Being a great singer isn't about being "better" than anyone else. It's about being yourself and putting everything you have into a song. Comparing Anouk to Janis Joplin and arguing about who is better is ridiculous. They both have something unique and precious to give you.
I made my children listening to this and other Anouk songs a lot back in the days we went on trips ... I believe they took something away from this exposure....
Comparing Anouk to Joplin is like comparing lemons to Volkswagons. I have lived in Texas for 50 years, where Joplin was born, and I can tell you that Joplin had a very limited following and a very short career. She was just noisy and weird. Anouk is incredibly talented and has an awesome voice. Joplin couldn't have carried her luggage. If you want to compare her, why would you, to a great voice, but still not at Anouk's level, compare her voice to Linda Ronstadt, but with her Dutch accent I think I like Anouk more. The world should be glad that Anouk didn't get Americanized or sell out to EMI, things would not have been the same. The last thing I would want to hear is Anouk doing country music!!! American music is puke at this moment in time. The singers are acts, glitter and flash, and the talent are all lost campers in the game of life. There are not the writers and bands there once was, now all production from plastic. I, like many in the U.S., clicked on her picture once to see "who is that?" I have been relishing in her music ever since. I only wish I could have experienced her career from the beginning as you lucky Dutch folks did. I would have been at Gelredome 2008 I guarantee. Thanks to all who post her stuff here, without you many would not get to enjoy. And now, back to our program........
fried463 Yes dude always singing live and without auto tune crap results in the occasional poor performance. Fortunately in Anouk's case her good performances vastly outweigh the poor. They also outweigh 90% of what is out there. But, if that was a "defense" for Janis Joplin...I hear ya. Because that was just BS what Duke there was claiming.

Thanks for listing her. LeAnn Rimes has put out exactly one decent song in "Nothing Better to Do". That's it. I've listened to all her other cow-herding tunes and it is literally time in hell to endure them. Lyle is beyond boring. Who is Ruby Jane Smith? Who is Sarah Jarosz? Big names in Austin? Lived in Austin for 3 years. Only music that is good there is blues & rock. Cow-scene music - same old crap - three chords about their cheatin' wife or trailer leaks when it rains or some other crap. Sorry if I came off anti-Texas or seemed like I defended Joplin. I love Texas, but hated Joplin. I have everything Anouk ever turned out! And..... a person can live in Texas and not like commercial cow music. If you are into Lyle, LeAnn, Willie, Kelly or any of the rest, then great that you find something you like. On the other hand, I have been there, done that. Some of that corn is just too much country for me. I'm basically a rocker, but can appreciate almost any performance that is well done at least once. I do call crap crap. Joplin was crap, IMHO. Anouk has her bad tunes also. For instance, Birds is ok, but Pretending As Always is a better tune, again, IMHO. The rest of that album is "less than her best work", again, IMHO. One thing about her is that she pulls from her emotions in her writing. We all know she's had trouble with all of her men. Maybe, she can't pick a good one, who knows? She might be tough to live with, too. Some more of my business. But, you can feel the emotion in her tunes. I can also discuss the various bands she's had behind her if you want to go there. The Gelredome 2008 (Who's Your Mama?) assembly of musicians, to me, were her best. Regardless of whether you feel that way or not, please do not discount my affections for Texas or Anouk.
