Her parenting is one of my favourite things about her character. It feels so cathartic to see a character who probably would never have had children had the idea not been so unthinkable at the time. She loves and cares for her children, but being a mother isn't what fulfills her and it shows. I've grown up being told I would change my mind about not wanting kids of my own since before I was even 10. I'm almost 30 now and nothing has changed. I still like but never want children, and I'm still expected to change my mind by so many around me. I imagine I would be the same kind of mother at Miriam. And it's really nice to see a mom not be dramatically terrible, but also clearly not in love with motherhood despite the social expectations.
how do you deal with all the comments people make, especially by other women? i feel this way sometimes, but it's viewed as almost unnatural in my community to not want children after marriage.
@@minminnnn its never not frustrated me, but I (or I try to) have patience with friends and family. For strangers I’ll usually keep the subject short and say I know myself well enough, or that I don't think I need a reason not to have kids. They don't need to hear my personal justification. As I get older I feel more confident that I don't need to justify myself or give into ayone elses idea what will make me happy. When you do things that goes against what others find normal others will almost always react with shock, and that shock will always sting psychologically. I try and remember that it's just the early survival part of our brains reacting and that I don't need to listen. For them it's nothing personal and they mean no harm, but sometimes I have to remind them how it feels personal regardless when they ask. It helps to remember that it's slowly becoming more and more normalized.
Maybe she actually would have had children anyway. I mean, why are we thinking that she wouldnt? Just because motherhood alone does not fulfill her? We would never expect fatherhood to fulfill a man so much that he doesn't want a career. We only have this crazy expectation for women.

It’s like a weird ‘nothing changes’ observation because she does care about her kids, she tries to provide in her own way, she worries about them, she just has the same level of physical and emotional presence in their lives as (ironically) a male/father figure. Unheard of in her time, and despite us being in the ‘future’ of 2020s, still looked down on in our time. Because let’s be honest, if genders were flipped people claiming she’s a bad ‘father’ would be minimal.
She’s clearly a woman who would have been childfree if she didn’t follow the life script like it was a shopping list. Boyfriend. Got. Married. Got. Live with husband in same building as parents. Got. Kids. Got. No thought.

I love how half of the commenters say what a terrible mother Midge is, and the other half say that she is an amazing mother. In reality, she is neither. She's not the best mom in the world, nor is she the worst one. This isn't always seen in television and movies, so it's fun to see it here. She does not spend as much time with them as she could because she is focused on her career. Motherhood is not the be-all-end-all of her existence. Every one of those things is true, which is part of what makes her such an interesting character. It seems like media often shows mothers as either the "perfect supermom," or they're totally awful. Most real mothers have both their faults and their strengths. They have their "Great Parenting Moments" while they also have their "Parenting Fails." I believe my own mother was, (and still is,) an absolutely amazing mom. But she was definitely NOT perfect! Midge defies the over-used "fictional mom" stereotypes; she's not supermom, but she's not the worst mom, either.
Isn't that all the relationship with Role reversed in current time for 99% of women. Men out like midge and hearing their kids grow up, but most of them don't feel guilt or shame for not being there as its women job. And women like Joel at home, working, taking care of home, kids, maintaining social retionships and even relationship with their husband. It's just role reversal, in my opinion. When a women is out of house, she is guilt tripped ALOT. while what midge is doing is what expected of men even today and no-one flinches an eye. Think about it. I was a helicopter mom. Always knew where they were. Both adults now living their best life. I think it gets a bad rap because for lazy people it takes too much effort.
Midge reminds me of my mom in all the best ways. Esther is a lucky girl to have such a strong, ambitious woman as her role model in life! I know seeing my mom chase her dreams growing up has helped me feel confident chasing mine ❤
I watched that one yesterday and it reminded me of my own childhood in the 80s😂 I mean as long as it wasn't THAT hot and the window was down my mom just left me sleep.

I do think it was a lost opportunity not to have Midge have to come to grips with Ethan going to public school in Queens, both to tell that story of her personal growth and to set up a sequel series that picks up 10 years later with him in Forest Hills High at the same time as The Ramones.
Astrid is a treasure! I've wanted to be Jewish since I was about eight, so almost 30 years now. Astrid makes me want to take the plunge though I don't think I'd use the Yiddish lingo so freely as she does.
So many people who bash her can't imagine what the 1960's and 19070's were like. My Mother's life, or my Father's lives didn't revolve around me, and I am better for it. I can actually figure things out. Kids today are going to have a hard time in adult life.

When I was a child...children would eat in a different table. I ALWAYS HATED THAT...when my mom and I would be alone in the house, we would eat together but when the family gathered. I always had to go to another place💀

I do think her (and her husbands) parenting style is borderline negelctful from todays perspective, but at the same time did she not have many options in her time in society. And other people took care of them at least. Her being a very nurturing mother would not have been realistic with her character arc.

The show is honest about her choices and her desire to pursue her career over family...and it showed the cost at the end when she's walking in her big spacious mansion...alone...with only her staff to keep her company. She got what she wanted...but in the end was she truly happy?
Honestly, her kids are so rarely mentioned, I’m not sure why they were put in the script at all. There are no scenes of her trying to balance being a mother and a comedian or her talking about how she wouldn’t have had them if it wasn’t expected of her.

Even when I got remarried and had somebody in the house 24/7 to watch my kids, I spent time with them. I grew up in a house with live in help because my mom was I’ll, but she spent time with me, reading to me, watching TV with me, playing cards, etc. Everybody has different parental/child experiences. The dichotomy between Midge leaving the house without a backward glance for her children and Susie’s secretary bringing the kids to work was perfect. See what white privilege can buy? 🤣
The headline saying, midge is real mother! But actually no-one wants that mother/wife in their life. It's the truth though. Women are still ostracized for leaving for work and looked down in business and corporate or even in traveling job for being inadequate women and for not being there for the kids, while men can do it no issues.
That's actually not true. They would've had to be way more wealthy than that to have the Nanny raise the children. A mother's absence back then would have consisted of meeting friends for a luncheon once a month and selling Tupperware on occasion. Mothers have always been very much involved with their children pretty-much since the beginning of time
It's funny how ASP written Midge as an unfit mother, yet Amazon is trying to convince us she is actually the best mother ever. :D Well, no one who has seen the season 5 could possibly think so. Because the quality of parenting is seen in grown up children and their relationships with themselves, parents, outside world, their partners. Esther is a mess, Ethan grown completely away from his mother. Only reason anyone tries to defend her shitty motherhood is because they see themselves or their parents in it. Joel is thousand times better father than Midge is mother. But yes, he is not realistic, she IS - it was very common for women of her class in that era to go do whatever they want to do and let other people take care of their children. The fact she was able to be nice the few times in a week/month she actually interacted with her children, makes her sane, not a great mother. It's very easy to control oneself when you don't have to do it all day, every day. And don't kid yourselves. To be present is one of the most important things in parenthood, especially when the alternative is to give your children to Rose Weissman. :D
How is she a bad mother? She provides for them, she loves them fiercely and they're always well looked after. If she was a man no one would be calling her a bad mother

She's a careless parent. When she's present, she is good, but every time she gets distracted by her dreams the kids are pushed away. The grandparents are potentially more self absorbed and harmful to them and Midge constantly expects her parents to care for the kids. Plus, in spite of any intentions she has with raising them, her careless mothering seems to be evident in the latest season.
I don't feel any nurturing connection with her children whatsoever, in fact her parenting style is downright negligent.She is solely focused on her career.

I couldn't handle the way she acted with her kids. I'm no helicopter mom, and actually have had the police called on me for neglect because I wasn't helicopter-y enough for someone (it was fine, I didn't get in trouble, but now I have a fear of busybodies) But the way she doesn't consider them is shameful. She doesn't think of them as people who need her protection, at all. They're like houseplants to her, not even like pets. I had to stop watching the show for that reason, I was just yelling at the screen the whole time.

She calls everyday to check on them, makes sure they have the best education, etc. If she was a man, no one would be questioning her touring the world for her career. That's actually not true. They would've had to be way more wealthy than that to have the Nanny raise the children. A mother's absence back then would have consisted of meeting friends for a luncheon once a month and selling Tupperware on occasion. Mothers have always been very much involved with their children pretty-much since the beginning of time

It's funny how ASP written Midge as an unfit mother, yet Amazon is trying to convince us she is actually the best mother ever. :D Well, no one who has seen the season 5 could possibly think so. Because the quality of parenting is seen in grown up children and their relationships with themselves, parents, outside world, their partners. Esther is a mess, Ethan grown completely away from his mother.
Only reason anyone tries to defend her shitty motherhood is because they see themselves or their parents in it. Joel is thousand times better father than Midge is mother. But yes, he is not realistic, she IS - it was very common for women of her class in that era to go do whatever they want to do and let other people take care of their children. The fact she was able to be nice the few times in a week/month she actually interacted with her children, makes her sane, not a great mother. It's very easy to control oneself when you don't have to do it all day, every day. And don't kid yourselves. To be present is one of the most important things in parenthood, especially when the alternative is to give your children to Rose Weissman. :D

@@alinamartin7715 Her children have never complained about her not being around. Esther's too young to care, and Ethan is always happy to talk on the phone to his mother and ramble about his day to her. He never once says, "Mommy, why are you never here?"
She's a careless parent. When she's present, she is good, but every time she gets distracted by her dreams the kids are pushed away. The grandparents are potentially more self absorbed and harmful to them and Midge constantly expects her parents to care for the kids. Plus, in spite of any intentions she has with raising them, her careless mothering seems to be evident in the latest season.
I don't feel any nurturing connection with her children whatsoever, in fact her parenting style is downright negligent.She is solely focused on her career.

Midge was not the best mom. I'm glad they showed the older Ester in a flashback. She was her grandpa and did not like her mom. And Ethan...didn't like her and she humiliated him. I always wondered where were the kids?

is it only me? I feel she is a bad mother, and her lack of attention ruined her sons life, and made her otherwise intelligent daughter go to therapy
I couldn't handle the way she acted with her kids. I'm no helicopter mom, and actually have had the police called on me for neglect because I wasn't helicopter-y enough for someone (it was fine, I didn't get in trouble, but now I have a fear of busybodies)
But the way she doesn't consider them is shameful. She doesn't think of them as people who need her protection, at all. They're like houseplants to her, not even like pets. I had to stop watching the show for that reason, I was just yelling at the screen the whole time.
I'm sorry but No🙄 I love Midge n all but if this were real life, she wouldn't be first in line for mother-of-the-year. At the very least, a good mom doesn't choose their career of debauchery over seeing their own children everyday Lol

That's such bullshit. First of all, parenting was vastly different in the 50s. You can't judge her parenting with modern day standards. Secondly, she is absolutely allowed to choose her career over seeing her children everyday. They have a father, two sets of grandparents and a friend circle. She knows they're in good hands. She calls everyday to check on them, makes sure they have the best education, etc. If she was a man, no one would be questioning her touring the world for her career. Men do it literally all the time.
