This was a wonderful memory for me, my best friend and neighbor introduced me to her first Elton John album. It was Christmas morning we both sat on the floor of her bedroom and she played the album on her record player I was 12. It was the most incredible thing I heard, his vocals were like magic. We both loved his voice. I discovered rock music and life was never the same. Elton John gave me music that got me into other styles and other bands into my teenage years throughout my adult life. I saw Almost Famous on HBO as an adult in 2001. Directed by the genius Cameron Crowe. I really really believe you’ll like this movie. I adored Almost Famous. You’re gonna need Kleenex. "Epic" That's what we thought about it when it came out and with nearly every song he's been associated with. I'm sure you've heard of people climbing the mountain to stardom. Elton is one of the giants in music that can step over that mountain many have struggled to climb.

I could be wrong on some of the details -- but I believe Bernie Taupin penned the lyrics for this song during Elton John's first visit to the USA wherein Taupin met and eventually married Maxine Feibelman. As I have heard, the band had a double-decker bus set up like a big RV with little bedrooms and so on, and sometimes they rode in it between tour stops. So "seamstress for the band; you married a music man,." "Count the headlights on the highway" was a way to fall alseep; "you had a busy day today." Also "lookin' on she sings the song," etc., during the shows. We also get images of Los Angeles with preachers on the boulevard, dancing in the (beach) sand, etc. I understand Elton John's starting point for the tour was there.
To really appreciate this song you have to breathe in the scene on the bus from the movie “Almost Famous”. That movie really captures the spirit of the music of that time (this song and more). That scene, and the entire movie, will make you cry happy and sad tears - all at the same time. So many memories of my childhood and adolescent years are wrapped up in this song. I hope you get a chance to check out the movie. It is definitely worth the watch…

Another Tribute to My Mom who passed away young! She was a professional dancer with June Taylor Dancers who were on the Jackie Gleason Show. My dad a drummer. Heavenly Childhood! Elton John sent a Phone Wire of Condolences (Not to brag... just an amazing SEASON of Life for me) Her friend was Duke Ellington daughter.. My mom was an Angel on Earth and anyone who worked with her holds her in their heart. I was a preteen. Had NO CLUE these names of people she would talk on phone or work with were actually famous. Some newly famous and some old school. My dad made me think (in my mind) everyone sees STARS. lol Too Cool. You bring memories so tucked in my heart TEARS OF JOY finally release Sorrow. This SONG is an example of how Angels are on Earth to me. Who knew I'd ever share such intimate memories so publicly. I first fell in love with Tiny Dancer back in the seventies, and I still listened to it at least once a week. I hope when I am on my deathbed, I will be able to shout out to some to put "Tiny Dancer" on for me, so I can hear it one last time.
When you said road trip song it came to mind that this song is included in a road-trip scene in the Cameron Crow film "Almost Famous". A wonderful music movie / comedy / love story that I highly highly recommend watching if you're not familiar with it yet. Sooo so good! (+ lots of good tunes from the 70's)
Elton not only sounded good in the studio, but I saw him in concert 5 times,,, Ever the performer, it was a fun time. The best of all was his Single Person tour in Russia. I was fortunate to be in Russia for work in 1979, and Elton along with Percussionist Ray Cooper put on a show for the ages, Just the two of them... No other musicians.
I always thought it would be fun as hell to play in this band. How cool would it have been to be part of such amazing compositions? You could almost see these guys gushing in pure joy because they knew they were part of something special.

When I look back at my life, this song, amongst ALL the songs ever made is the song that I have heard the most often. From the radio, records, tapes, cd's, satellite, this song always seems to come on. U described it as Epic and that it certainly is, both musically, lyrically and to me its Epic from the impact it has had on my life and it's importance in music history. Its so perfect that it defies genres and is timeless. It fits into any age. I just wished that u had watched the video version but this is one of my favorite reactions from u. I love how he does 9 verses before he gets to the first chorus. They each build slightly in intensity. Early Elton songs were not predictable, he just wrote to Bernie's lyrics which were written more like poetry back then.

Elton and Bernie Taupin are a combination probably only second to Lennon and McCartney, their lyrics and musical arrangements are beautiful, have a listen to Rocket Man, Philadephia Freedom or Benny And The Jets

I don't know for sure but ever since I first heard this song on Top 40 radio, I could imagine that Bernie Taupin penned the lyrics during Elton John's band's first tour in America ("L.A. Lady") and his wife accompanied them on their occasional "decked-out tour bus" rides. Tiny Dancer ("in my hand") metaphorically suggests his feeling secure with her love for him. She and Bernie likely had their own sleeping quarters somewhere in the rear of one bus ("lay me down in sheets of linen"). They'd lay in bed together during a night run ("you had a busy day today") and "count the headlights on the highway" in the opposite direction, as a means to get to sleep. She'd fall asleep first and he'd look at her next to him -- which is where "... and you can't hear me when I say softly, slowly ..." fits in the picture. Elton John provides further eloquence with his masterful composition of the music.
Some of the songs on that album are pretty critical of the record industry. I've been listening to this song since it was released and it never gets tired. Also, some of the piano parts reminded me of another Elton song, Burn Down The Mission off the Tumbleweed Connection album.
I could not recommend "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" or "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John! You cannot go wrong with any music from his catalog.
Great reaction! Epic song....but Elton's first 8 albums are completely epic....about 80 songs worth just as good as this. Composition, production, arrangements, talent of the musicianship of all the people on every track....the background harmonies (perfection ) ...and Elton's totally unique voice and singing talents. You should start going through his albums here starting with "Elton John" his first or second album with the dark cover and him in shadow a bit wearing thick old glasses. Start there and go through them all. A musical adventure for sure.

It’s a pedal steel guitar. Played by session man B.J. Cole. He was the premier steel guitarist in the UK in the ‘70s. Every recording session with a steel guitar part made in Britain hired him for more than a decade.
Saw Elton John live several times in the early 1980's in NYC/Madison Sq. Garden. He opened both shows with this great song. His influence on the 1970's was enormous.

When you have a producer and arranger working so well together, this is the resulting magic. The country sounding instrument you were trying to name is the pedal steel guitar. The Doobie Brothers “South City Midnight Lady” features Jeff “Skunk” Baxter working his talents on one. A simply beautiful sound on a achingly pretty song. Thanks for the wonderful reaction!

"A steel guitar is any guitar played while moving a steel bar or similar hard object against plucked strings."
Country music will often have what is called the pedal steel, and all kinds of blues players will just play it on whatever type of electric guitar they are using.
Other names: Hawaiian guitar, lap steel, pedal steel, console steel, kīkākila, Dobro

Elton and Bernie Taupin are a combination probably only second to Lennon and McCartney, their lyrics and musical arrangements are beautiful, have a listen to Rocket Man, Philadephia Freedom or Benny And The Jets

Very astute comment on how magnificently the song is "assembled." It was very well produced. And you're right, it is a road song. Some other songs that are extremely well produced include Year of the Cat and Time Passages by Al Stewart. Check them out sometime. You are very good at this. Thanks.
I don't know for sure but ever since I first heard this song on Top 40 radio, I could imagine that Bernie Taupin penned the lyrics during Elton John's band's first tour in America ("L.A. Lady") and his wife accompanied them on their occasional "decked-out tour bus" rides. Tiny Dancer ("in my hand") metaphorically suggests his feeling secure with her love for him.
She and Bernie likely had their own sleeping quarters somewhere in the rear of one bus ("lay me down in sheets of linen"). They'd lay in bed together during a night run ("you had a busy day today") and "count the headlights on the highway" in the opposite direction, as a means to get to sleep.
She'd fall asleep first and he'd look at her next to him -- which is where "... and you can't hear me when I say softly, slowly ..." fits in the picture. Elton John provides further eloquence with his masterful composition of the music.

I've been listening to this song since it was released and it never gets tired. Also, some of the piano parts reminded me of another Elton song, Burn Down The Mission off the Tumbleweed Connection album.
I could not recommend "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" or "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John! You cannot go wrong with any music from his catalog.

Great reaction! Epic song....but Elton's first 8 albums are completely epic....about 80 songs worth just as good as this. Composition, production, arrangements, talent of the musicianship of all the people on every track....the background harmonies (perfection ) ...and Elton's totally unique voice and singing talents. You should start going through his albums here starting with "Elton John" his first or second album with the dark cover and him in shadow a bit wearing thick old glasses. Start there and go through them all. A musical adventure for sure.

It’s a pedal steel guitar. Played by session man B.J. Cole. He was the premier steel guitarist in the UK in the ‘70s. Every recording session with a steel guitar part made in Britain hired him for more than a decade.
Saw Elton John live several times in the early 1980's in NYC/Madison Sq. Garden. He opened both shows with this great song. His influence on the 1970's was enormous.
