That's the amazing Joe Osborn on bass. This whole clip is cool, but we get to see Joe lay down that awesome bass starting at 3:34. th-cam.com/video/AwOY0mNG9Nw/w-d-xo.html
The gentleman singing lead in the second song of this 2-song medley from the musical _Hair,_ is Billy Davis Jr. He and the lovely lady in the mostly-yellow blouse, the incomparable Marilyn McCoo, were married in 1969 (a fact that hit me hard in the 70s, when I was a teen with a bit of a crush on Miss McCoo -- Mr Davis definitely 'married up' - lol). Their Number 1 hit 'You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)' would be a great song to react to. They became the first African American married couple to host a network television series, The Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. Show, on CBS in summer 1977, and are about to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.
I love The 5th Dimension. Hopefully the younger generations discover them. The Age of Aquarius is just getting underway and it’ll be several decades for the transition away from the Age of Pieces.
This song bookended Hair, with Aquarius as the opening number and Let The Sunshine In closing the film. You're in for a real treat whenever you get around to watching this movie - I'm sure you'll love it. As musicals go, it's actually pretty epic, both story-wise and musically (tons of other excellent and now-classic tunes throughout). A side note on this signature line from the song: _When the Moon is in the seventh house_ _And Jupiter aligns with Mars_ _Then peace will guide the planets_ _and love will steer the stars_ This actually makes sense in terms of astrological symbolism (setting aside whether astrology is actually valid): the Moon is associated with emotions, the seventh house concerns relationships, Jupiter is associated with idealism and generosity, and Mars with action. Whether or not these alignments portend the kind of peace and love suggested in the lyrics, they'll usually be given a pretty positive interpretation overall.
The 5D : Marilyn McCoo , the gorgeous lead vocal ---------her husband, Billy DAvis jr on 2nd lead ------------Florence LaRue --------------Ron Townson , the booming voiced tenor ------& Lamonte Maclemore on bass---------------song hit #1 in the summer of '69.
Yes, this (really two songs) was from the 1967 musical "Hair," which was made into a movie in the seventies. This song combined two songs from the musical and was released in 1969 and it was a huge hit, becoming emblematic of just the era you pinpointed.
Billy Davis Jr. doing the soulful singing, he is married to Marilyn McCoo the beautiful lady who sang " One less Bell to answer " they have been married for over 50 years and are still performing today ❤️❤️
Fun fact : Billy davis jr. misplaced his wallet in nyc . The guy that found it was one of the producers of Hair . He called Billy , told him about his wallet. He invited them backstage after the play . Billy asked him if the 5th dimension could sing those songs . And the rest , they say , is history .
@@joannerichards1750 It is JoAnne . I watched an interview with them recently in which they talked about it . They wrote an autobiography a few years ago .
The guy singing solo was Marylin McCoo's husband Billy Davis Jr. The 5th Dimension was huge in their day. There are some songs that turn a new chapter when they come out. This was one of them. No one had ever heard anything like it before. It set a whole new tone. If you listen to Jesus Christ Superstar, which came out much later, you will hear echos of this sound.
All I can say is "What a lovely girl". It's a beautiful thing to see someone's "spirit" in full flight, on full display -uninhibited! THE WORLD COULD USE MORE OF THAT ANGELA 🙏🏻👍👍👍👍👍
I was commissioned many decades ago by Marilyn McCoo to do a needle point designed...just wanted you and your fans to know, Marilyn was a very sweet and genuine person in real life...always nice to know she was and I'm sure still is compared to many other celebrities, as beautiful inside in addition to the outside...love your music evaluations!!
I remember as a kid the summer of 69 being kind of spooky, wild and mysterious with the Manson murders, the "moon landing" ,woodstock and other wild urban myths going on that summer and this song encapsulated it all perfectly..It made us feel like something good was trying to break thru..
The 5th Dimension wowed the mainstream with opulent harmonies and made every song they covered pure giddy joy. "Aquarius" rode the wavy-gravy exposition, capturing the hippie counterculture through music.
I was in 6th grade then. Our elementary school teachers took us across the way to our Junior HS at auditorium a few hundred yards away to listen to this. Hundreds of helium balloons and decorations. Afterwards, they gave each of us (hundreds) a balloon to walk outside singing while we released them to the sky and up to Aquarius. Yeah, it was a different time, and wonderful in such ways.
I just love this song. They were an outstanding group of singers. Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo are still married to each other. They had a successful solo career.
Now go back and listen to it again all by yourself and " feel it." Once you let yourself feel it, you got it. But there's nothing like dancing when no one is watching.
The soloist is Billy Davis Jr, he is the husband of the taller female singer(Marilyn McCoo), they later had a song, “You Don’t Have To Be A Star”! The song is from the movie Hair!
As a lot of folks have mentioned the bass-line. Probably performed by Carol Kaye as part of „The Wrecking Crew“. She was the only female player on the crew. However there were several bass players. Their song “One Less Bell to Answer” has always been my favorite and really worth a listen. There’s a video of the group performing that live on “Soul Train” …..brings back great memories. Cheers
This song is another example of great music from the 60's. It spent in 1969 6 weeks at the top of the charts. The 2 songs were written in 1967 for the musical HAIR. The group has had hit after hit with songs like ONE LESS BELL TO ANSWER, WEDDING BELL BLUES and STONED SOUL PICNIC.
Watch this lovely young woman's face light up at 1:10, and then she really gets into the anthem of my youth. I just love to see young people discovering this material.
Superb vocal harmonies with Billy Davis Jr leading the chorus. I love the wardrobe. Overall the vibe of the song gives me goosebumps. They dont make music like this anymore.
A fantastic group of talented singers. Marilyn McCoo singing lead in Aquarius has a gorgeous voice. Billy Davis singing in Let the Sun Shine In, married Marilyn in the 70s. (Search for Marilyn's "One Less Bell to Answer" and "Marry Me, Bill".) Watching you move to this music, I know we could dance to this one together, even though I'm closing in on 70 now.
This is one of my all-time favorite pick-me-up songs. Yes it's all sunshine and Good Vibes, but Billy keeps it real in the second song talking about feeling mistreated and being lonely. Music is therapy ❤
Billy Davis jr, the lead singer of the last half of this song left his wallet in a NYC taxi in 1968, and the next man in the cab, who found it, worked on the Broadway show HAIR and invited them to see the show so he could return the wallet. Then The 5th Dimension all loved the opening song, Age Of Aquarius and wanted to record it. But their producer saw it was only half a song and came up with the idea of combining it with the closing number of the show Let The Sun Shine In.
This is a classic! This tune was either in the play Hair or Jesus Christ Superstar! They have a lot of great hits! This late 1960's, early 1970's vibe is pretty groovy and far out! The male singer named Billy Davis JR reminds me a little of James Brown! He and Marilyn Mc Coo, the tall lady have been married for over 50 years! That's incredible!
Aquarius & Let The Sunshine In were 2 separate songs, written by Galt MacDermot (music), & Gerome Ragni & James Rado (lyrics), for the play, Hair, which opened 1967 (they also wrote the play). 5th Dimension released this combo of the songs March 1969. 1979, Hair was made into a movie.
The singer is Billy Davis Jr. His background is Gospel. They found out about this song Because Billy lost his wallet in a cab and the man who returned it to him was the producer of the play Broadway musical Hair! When the group came and saw the musical they fell in love with the song Aquarius! When they approached their producer to do the song he felt that it was not appropriate enough because it was really just an introduction song which is what it is in the musical. So he came up with the idea of adding "let the sunshine in" which is at the end of the musical to make it a two-part medley!! So when the group all started singing let the sunshine in the producer turns to Billy Davis and says "okay take us to church!" Billy looked at him and said "What?" And the producer said "just do that gospel thing that you do" and the rest is history!! I'll say Billy Davis definitely took us to church at the end of that one!!!
The lead singer there was Billy Davis Jr, and his wife Marilyn McCoo. I knew them when I was a kid. She was the classiest lady you'd ever want to meet.
Wow I think I was 9 years old when this song came out but I fell in love with Marilyn McCoo boy did I crush on her lol Till this day I think she is stunning. Let the Sunshine In is really only the ending part of the song Flesh Failures from the musical... the original Broadway cast recording of it is really a pretty good song
I'll always remember playing this in the car, and my conservative father talking about to going to see Hair the musical in the 70s and enjoying it quite a bit.
Whenever I hear Let the sunshine in all I wanna do is like in the movie, go outside, start running while singing my heart out and just feeling good.....
Great song! Billy Davis had such a distinctive voice. Angela, here is another great bit of trivia for you - Billy Davis and his wife Marilyn McCoo [now enjoying their 52nd year of marriage] were a duo musically, as well. Their "You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)" is a song you would enjoy checking out. Great reaction, as usual - really like you with your hair wavy.
Marvelous, Angela! Thanks for reacting to this super pop-rock vocal group from the ever-lovin' 1960's. My first intro to the 5th Dimension was "Up, Up and Away." They scored multiple airplay hits, some were composed by the young composer Laura Nyro (Stone Soul Picnic, Blowin' Away, etc.). Billy Davis (Otis Redding voice) and Marylin McCoo (tall, wavy-hair burnette) eventually married, still are today. Hear "Wedding Bell Blues" (also Laura Nyro).
