The X-Wing is definitely not for beginner pilots. You have to be very gentle on the throttle or it will nose up too much. And you need big slow wide turns. I will be releasing my review and flight video soon, and I had the thing flying for pretty much the entire battery duration, and it's actually quite awesome when you get the hang of it. :)

What about creating plans for an foam x-wing made from scratch? Something like 4 ducted fan motors, fireworks guns, and no need for the stabilizer wing. Vertical thrust vectoring on the top motors, horizontal thrust vectoring on the bottom motors and elevons on the wings.

Yep, I have the Habu as well. Compared to those two gems this Xwing is rather disappointing and I'd love to see on on the same level as our hobby grade UMX jets.
+Low Elevation RC haha yeah! My first R/C plane was an Air Hogs A-10 and I was so disappointed. Lol I was like 8, but I was still angry. I just started flying hobby grade planes about 2 years ago and and just now getting into mini quads! I love this stuff! And although these may not fly the best, the do give a beginner a sense of how things work (although I would not recommend buying one) and it's a fun "toy".

curiosity, these MIGHT fly better swapping in bull nose 2 blade props meant for a little brushed quad. for flying looks, drinking straws for "guns" could be cool, slit to fit the wing tips and a tiny spot of tape. they'd get mashed a bit with landings and crashes but shouldn't hurt anything.

You wanted some modification suggestions... The model has 4 rocket engines, but just 2 motors. Could you install a quad copter gyro and motor controls to the X-wing, along with 4 ducted fans?. Mount the gyro so that in stead of trying to keep the engines in a horizontal plane, it will try to keep the engines vertical.(or whatever slight upward angle the nose needs to be for it to stay in the air) Then with differential thrust you could have full yaw, roll and tilt controls and with whatever lift you get from the canard and the wings, you could keep the thing afloat.
I think the x-wing is over-weight and under-powered right out of the box. to make it fly great a little modification is key. after cutting off the top half of the faux nacells to reduce weight and cutting in some flaps in the canards and bending them so as to catch more wind and help keep the nose down since they tend to be tail-heavy anyway, it flies pretty great. but, after a few hard landing I tore off one canard so, I just took the other off and replaced them with small cut-out wings from thin foam board. to attach those I used two toothpicks shoved into the wings and into the fuselage that somewhat mirrored the original canards. you can also adjust your trim by carefully bending the new wings till you have it flying straighter. that little mod makes all the difference and makes it fun as hell to fly now.
I got myself an X-Wing and it was a little tail heavy, but my solution was that when it starts stalling some then I pull the throttle down and it will kinda stabilize a little and then when you want to turn you have to pull the throttle down and turn the direction you want to go, because when you turn without pulling the throttle down the opposite side of the side you are trying to turn will still have somewhat equal thrust to the side you are turning.
I had an Estes X Wing rocket back in the day. It was made of plastic for 90% of it. Epic slow lift offs. The laser guns almost always broke off when landing.
I've had the Havok. It flies quite well, but the SLIGHTEST breeze will knock it all over the place. One night with completely still air(rare event) I flew it outside and it did extremely well and stable. Even flew it up around power lines without a problem. And it would get to a really good altitude. One time I had the opportunity to fly it in a unventilated warehouse and it was a no brainer for even inexperienced pilots who had never flown anything before to fly it easily. But, indoors just the normal air currents from air conditioning or heaters will drive it insane.
Could you add additional power to the upper engines to make it an actual quad powered ship instead of just the lower two? Also, would drinking straws and coffee stirrers work as gun replacements?

I'd like to issue a challenge to the Flitetest crew to build a larger foam board version of this using 4 motors and differential thrust to control. Make it so it can be flown with the guns, too. Also, major bonus points if you eliminate the kinards, super major bonus points if you can engineer it to fly with the wings shut and in the X formation!
Back in the June 1984 issue of Model Airplane News there was an article/review of an X-wing RC plane (X-1 X-Wing) that was sold only as plans. It was 40" long, 36" wing span and was originally designed for a .25 - .36 gas pusher (Big enough that an actual R2-D2 figure could be used). My apologies for my forgetful wordage. It would be awesome if you modified it to have blades in the top ducts and the control fins on the wings allowing you to remove the canard, and possibly put the guns back on.
4x bl, mini canards on gun muzzles, pitch assist or standard on differential upper and lower pods. any number of control boards to make it easier. will probably need leading/trailing edge bracing by this point. cf or BBQ skewers should work depending on wing thickness.
could you guys maybe make an X-wing from foam board,model it after another Cannarded plan, and a few modified EDFs, have the CG on the wings like a normal plane, ect.

Aerodynamic tip: Either get stronger engines or lighten up the aircraft. Also, have you ever also heard of CoG for aircraft. It's called Center of Gravity.

I have had my millennium falcon for over five years since it first came outand I've cresh in the walls I played catch with it with my son or another Quad it is by far the toughest badass RC quadcopter out there
That's about what I expected from the X-wing. The millennium falcon is decent enough. I did a video review on it recently and it's pretty fun, but expensive.
turn all four mock engines into EDF's, remove the wings and add your own in the long range 'flat' config rather than the 'x' shaped battle configuration, add some sort of control surface to the wings.

Got the X-wing on sale a few months back. Save yourself the time/money and avoid AirHog products altogether.
re-visit this video. you just might be able to adapt a toy quad into the shell and make your X-wing a little badass. I popped the ideas/details in another reply how it just might work.

My apologies for my forgetful wordage. It would be awesome if you modified it to have blades in the top ducts and the control fins on the wings allowing you to remove the canard, and possibly put the guns back on.
For the price these sell for, they fly poorly. Air Hogs could have made a better effort. Let Syma or wltoys have a go, they will do better.

Yes, modify them to be capable of combat...
4x bl, mini canards on gun muzzles, pitch assist or standard on differential upper and lower pods. any number of control boards to make it easier. will probably need leading/trailing edge bracing by this point. cf or BBQ skewers should work depending on wing thickness.

could you guys maybe make an X-wing from foam board,model it after another Cannarded plan, and a few modified EDFs, have the CG on the wings like a normal plane, ect.

Aerodynamic tip: Either get stronger engines or lighten up the aircraft. Also, have you ever also heard of CoG for aircraft. It's called Center of Gravity.

and V-tol capabilities.

I have had my millennium falcon for over five years since it first came outand I've cresh in the walls I played catch with it with my son or another Quad it is by far the toughest badass RC quadcopter out there
That's about what I expected from the X-wing. The millennium falcon is decent enough. I did a video review on it recently and it's pretty fun, but expensive.

turn all four mock engines into EDF's, remove the wings and add your own in the long range 'flat' config rather than the 'x' shaped battle configuration, add some sort of control surface to the wings.
It's always the camera man. I once tossed a boomerang while I was filmed (for TV!!) and when it came back, it landed in the cameramans neck.
