So subtly done... Susie making her point and proving her point to Midge all at the same time... Midge says wistfully " I think youll fall in love again." Susie answers, "I'm sure it will have the same disastrous outcome." Midge says "Why would you say that?" Susie?: "Were you ever a blonde?" Amazng subtext. Extrodinaroly well written and executed.

@@rahouljuandekobbe8895 The way I read it, Susie wasn't really hinting at the hair color at all but the parallel it represented.
By asking if Midge was ever a blonde, Susie is trying to prove a point that Midge and Hedy are the same type of person, and since there are several subtextual clues (and Alex Borstein confirmed it herself) that Susie is in love with Midge, Susie likely remains pessimistic towards the idea of being in love again for that reason. If Hedy and Midge are the same, why would the outcome be any less disastorous this time around?
What's more is Midge and Hedy both experimented with women in college, express their femininity in very similar ways, and both got engaged to men right after college. To Susie's knowledge, Midge and Hedy are straight women who could never reciprocate the same feelings Susie has for them because men will always be their endgame.
I think there's also some irony with the way that Midge obliviously misses Susie's point and responds that she was blonde for a bit, *in college* - pointing out the temporariness of both Midge and Hedy's female romantic relationships and the time period they happened in. I've also noticed a theme of this show using college as a device to throw all of its queer backstory into.
Anyway, I could have read into that more than it actually was but since I'm a lesbian myself I've gotten pretty fluent with tuning into queer subtext in media LMAO

Alex needs to win another Emmy for this scene alone. Not many actors can pull off funny and heartbreaking, tough and so vulnerable all in a short scene. By the way, I think a part of Hedy still loved "Susan" and was extremely jealous of Midge's and Susie's bond.

I wish we had gotten more personal moments like this with Susie, about her life, this my favorite scene in the whole show. So much nuance that could be expanded on, and Susie admitting she’s in love with Midge but Midge is so blind ugh breaks my heart but I love it. I wish there were more shows with butch lesbians during this time period, even the little love story she shared was one of the best i’ve heard. The heartbreak in her voice when she said “but I just wanted to talk to you” UGH 💔

@@imjustfiguringstuffout6866 Honestly, either! Though I was more thinking about her past with Hedy, since she had made it clear she wanted to reopen communication with Susie, and her husband telling Midge that he and his wife had an arrangement in an earlier episode had left the door open for me to speculate that maybe their marriage was actually a front of some kind, and maybe she was still holding a real torch for Susie. Either way, I’m sad that it’s over too. 😭
