    Mustie1,
I had a red 1971 Super Beetle in the early 1980s that I bought from a co-worker (I learned to drive a stick with this car). I lived in Lowell at the time and was driving back from visiting family in NY when the 1600 swallowed a valve in CT. The guy I bought it from helped me drag it home and let me rebuild it in his barn in Hollis (he was areally NICE guy). I rebuilt the engine (rebuilt heads, new pistons, cylinders, etc) and it ran great.
    God bless
    Paul

When you were jacking it up, it reminded me of many many years ago, a friend bought a beetle, asked me to show him how to change a wheel as he'd got a puncture.
He put the jack under ...& he started turning the handle as i watched ready to take the wheel off...
But it didn't move...& the jack was at its max height...
However the passenger seat was around 8 inches higher than it was.......

I know what your saying! I have what they call "Trigger Finger" in both thumbs. ( I know, should call it trigger thumbs) I have no way to grip anything anymore... Can't pick up a glass or even tare open a bandaid wrapper (I use scissors). I had to replace all my door knobs from the round ones to the ones with the levers. Can't grip the door knob to turn the things... :-(
What really sucks is when they (the thumbs) lock closed!...... I have these hard plastic glove type thing that lets me use my fingers but holds my thumbs stationary so they won't move or bend.... Retirement is a blast...

What a resurrection feat! Can't beat those old VW bugs. I once floated one in a flash flood. A wall of water came out of nowhere and washed me into the middle of an intersection, bobbing around like a rubber duck. A guy nearby saw my predicament, swam out and towed me to dry land. Turned the key and it started right up. The only casualties were the "cocoa mats,'' which smelled like moldy carpet, and the two tailpipes that rusted out. So yes, they did float.

  • @AlfredHawthornBennyHill

I have loved Beetles since I was a kid in Chicago. In the early 80s was when I fell in love. I used to like all of them though I knew very little. Two stand out very vivdly though. One was a 1975 because of the odd rims they had for that year model and also because this one was orange. A neighbor a block over from our house, owned it and it had a bad engine and it sounded bad, it was loud too. The engine eventually caught fire and was never fixed. The other was a 1973 yellow one that my father had for a very short time. The axle was locked up and it was never fixed either. As I got older I learned more about them and I finally got to drive one a few times which made me so happy. I've always loved the sound of those engines running right with the distinct chirping sound that when I was a kid, didn't know it was the muffler making that sound. The only ones I grew to not like is the Super Beetle and the 1973 and up regular Beetle or as I now call them the fat Beetle which are the less desirable ones. I had hoped to own one by now, but I haven't been so lucky because of how RIDICULOUSLY expensive the good ones are and how bad of condition or how much work I can't afford to do, the cheap ones are. I don't know how to do major work on cars, I don't have the patience or the back or hands for it. I'm glad to see some saved and fixed, but I also get so upset a lot of the time when I see someone who owns a ton of them and or who gives them away to other people when fixed or whatever, because I've worked so hard at trying to get one and never being able to. You are SO LUCKY to have them and I really wish I was you or the other fortunate ones to own all of them. I also always wanted a Fastback and Squareback too. Before I die I really hope to have all 3. I really want anyBeetle between 62 and 66 that can be a daily driver. I don't care what the paint looks like as long as it runs, drives and is reliable. Too bad I can't do a fund raiser to get one or be lucky enough to be given one. Oh well. Thanks for all your Beetle and other VW videos. I will also say this too, it is because of watching your videos I NOW know what the engine sounds like when it has no spark or compression and there is a difference in the sound when turning it over. Also what it sounds like when valves are sticking or knocking and when some of the cylinders aren't running. And the difference between a Bus and a Beetle engine, which I never knew were different.
