    In this video we install the Moser one piece axle shafts in my Jeep CJ7. Quite an upgrade and correcting the issues from the shop work I had done on my Jeep many years ago.

    Just got off the phone with Moser on 8/13/21 to verify the installation of this bearing/kit. I had two different people look at it this video and they both stated the bearing is installed correctly. I really appreciate the feedback and comments on this but I'm going to stick with the wisdom, expertise and experience of a very reputable company and keep the bearing as is. Moser said they have sold thousands of these kits and have never had any feedback that the bearing is backwards and/or not pictured correctly. JD

    Great video. Moser axles are on my to-do list, although I'm still debating having a local shop do gearing, limited-slip, and axles all at once but it REALLY sucks when stuff isn't done properly.

      Yeah it's a hard decision honestly and I just didn't have a good experience. Just research the shop for sure!! JD

      @@JDOffline Just placed an order from Summit for my Moser Single Piece Axle upgrade. I have the AMC 20 Narrow Track so my physical axle shafts should be slightly shorter, but I imagine the rest of the kit is the same. Circled back to this video to familiarize myself with the process. Thanks again for all the details. Just dropped my rear axle to do a complete refurbish. It is 43 years old and needs a face lift. Cheers! Mike

    That lock ring has .008 press on it. Bearing has about .003. You installed it correctly. I installed the same axle kit on my bosses 78 cj7. My number was .030 on Bearing to backing plate. Nice jeep by the way.

    And remember to fully lube the bearings before assembly they are NOT lubed by the oil in the differential case. I was in Florida from Michigan when the 30 YO Detroit Locker in our '84 CJ7 (with a Moser axle conversion) went bad. I had them put in a TruTrack and while doing that they felt they needed to replace the bearings. The first install lasted 20 miles as they did not lube the bearings. Still not convinced they trimmed the bearing spacer per spec, one side ran hot for 600 miles (towing it) until it apparently settled in. Taking it in to my trusted local Ring and Pinion shop to do a full inspection.

    This must be their upgraded kit. I installed their one pcs kit back in 95. No issues. Inner seal first, then bearing (installed wide part inside), then the race (thick part facing out) then backing plate (it holds race in place) then outer seal with grease zerk. A long pipe that seats on the inner part of bearing, when hammered with heavy hammer, drives those bearings on nicely.

    • @JDOffline
      @JDOffline  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of thoughts on this kit but I've had no issues with the way I installed it. Thanks for checking out the video. JD

  • @toddpatterson9318
    @toddpatterson9318 ปีที่แล้ว

    The back of that spacer doesn't determine how deep the bearing sits . The lip, outer edge of the spacer does. You could grind 3/4 inches off the back and it would stop because of that outer edge.

    Have you driven your jeep much since you installed the rear axle and bearing kit? How's it holding up? Does it get very hot?

    • @JDOffline
      @JDOffline  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really have not driven it a lot with our move we just made. The Jeep is about to be cleaned up and get back on the road. We built a house and sold our old house rather quick late last year so everything has been in storage for about 6 months. In the miles I have driven it I've had no issues. JD

      Thank you!! I ordered it from Summit Racing part number MSR-CJ-L. Check out the reviews on this kit compared to others. It's a little more pricey but comes with everything you need. Brakes was the worst part of the install so if you can avoid disassembling them it will save you some time for sure. Thanks for checking out the video, I learned a lot on this one. JD

    • @JDOffline
      @JDOffline  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rob. The BDS suspension is great and it rides better than what was on it which i believe was superlift springs (not sure 100%). In terms of off road performance I haven't really had a chance to test it yet and my Jeep will only ever see light off road conditions. JD

    I’m sorry to see someone using Omix Ada / Crown/ Rugged Ridge parts. Unfortunately they are extremely poor quality. The inner seal being blue in color is likely the same brand too. The old school seal companies were either Orange- National Seal Co., Green - CR Chicago Rawhide, or red- Timken.

    Do you have any problems with overheating with that small block Chevy in your jeep?

    • @JDOffline
      @JDOffline  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did initially but it was my fault. To start with I put pure antifreeze in my radiator so I drained it and added water and ran it for a while and drained it again and added more water. This seems to have solved my issue. I do have the Novak recommended aluminum radiator along w dual electric fans. So far so good once I fixed the coolant issue. JD

    Hi JD, I subscribe and love your channel.. I have an AMC 20 in my 82 CJ5 and was wondering if you have done any research as to how much hp this rear end can handle long term?

    • @JDOffline
      @JDOffline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kenny! I did do a lot of research on this topic and was considering an axle swap to hold up to my 350 swap but the more I researched the more I understood the weak point of the AMC20 to be the two piece axles. If you eliminate that which I did, I haven't had any problems with mine so far. I'm not too hard on it though and don't do anything in terms of rock crawling etc. So, I think the axle is plenty tough for normal use but if you are going offload and rock crawling etc then not sure how it would hold up for that. My engine is 357 horsepower so we will see how it holds up long term. Thanks for the feedback on the channel as well. JD

    Hey its me again. Thank you for kind of listening to me. and please don't get pissed at me I really am trying to help and great video by the way. Can I ask a favor before you delete me or report me. I always try to help. Look at the directions and read the part highlighted in red. It says. (LARGE LIP ON INNER RACE) shown with an arrow. it should be towards the splines on axle (carrier) now look at your bearings you took out. what is the thicker part of the inner race. YEA the bearings no matter if two piece or one piece axles it's still a semi floating axle and again there on backwards SORRY I know it sucks. I have the bearing in front of me rate now. so the thick part off the OUTER race should face the backing plate. Probably the guy at Moser didn't really understand. If I'm wrong Ill give you the biggest apology. but I've bin doing it for way to long. please look at the inner race/bearing and see what the thicker part is at time 12:35.

      @@JDOffline I'm with BarberChop on this one still. I've been installing these before timken came out with the set 9 bearing (which is still a two piece bearing, you have the bearing and outer race/cup). The LARGER LIP OF THE INNER RACE goes toward splines. Why do you think the retainer ring wasn't against the bearing any more? Because it was trying to force the axle out!! It's really sad that the manufacturer you spoke to doesn't know, though he's probably never turned a wrench in his life. But at least the instructions from Moser, rugged ridge, crown automotive, and Yukon all have it right! Can't say the same for G2 though! Here it is again LARGER LIP OF THE INNER RACE GOES TOWARD THE SPLINES. Oh and you MUST have a thrust block.

      @@adamwood8165 So you are also saying the bearing installation in this video is backwards? JD

    • @adamwood8165
      @adamwood8165 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JDOffline yessir. And I'm sorry about it bud. I don't know why so many people think it's installed different than the factory two piece axles. The only difference is the two piece has a shoulder/stop machined into the axle and the one piece uses a retainer ring as the stop. And of course you have to install everything from opposite ends. I do have a question about the bearing though. Is it a two piece bearing? Does it have a bearing and outer race that can be separated?
