain so they will have pubs/restaurants in most places throughout the country. Like many chains they have some really reliable decent outlets and others which tend to be a bit hit and miss. When the first UK lock down ended last year, and we were given a modicum of freedom, hankering for a carvery roast I visited the local one - The Bowshaw Arms. As far as I remember, you were called in turn by table to the servery - instead of queuing as used to be the norm. It's pot luck whether you get a decent carver or not, ie someone who isn't shy with the carving knife, or someone who only believes in giving you a free sample when it comes to the meat. There's usually four meats to choose from - turkey, beef, pork and gammon. And sometimes lamb too. You put your own veg on the plate and can therefore choose what you want and pile the plate as high as you like. There's a choice of gravy you can ladle on, and also apple and cranberry sauces. It's worth a shot.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen a lot of Toby Carveries on the roadside in our many travels around England. I haven't been to one yet. Our very favourite carvery was in Herefordshire. Like you said, they had several types of meat, so you could have a wee slice of turkey with cranberry and stuffind and ALSO have a taste of roast pork and roast beef. I counted up that I had about 12 sides on my plate when I went there. It was heavenly!! And they had good Yorkshires, even though it wasn't up North ;-) Hopefully we can get back there this summer sometime!

    I was brought up in Doncaster and went to school there, although I have moved away since. I still have a soft spot for Donny, so I am glad you found the meal reasonably good. Doncaster is an industrial town and certainly not a tourist hotspot. It does, however attract visitors when the horse racing is on. Doncaster racecourse holds some popular events. Doncaster folk are very down to earth and expect good value for money so I would think that your meal was reasonably priced compared with Cheltenham.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny you mention that... when we entered the pub, everyone turned at stared at us like we were space aliens who had just landed in a flying saucer on the front step! I guess it is NOT a touristy place and to all the locals we were quite the novelty! haha

      @@MagentaOtterTravels I can only assume that it was the Stetson hats and Pearl-handled colt revolvers that blew your cover lol.
      I have been thinking about my previous comment and believe it is high time that Doncaster earned a place on the tourist trail. As one of your fellow countrymen, Bill Bryson, journalist and author, oncesaid, you are never more than 10 miles from something interesting in U.K. Doncaster is no exception and I seriously recommend that if you undertake that trip again, stop over at one of the many decent Doncaster hotels and sample some of the following attractions:
      Number one would be The Yorkshire Wildlife Park, just south of Doncaster. The park has re-homed rescued wild animals in almost natural surroundings. When I last visited some years ago, they had rescued some lions that had spent their lives in cages in an East European zoo. To see them enjoying life in the grassland was a delight.
      Then there is Brodsworth Hall and Gardens on the northern fringe of the town. Close by is another former stately home - Cusworth Hall. That also has lovely gardens and a lake.
      If you go downtown look out for The Mansion House in the High Street. There are only three mansion houses in the country. The others are in London and York. A Mansion House is defined as the official residence of a mayor.
      For a local beauty spot try Spotborough Water Falls and stroll along the path on the banks of the River Don, from which the town got its name. Doncaster was first settled by the Romans who recognised the place as a good place to cross the River Don when travelling South to North.
      If you have time be sure to go to the amazingly unspoiled village of Hooton-Pagnell, a little to the north.
      I think you will agree that there is plenty there to keep you amused for 24 hours.

    I’m pkeased the roast tasted good, it didn’t look too appetising to me. Mainly the veg - the cabbage looked like the type your grandma would boil for hours, making the whole house stink. Much better some shredded bright green savoy cabbage stir fried in olive oil or butter until the edges are slightly tinged with a scattering of caraway seeds - yum.

    To be honest I'd have been hard pushed to choose between the pork and the beef...I suspect the pre-covid carvery norm would allow you to pick some of each...but I'm the sort of pig who'd love having mustard, horseradish and apple sauce on my plate at the same time...so I'd also have relished the roast and mashed potato, though not so much the surfeit of carrots, but perhaps all the other veggies would make up for it...most important, glad the cookery was good, though again the beef was perhaps a tad more well done than it would've been in a carvery situation...gravy looked splendid - Overall it looked very decent for a Pub Roast and I hope it was as good as it looked!

    Nice looking food there, looks like a decent pub. Re Yorkshire as a starter, yeah, that was a lot bigger a thing a long time ago. Though I've never actually seen it before on a menu. The Yorkshire was a filler. The ingredients were/are very cheap, as opposed to meat, hugely expensive, way back then. And so people would serve it to fill up on. Then with the mains, though you may only get a sliver of meat you'd still feel full, and happy.
    Also, originally it wasn't these, smallish, individual, type little puds. It would be made in deep baking trays. It would come out like a huge sponge cake. Then, once portioned, you could end up with either slices, or a veritable brick of that Yorkshirey goodness.
    I remember it came up in conversation once, talking with my dad. He remembered having it that way as a child, he was born in the 1920's. He was also a great cook. He said he'd make it the old fashioned way our next Sunday dinner, so we could try it that way. I thought it was great. Like a large piece of savoury sponge, light and airy in the middle, with that crispy exterior. Top tip should you ever make it that way. chef's perk, get a corner piece to maximise those crispy edges :)

      My dad was born in the 20s as well. In fact yesterday would have been his 97th birthday!
      Yes, I love the crispy edges of Yorkshires too... They are so great, I could just be happy with a big Yorshire filled with gravy and a few grams of meat. Put some veg on the side and call it a meal!
      John, you need to see the Yorkshires in next week's video. They ended up being crazy big and fabulous!

      @@jfergs.3302 I saw a pan at The Range a couple days ago that I REALLY wanted to buy. It was a lovely YP pan that would make big shallow Yorkies, not the size of a dinner plate but not the size of a muffin either. Mashed potato and roast potatoes is definitely a thing in Yorkshire. My family is from South Yorkshire and growing up we always had both at Sunday lunch or new potatoes and roast in summer. We also used to have large Yorkshire puddings with gravy as a separate first course.
