Making THAT Marvelous Mrs Maisel RED DRESS (and losing my mind) - I heart Costumes

  • I finally made the Marvelous Mrs Maisel Red Dress and I am in love with it. Yes, I know I messed up the back pleat on the skirt, but it's fixed now.
    My patterning was not too far away from the original Costume Industry Coalition pattern, but I was in absolute AWE with those sleeves and the sneaky princess seams.
    Very sneaky!
    I heart Costumes. What about you?
    In what other colors should I make this dress?!

    Love the dress!
    Side zipper zipping from the armpit to the waist will help with the getting in and out on your own. As in ( zipping closed) bottom of zipper is in armpit and the actual zip ends at the waist.

      Yeah... I think I will start sewing more side zippers from now on... so annoying heheheh

    I totally feel your confusion with the 5/8" allowances. I use 1cm, so I have to be careful when I sew with commercial patterns. And sometimes I still get i wrong. I have a very lovely top that needs to be picked apart and re-seamed and I don't feel like doing it 😅
    I love the dress and also red looks amazing on you!!

    Would love to see you play more with this dress pattern adding a bolero or long sleeves or long skirt!
    Could this dress be made reversible? Inside complete different color and flip it inside out.

      Thank you so much!
      The reversible idea is so cool! The color that is not in use at the moment could act as a petticoat for the dress!
      I have to try this :D

    • @Seamstressed
      @Seamstressed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh thank you! Yeah... this one turned weird. I always understitch and cut the lining 1/8 inch smaller so it will pull the fashion fabric to the inside, but this one didn't want to obey me. I think the fabrics weights and weave were too different from one another and they clashed horendously. The fact that it's white didn't help either hahaha

    This is an amazing dress! It is complicated, though. It reminds me of my mm's dresses when she was young. They would look amazing! Do make some more.

    Looks beautiful!!! I'm currently sewing up my mock of this dress... having some issues with the underarm area. Any helpful tips? I'm thinking when I sew the parts of the bodice together I didn't line things up correctly....

    • @Seamstressed
      @Seamstressed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh no! What happened? Can you describe it?
      Lining up the pieces is kinda weird with this pattern, tbh. I had to mark the seam allowances on the cut pieces to know what I was doing.

    • @kiraph
      @kiraph 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeamstressedI'm having difficulty getting a clean corner, so I don't know if where I am sewing 'up to the marked dot' is correct. Do you leave seam allowance from the dot so the edges line up (after you've clipped) or do you take the seam over the top of the marked dot? I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually with a some playing, but any insight from someone who has made it before would be awesome. :) Thanks for reply btw.

    Which bodice size did you choose? Or did you do a FBA?

    • @Seamstressed
      @Seamstressed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't remember the exact size, but I always measure my bust to define that, as it is my widest area at the moment (for dresses). The thing is... I am "proportionally wide" on the top part, that the standard pattern fits well on the shoulders, but I still have a smaller waist, so I always have to take it in. For this one, no FBA was necessary, but if you have a smaller frame, but larger bewbs, I suggest you take the shoulder measurement instead and make and FBA ;)

    Ok. Do linings if you want. I like linings too. But, to make a facing sot properly you need to understitch it. (Look up Evelyn Woods channel for this she has a great video explaining it.) sometimes I dont want to line things and have the garment be thicker or
    Hotter if its summer.

      German patterns (and I think metric patterns in general) have a narrower SA and I draft mine without considering it, so I am used to cutting by eye (and VERY narrow). 5/8ths was really a shock for me somehow hahaha.
