I had an Iguana now for 15 years and my number one recommendation for the poop problem is: Get them a big water basin that you still can carry. They really like to poop into water. After they did it, pick it up, put it in the toilet and refill.

Actually you can housetrain an iguana. I had one in my youth and she was taught that she can't come out of terrarium unless "business" has been done. Just point the place in terrarium floor and opening the doors and letting her out when it's done. ^^
She learned quite fast that that was the toilet. Never pooped in the apartment. Just like a cat, went back to terrarium to poop.

I had Iguanas growing up. They pee/pooped the same time every day. I wouldn't let them out of their cage until after they did. They figured this out and became paper trained. They'd bang on the side of the cage to let me know. Eventually, they simply lived in my bedroom and would climb back into their cage to mess. Took a while but I yard trained them in a similar way.

I papertrained my 2 iguanas. Like puppies let out in papered corner. Keep it there till they go. Do it every day after they eat. They would head to paper all by them selves in a short time !!!!

I had one for 14 years and loved this guy but it's a commitment. When he was still young and I was in high school I've been asked more than I can count whether I cut myself with razor blades. My forearms were scarred all over I still have some thin marks even though it was almost 15 years ago. Bite to the hand took it out of commission for a month and had one emergency visit to the hospital after he bit my leg so hard, muscles came out and I had to be stiched. But that was expected. The poop and pee was not. It is incredible how much they do that and how much of it there is. Mine figured a way to open up his enclosure came out shat all over the room, smeared it on the walls and my bed more than once.
Do yourself a favor and get smaller monitor lizard or a bearded dragon.

Everyone has backlash on iguanas and stuff. I do agree, people don't treat them right, but they aren't outright terrible. They just require extensive care, and if you can actually care for your lizard they can be very good pets. I may be a bit biased as my first pet reptile a few years ago was an iguana, and now he's doing perfectly fine. If you have the money, they can be great.

I have always wanted to own an iguana but never did because of my parents.
I recently bought a house and I told my wife that I’m gonna get an iguana whether you like it or not haha. However knowing that these dinosaurs can get pretty big. I do have a question of the size of the cage. If I were to buy one, would it be bad if I started him or her off with a big cage? Rather than doing the small aquarium?
You did mention about heat. I live about an hour outside of Chicago IL and it could get pretty cold up here. Would I have to add extra heating sources during the winter?

This guy is cool. I just want to add that I've found they do better if they have the run of the house, or at least a room, as opposed to a cage or tank. Also they require direct sunlight for that vitamin D that the gentleman spoke of. You put them in a spot where the sun shines in, and they will just spred out and bask. When they're through they will walk into a shaded area. They love to have their belly rubbed, and are extremely intelligent...

I am buying an Iguana in a few days. I have 10 years of reptile experience. I will not need an enclosure because my baby is gonna be a free roamer. My husband has 2 bearded dragons that have never seen a cage in their lives. (Well maybe when they were tiny babies) so yeah my new iguana is gonna be a free roamer!!! I can't wait to get him..... I'm getting a male too...

No, sadly enough I basically rescued her from from a local reptile show that came to town, the people had her in a tub and you could see all of her bones. We had to syringe feed her for a couple weeks and then find out what she would eat since they were only feeding her crickets. She’s a punk but we still love her

Handle it as much as possible with confidence. Make sure it’s enclosure is where it can always see you when you’re walking around the house as well. They are tough as many say they might not ever get comfortable. Mine is a punk lol. But after a few mins she calms down. I just did a video on gloves that seem to help not only your arms from getting tore up but makes them feel more comfortable because they can grip it better. Those gloves link are in the description.

They take a special person lol. I would just do a lot of research. And watch a lot of guys that have them. Just expect a large powerful butthead. And if you’re lucky they might be ok. I love them but they’re not for everyone.
