We Sailed The Cheapest Cruise in America We Could Find. Here's What Surprised Us...

  • What does a $158 cruise fare get you?
At the start of the year, we searched for the cheapest cruises in America from a major cruise line for all of 2020. The result? This sailing aboard the MSC Divina that departed January 28 for a 3-day cruise from Miami to Freeport and Ocean Cay.
All told, the cruise fare was just $158 to sail solo (would have been $109 per person if sailing with two people). With government fees and taxes, we paid a total of $303, plus $12.50 per day in service charges.
So what did we get for our money? Check out our thoughts on the trip.
Note: We are not affiliated with MSC Cruises. All thoughts and opinions in this video are our own.
*At the time of booking (January 10, 2020), this cruise was the least expensive sailing we could find for 2020 (including the cruise fare, taxes, and fees) among major cruise lines leaving a U.S. port of call. Search was conducted over several days in early January for a solo passenger. Major cruise lines include MSC, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, and similar lines.

Can't compare with other cruise lines but i tell you this...
As a belgian i've experienced MSC two times at the mediteranean and don't have a single complain. I will surtainly join them a 3th time after covid 19. I mean... they offer everything you need. Your time on board can either go to fitness, pools, gymnastics and aerobics in the morning dancing lessons, 20h a day to eat and drink from polenta and pizza with soda drinks or beer or cocktails to buffets and restaurants for lunch and fine dining. In between there's also burgers, hot dogs and pizza's. They offer guided excursions and at the reception desk there's always someone available to help you. I remember once, the room whas cleaned 2 times in 1 day. The entertainement team in the afternoon where always busy doing something and after diner, the shows they prepare, are filled with comedy. All the time there's someone cleaning and that is before covid 19 outbreak.

I paid a total with port fees and taxes of 197 dollars!!! Anyway I disagree with you on Freeport, it was a really cool port and the people were amazing and their was a lot to do and next time you get off their check out the huge stretches of uninhabited beaches near the sea turtle nesting areas and you will be blown away!!! Of course I rented a car in Freeport otherwise I would be stuck going to the terrible little cruise line sponsored area where you get off or going to port Lucaya marketplace and doing nothing else. MSC also has an amazing singles program where they put you together with other single travelers at the same dining room table and you end up meeting some really cool people! Unfortunately MSC hasn’t embraced my time dining yet for all. Last words are is that MSC has amazing ships, Amazing Value and rivals any other cruise line out there in every way!

To keep status you have to cruise again on them within a certain amount of time. Doesn’t seem like a problem, since they are inexpensive. Hopefully, the cruise industry survives C19.

We have sailed on MSC twice and like them a lot, there are something that they need to fix, but like you said an A- for me, we have sailed on HAL, Carnival, NCL, and Costa and if I were to follow people's reviews I would have never sailed on MSC, Carnival or Costa, the reviews from Costa and MSC said that food was horrible and mostly pasta, not so, and the entertainment was opera and more opera, not truth either, we ended our last and first cruise on Costa and we were pleasantly surprised we got upgraded fro free from inside cabin to a very spacious Balcony state room, we are close to Platinum on NCL and Carnival, they have never upgraded us, we leave on our 21 days from Fort Lauderdale to Europe on March 5th, BTW during black Friday they had a 5 days for $79.00 and 7 days for $109 interior rooms. Glad you enjoyed your trip and happy sailing my friend.

pool is either going to be empty or green water when you board because it's using the water that the ship is currently in, and it is constantly being filtered out and back in. carnival cruise has empty pools on boarding day, and it doesn't get filled until the first day at sea.
