Floyd Keim III Thanks for being open minded. :) You're right, it's a whole lot of fun. One of the best things I've done in my life so far, it's pretty awesome and you get to meet a lot of great people.
They have LARP groups all around the place but over in europe is where they get very hardcore about it. I play at a local kingdom in southern texas. Try looking around for groups near you, they have several kingdoms all over the U.S. and europe that I know of and its not hard to get into it once you join up
That pike charge was painful. Only the front-line would lower their pikes, and if you watch the video, you can see why. The second line are essentially ensuring their line breaks at best, and stabbing their men in the arms and back at worst.
paranoidude If we'd perform every maneuver correctly, we'd own the battlefield... as we still "play" and not "reenact" we like to give the other players some chances and many great moments... believe me, we know how to maneuver on the field in high precission, so our formation of pole-weapons isn't easy to break...
Hi Trent Collin, yes, the cannons and the hand-guns shoot foam-balls (balls for cats to play with ;-) so you have a true "effect" of the fire... the muskets just do a "bang" and the enemy can choose the reaction... if you see that a musket is fired at you, it's fair-play to act the effect... especially if the musket is fired from a near distance.
This may be an old video but damn did that look fun. I do love to think that those Romans were like, "Erm, Centurion? How in Jupiter's name did we get here?" as they marched toward those later period pikemen :P
Well, the story behind that is some kind of time-travelling... the different time-periods send their best fighters (or not so good ones, too ;-)) in order to have a fight for dominance. There is one culture, inviting these fighters once a year, transforming them to their planet/place/whatever... some kind of stupid, but this is how you can explain the clash of the different periods. At least this has been the background story 5 years ago ;-) They changed it in the meantime.
So I've heard :D but, personally, I love authentic history LARPs. That is on of the reasons why I have considered trying Epic Empires and others like it. Lovely to see other enthusiastic people out there.
Thank you for changing your opinion ;-) LARP as i know it, especially at the EpicEmpires-Event, really is like being in a well produced medieval-fantasy-film...
I completely agree with you ^^ I'm just tainted by the way me and my country-men (Danes) roleplay Warhammer Fantasy Empire. It was just a quick response - mainly because I was tired. But once again; lovely use of armour and weaponry. Once I thought that complete uniformity was fantastic, but now I have discovered the perfection in imperfection thanks to LARP'ers like these ;)
Well, you either see the hits or you feel them... even with padding and armour you feel the impact. And its about acting, so you can die whenever you've got the feeling that it's the right (and dramatic) moment ;-)
Keep it low, guys, keep it low, please... @OhOk Yea: Do you have some videos of your training? I'm very interested how you do this and how it should work with 500+ combatants... which armour do you use? SCA-standard? Or russian like layers of padded clothing, chainmail and plate?
as i already mentioned in german: I know about that issue ;-) But as i filmed completely out of the game, the raw material is very tricky as it is filmed with just one camera and there was no way to repeat any shot ;-) Normally i wouldnt use the fade to black as much as i did here, but somehow i thought it would fit here... and chnaging this is really to much work for a non-profit video ;-) But thank you very much for the advice... i'm always open minded for constructive thoughts!
anybody know where I can find the weapons that they're using? they all look to be made of some sort of foam that they cut to shape and put on a shaft but I can't find any like then online. did they make them?
Hi Shane, here in europe you can get these weapons via the www from various producers... or in shops. I think you're from the USA, maybe you can get some really fine weapons from Calimacil, they produce really good weapons. They are from Canada and maybe they sell their stuff in the USA. Or you get yourself the materials and try it on your own. It is fun to build your own foam-latex-sword... and it is quite cheaper than buying one. But it won't last as long as one of the Calimacil-series ;-)
OhOk Yea: I've checked your channel, but there are no videos in it... So, please, can you give me the direct link to them or maybe change something in your channel, so we can see the videos? Thank you! And now i'm waiting for your full film ;-)
Pretty damn good LARP you guys have over there in Deutschland. I wish there was one like this near me but there are no pre 17th century style LARP games in the U.S. that look as good as the ones in Europe. Where do the participants get their costumes (or parts for their costumes)?
You're right, when i do pen-and-paper-roleplay, i can have much more and much bigger and much brighter fantasy... no doubt about that! But I sit at the table, eat chips, drink beer... I only move my hand to throw the dice or to take a nip from my bottle. Here I have to move my whole body, I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins, i hear the sounds, i see the colours... it is of course more real than pen-and-paper. And totally different, so I like to do both!
Thank you, man ;-) I think the different weapons and armour gives the thing the "realistic"-touch, like the used look of Star-Wars Spaceships ;-) I watched the videos of the WHF-LARP and it has been the look of WHF... so, goal achieved... as we play a (very) historic Pilgrims-Camp during the "Epic Empires" LARP, it has to be more "realistic" than WHF. But there are more and more WHF-Players even in german LARP...
Always wanted to Experiance LARP... problem is, hard to find any actual LARP Groups in Oregon... I got a Sword of my own (Bastard Sword, and a friend of mine is hanging onto a Chainmail armor for me)
Danke!
I don't get the point... it's a hobby, you pay for participating the event... there are tournaments, but just for fun and not for profit (only ingame-profit such as land, coins, women, villages etc.)
Kameron Browning Well, Blizzard has got a lot of money... And this is LARP, not an MMOPG... there isn't much profit for the organizing crew, neither is there the need for real money tournament-prizes...
I don't know... the filmed event took place in an special LARP-area, called UTOPION in Western Germany... check out the Location: XXX.larp-gelaende.de ... the area is a former military training-ground.
Thank you very much! I think marching in the medieval period wasn't like in the later centuries... there were no "gleichschritt" (equal stepping?)... it wasn't just usefull enough.
No. In fact, they don't fire any projectile. You point them at someone, there's a bang, and if that someone feels like they were hit, they play wounded or dead.

Hell yeah, of course we use padded foam weapons ;-) ... and the armour is real... but small injuries can happen anyway! Even really bad injuries did happen in the past, but they are very rare... during a big battle with 1000 combatants it is nearly a wonder that there are only about 2-5 bad injuries (like broken ankles due to missstepping, broken noses cause of bad fitting helmets...)
No "king" here, just a provost... and yes, he's a little portly ;-) But hey, he's got a nice life with a lot of food and wine... and... ähem... in his convent ;-)
Jacob C you judge it by your common sense... if you get a direct hit to the chest with a two handed weapon or an arrow to low protected body-parts... then you can decide to "die"... it' all about having fun and creating great, epic pictures...

Larping isn't cringy, BAD LARPING is cringy, this is good Larp.
Cameron Raven than why is it cringey
These people aren't fuckin' around.
I watched this and totally changed my Opinion of larpers! I'd be down for THIS type of larping, looked like soooooo much fun!
LARP the Medieval version of Airsoft FUCKIN DEAL WITH IT
You can have LARP in any setting, not just a pseudo-medieval one...
I can see how this can be fun! Guys, try and be open minded. I mean, this is far better then just playing video games.
Floyd Keim III Thanks for being open minded. :) You're right, it's a whole lot of fun. One of the best things I've done in my life so far, it's pretty awesome and you get to meet a lot of great people.
Were do I sign up
They have LARP groups all around the place but over in europe is where they get very hardcore about it. I play at a local kingdom in southern texas. Try looking around for groups near you, they have several kingdoms all over the U.S. and europe that I know of and its not hard to get into it once you join up
I literally just found out where they where and when they meet and walked up and said "Hey, I wanna play"
TheCypher89 is there a way for disable to join larp

At least this has been the background story 5 years ago ;-) They changed it in the meantime.
If I larped, I would be banana. Maybe with a machine gun or something like that, I haven't really worked out the details.
Never larped but this looks like so much fun
Don't care if it's for "nerds" it's for people who want something different and quite frankly, this looks fun as heck!
I just found out about this LARP thing. And IT LOOKS SO FREEKING COOL. I wish I could play it too
So I've heard :D but, personally, I love authentic history LARPs. That is on of the reasons why I have considered trying Epic Empires and others like it.

I completely agree with you ^^ I'm just tainted by the way me and my country-men (Danes) roleplay Warhammer Fantasy Empire.
It was just a quick response - mainly because I was tired.
But once again; lovely use of armour and weaponry. Once I thought that complete uniformity was fantastic, but now I have discovered the perfection in imperfection thanks to LARP'ers like these ;)
Did my first LARP today. Its a lot more fun than most people stereotype about
Thank you! We'll see what this years epic-empire event will bring on ;-)
imagine this but armored combat league
i don't think i will personally ever larp but if it was full contact brawl then 100% i would
i don't care how friggin nerdy this may look it also looks fun as hell , i gotta do this some day
did dey die 4 reelz?
FlaikGames u fuk, i hav 300 confurmd killz in germaneh in ww2, i am best snipur in murican historah, u r rekt as fuk bcuz im fuken skillz
y u al srubs i has 500 confirmd kils is da veietnamas war do
Well, you either see the hits or you feel them... even with padding and armour you feel the impact. And its about acting, so you can die whenever you've got the feeling that it's the right (and dramatic) moment ;-)
This is called reenactment here ;-) So tell me, how do you simulate a fight with non-armoured combatants? Do they just get real injuries? ;-)
I'd love to do a star wars version of a full-scale battle
One question how do you know when you've "died" when u cant feel nothing thru the "pillow suit" / armor
Thank you... this is what i always think when I'm on this very special convention!
Keep it low, guys, keep it low, please...
@OhOk Yea:
Do you have some videos of your training? I'm very interested how you do this and how it should work with 500+ combatants... which armour do you use? SCA-standard? Or russian like layers of padded clothing, chainmail and plate?
How do the cannons work? Was it compressed air from a tank, or simply a foam projectile with a powder charge propelling it?
do the cannons and guns actually shoot anything out?
Best LARP seige video I have ever seen.
as i already mentioned in german: I know about that issue ;-) But as i filmed completely out of the game, the raw material is very tricky as it is filmed with just one camera and there was no way to repeat any shot ;-) Normally i wouldnt use the fade to black as much as i did here, but somehow i thought it would fit here... and chnaging this is really to much work for a non-profit video ;-)

Im seriously down to try this! any larp areas in California?
OhOk Yea:

larping sounds so fun I want to try it sometime
Heavy on the roleplay, light on the actual action
so it looks as if pilgerlager broke through the wall but were unable to make a push fully into the encampment?
+TK Jones:
Yes, that's the whole story in short ;-)
+Microbe1972 they did so well cutting down those romans though
I know right! And they almost broke free, and that was some amazing RP At the hospital.
There are Tolkien Elves and even some WH-Elves... you can be what you can act (and look!) like! Have your next holidays over here in Germany ;-)
Please have a look at the other videos, there you can see many other aspects of german-high-end-LARP ;-)
Thank you, man ;-) I think the different weapons and armour gives the thing the "realistic"-touch, like the used look of Star-Wars Spaceships ;-)

Nice! Maybe we'll meet there... have a look for Ignatius Fürchtegott in the Pilgrims-camp... I'll be there drawing and painting ;-)
this video touched me
all i can think of is the imagination song that they kept singing in south park
xD
Are there like tournaments for this that people can actually get paid for winning in?
I don't get the point... it's a hobby, you pay for participating the event... there are tournaments, but just for fun and not for profit (only ingame-profit such as land, coins, women, villages etc.)
Microbe1972 Well then what's the point of all of the WoW tournaments? You have to pay to play WoW so why would they have a prize for winning?
Kameron Browning
Well, Blizzard has got a lot of money...
And this is LARP, not an MMOPG... there isn't much profit for the organizing crew, neither is there the need for real money tournament-prizes...
Microbe1972 You make a fine point.
Kinda new to LARP. I thought the muskets and cannons were a nice touch.
how old do you need 2 be 2 do it
Ah Germany, Where good ol' Larp still exists. Though its making a comeback in Britain.
So epic! The team with the firearms and cannons though. Such cheaters XD
I don't know... the filmed event took place in an special LARP-area, called UTOPION in Western Germany... check out the Location: XXX.larp-gelaende.de ... the area is a former military training-ground.
This is acctually epic :) Would like to be in one myself.
Are those larpers actually getting stitches, or is it just some kind of special effect?
What are they using as ammo in the mortar and firearms? Awesome video!
Thank you very much! I think marching in the medieval period wasn't like in the later centuries... there were no "gleichschritt" (equal stepping?)... it wasn't just usefull enough.
I'm actually setting up a larp in terreton ID
I live in Nampa..i'd join
All right if you wish to come you may on july 12
and the twelfth of every month.
Are thos real guns
yes but they have blanks in them.
The fifer was playing the tune "British Grenadiers"
In my opinion, they look quite real... of course, they are foam-weapons, but the use and the look is quite accurate to reality!
it's like a live-action gameplay of Medivel
Wait are they supposed to be the Warhammer Empire? I saw Sigmar on some of their shields.
I don´t get it, is this thing like the matrix? if you die in LARP you die in real life?
I'm with you but didn't the U.S. pull out a while ago?
Do those muskets hurt when they hit someone?
No. In fact, they don't fire any projectile. You point them at someone, there's a bang, and if that someone feels like they were hit, they play wounded or dead.
did some people actualy get hurt
I'm just relieved you didn't dare play Amon Amarth as the soundtrack.
Says the person who is sitting in his parent's basement on his PC all day raging at LARPers because they actually get outside and exercise :p
OMFG!!! That's so awesome.
A question to (seriuos) larpers: Do you train (I mean sport-wise)? And if so, what exactly? Swordplay? Kendo?
Some do, some don't, but I don't think anyone does any actual sports training *for* LARP.
Some LARPers treat fights competitively, meaning some of them have meetings to train LARP fighting in particular, others treat it more like stage-fighting, where the focus is more on looking good than efficiently defeating your opponent.
Generally, any kind of actual fighting techniques are not that helpful because of safety or practical concerns (latex, not steel), with the exception of general things like proper stance or "how to hold your weapon".
so that's what they like, it really explains a lot.
How do you get hurt in larp
William MacIsaac
and you Sir, should leave others their joy in a fantastic hobby...
Answer to the OP; it varies from LARP to LARP. Some have set 'hit points' and 'armour points', which are monitored by judges, while others work on a trust system.
Answer to William Macisaac; Bugger off mate. Please and thank you.
17:04 Aw, man!!! I didn't get to swing my giant mallet!!!
You can't get everyone to play the way it's meant to play ;-)
Hi! Many sew their own costumes, but you can buy them... the bought costumes normally aren't that cool like the handmade ones and in the video you can see many individual sewn costumes/outfits. In the "Pilgerlager" there are many skilled weapon builders too, so its possible to get an individual, cool looking weapon...
I dont understand the concept behind LARPing. So, how do you keep one side from cheating? If you are stabbed or slashed, and dont go down, what then? Or what if they get back up when no one is looking? I mean, you basically have to trust one another to referee themselves??
Well, the concept behind it is: FUN... you can "cheat", means you just can ignore the rules or make them work in your favorite... but this doesn't generate FUN. If you "cheat" or don't play in a common sense, you won't have FUN very long as nobody will play with you. LARP is about generating unique scenes of acting... Loosing generates scenes worthy to act in...
i think they have game masters just like paintball
Microbe1972 I like larping also but it's spelled losing read a book for Christ sakes
UndeadDave
Yes, Dave, you're right. But as I am not a native speaker, this little surplus "o" shouldn't be a problem... as I wrote in the other comment, it is more important WHAT is written, not HOW it is written... or do you have problems understanding the meaning of the sentence with an extra "o"?
its annoying every time when the screen goes black, i mean come on
Hell yeah, of course we use padded foam weapons ;-) ... and the armour is real... but small injuries can happen anyway! That's why we all wave these long pole-weapons in front of us ;-)
Man this looks so cool I been trying to get in one!
This is one of the things I'll do before I die.
At 0:13 it says "Pilgerlager goes to war" ;-) No dude, no arming cap... so, where did you see this dude?
i wish there was larping for the greek phalanx that would be awsome
There is reenacting
WHERE !!!
+Glaber Marian:
There is even a LARP-Group trying to set up a greek phalanx... but they lack the people to do so ;-)
Any info on that group !? I would totally join it!
How do you know when you die?
Jacob C you judge it by your common sense... if you get a direct hit to the chest with a two handed weapon or an arrow to low protected body-parts... then you can decide to "die"... it' all about having fun and creating great, epic pictures...
Is this real?
Blake Winchester :
Yes. It's real... with costumes and foam-weapons ;-)
Maybe one day the people in Argentina will start to play LARP too... I'd like to see some sort of Acztek, Inka or Maya-LARP with great bird-feather-coats and awesome stone-pieces-on-wood-clubs ;-)
