Franz Joseph was hunting when he got lost, and just after twilight, he saw a peasant's house. He was hungry, so the lady offered him an omelet and put sugar on it because she had nothing else. And because of the sugar, the omelet stuck to the pan and she scrubbed it and put it on a plate, serving it with shame... But the Emperor said this omelet was amazing.
I love going on your adventures with you the place was beautiful and the garden you showed was beautiful I would go back just for the atmosphere and beauty of the restaurant the food looked amazing have a great adventure love your videos love you ❤
Bravo, those ceilings are so beautiful. Well umm, the pancakes filled you up. Yes I agree side of whipped cream or ice cream/ lemon sherbet would have raised the bar for that dessert.
Hi James , I truly enjoyed this weeks Vlog , you’re dining experience at Cafe Central the dishes looked amazing I agree a bigger portion is always nicer. I’m a hardy eater as well. Austria 🇦🇹 is one beautiful place , thank you 🙏 for sharing this great dinner James ! Jose P.
It's a must see, but also try Landtmann and the Hotel Sacher or Café Demel for Sachertorte if you have time, it's interesting to see the subtle differences in café culture between them.
Hi James! Thanks for sharing this video with us! We found it to be interesting and enlightening. Really completely different then most chosen dishes. ❤ Glad you were happy!
Hi James! I enjoyed this review (as well as all of your reviews). You've created a very original niche for yourself; I don't think any other restaurant reviewer I've seen on YT has your panache. Great haircut too!
This review was a joy & extremely interesting to watch. I very much agree with your statement that one should not condemn nor dismiss any food establishment anywhere simply as a "tourist trap"! As you so accurately stated, judge the "complete package" with regards to food, service, & atmosphere! All key ingredients in enjoying the pleasures of ANY dining experience. As a personal note, Vienna is a location in Europe I never had the opportunity to visit even though I so very much wished to visit for most of life. Just never had the good fortune to travel there, but I can still "dream" of the Blue Danube, the meals of boiled beef & schnitzel, the strudel & sweets, the opera house, & the weight of history Vienna offers to us all. Your wonderful video presentation simply reminds me of the vast & wonderful world I still need to experience & still need to explore! Thanks for being among the "vehicles" of travel that does bring this "ancient" traveler to those "desired" locations via your channel. Sincerely, thanks for sharing!!!!
I ate there about 3 years ago. I lucked out as it was fall and was fairly empty. Food was good and the service was remarkably friendly (friendliness is something I’m afraid I find lacking in Austrians) Vienna is a wonderful town. Very pricy, but worth it
Another amazing Austrian dessert! Seems the food is decent enough to warrant a visit despite the touristic vibe, and of course the stunning architecture makes it worthwhile... **adds to list** Can't wait to see the other places and eats from your Vienna trip!
An Austrian friend took me there in 1995. Been there. Enjoyed the history. The ambience. Good meal including the cakes. Still have the memories. It’s interesting that one location would define 20th century
Your channel is so honest, current and just enjoyable to watch. Esp for those of us who are living vicariously through your experience and you are so humble and not a multi-millionaire reviewing. Thank you again! PS love the haircut!
Great review, reflective and honest, as always. Nevertheless, it was amusing to see you drinking an Ottakringer (classic working class beer) in the festive ambience of Café Central. That is true openness!
Love a suckling pork, and yours looked exactly how you described it! Agree too that the dessert needed whipped cream or a cream anglaise to bring it to another level. Now that you’ve tried the most known restaurant, hope you are able to try some excellent Austrian delights in less touristy locations. Another on point review, Thank you James.👍💕 Enjoy Austria✨👍
Agreed on the “tourist” comments some people may make. It’s not really an important variable when the overall experience and food are at the top of the list. Why miss out on any particular experience because some may deem an establishment touristy? That being said I really enjoy your reviews. You get 3 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
But what makes this café unique in the world and Vienna with it as well is the fact that at the same time in January 1913. Central has been visited by the most important historical figures of the 20th century Stalin, Hitler, Tito, and Trotsky. They all lived in Vienna between two World wars.
As someone from Vienna I never went there but whenever I walk by it there seems to be a long queue of tourists waiting to get in. It's kind of funny that this is the first time I see the interior of Café Central when I could just go see it for myself.
You're right James, the experience is a very important part of the restaurant rating. I had the best time in Florence in a tiny underground restaurant where we sat at long picnic tables with locals. Also in Florence we are in a restaurant on the Ponte Vecchio which was just phenomenal. These were probably the 2 best dining experiences that I have ever had.
Hi James, Thank you for your review of Cafe Central in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹. I was absolutely gob smacked by the architecture of the restaurant and I could see it being formerly a bank/stock exchange. Just classic on the outside and incredible on the inside. And the food looked to be excellent and very attractively presented. I would say that I would have got my money’s worth! Take care and thank you for your usual excellent experience. Best Wishes, Peter
Went there a few years ago. I had the traditional Schnitzel and strudel. Touristy yes, but overall very food and good value in an outstanding building. Stunning atmosphere. Cheers from AKL, NZL.
Off topic- I was busy watching the background couple kiss and hug during your intro in the park. 👨❤️💋👨Love was in the air. Off to watch rest of the video now 😊
My parents were Hungarian. Eastern\Central cuisine is different from Western Europe Cuisine. First, there is much less emphasis on presentation. Also, the food is much more influenced by "peasant" origins. Sometimes you get some fanciness in deserts but in your choice of today it was simply a nostalgic remembrance of essentially the last Austria Hungarian Emperor, the disappearance of the Empire and just a very simple dessert that this Emperor liked. Thanks James. BTW,hope you are staying warm in NYC. Super cold January for going around the city.
Cool. I live in Vienna, havent been to Cafe Central for a while. But my daughter is vegan (!). Whenever we go to Blaa Alm in Altaussee (rather often) she cant resist a proper "Kaiser Schmarren" (your desert). Which is of course not vegan 😉
Hi James, Where did you go to school and what did you study? Do you have a job or are you living on TH-cam videos? You seem like a nice kid. Since I watch your videos I was just curious.
Leberkäs rather than Lieberkäs (the Le- sounds like English lay more than lee). I think Central is the most architecturally stunning of the classic Viennese cafés but it is definitely the one that draws the most tourists. And you're right, most people who go there are only having cake rather than a savoury course - and that's the right choice really, the selection of cakes is fantastic. I got into the habit of choosing the eponymous cake for whichever café I was in - the Centraltorte was a chocolate-topped, marzipan-filled effort with an edible red chocolate seal on top. Having lived in Bavaria I was already familiar with Kaiserschmarrn - in Bavaria and Austria, Schmarrn is also slang for nonsense (as in you're talking a load of nonsense) so Kaiserschmarrn always elicits a bit of a smile.
When I was in Vienna I was going to eat lunch there but the line was so long to get in I left. Same with Cafe Sacher. Maybe I should have been less impatient.
I just turned on your video. I didn’t watch it through yet but I see that you were in Vienna Austria did you happen to get a slice of the famous Sachertorte cake?
I dunno James that food was kinda meh. That pork dish was basically a tasting menu sized portion. Though the restaurant itself is spectacular. Nice video as always.
We had a layover in Vienna a few years ago. It’s a stunning city. We passed on Central because of the touristy rap, and went to Sacher and Demel instead 🤣. Having said that, I had the best cup of coffee in my life at Sacher. And as I always feel obliged to say, Sachertorte is dry and overrated.
The Sachertorte in the Hotel Sacher disappointed me.However, elsewhere I found some good veal Schnitzels. Austrian food is good, but you'll eat better in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. You need to hit Paris. Big time.
I was fortunate to visit and eat at Café Central in Vienna for the first time nearly 48 years ago, and a number of times since, enjoying a strong and excellent coffee and Sacher Torte while reading the newspapers on bamboo poles, and then later for dinners. Thanks for this visit down memory lane for me.
The people who live in Vienna aren’t the most friendliest people. I went there when I lived in London. They love to take our money though! As tourists.
I don’t think animal lovers can watch your videos! You love your meat. Eating Horse!!! And liking it! Horses are such beautiful animals. Those Germans love to eat meat. They don’t care what they kill to get it!
Just curious. Why Vienna? Isn't Paris or even Belgium home to the most Michelin starred restaurants. Why not a Scandinavian country? Vienna to me was entirely forgettable. Almost like German food. Bottom of the barrel.
Love that you remind us that a superior memorable “eating out” time is about the whole experience. R.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, when it comes down to it, it's not just the food you remember.
Your channel is such a peaceful escape for me. You make me want to get into fine dining.
Thank you! That makes me happy to hear!
@@Jamesnuyou’re welcome!

A torn-up pancake-like dessert sounds amazing! I'm sure munching along to some classical music added to the ambiance as well.
Indeed!

It looks like they forgot to cook the chard. The architecture is gorgeous.
Gorgeous architecture indeed!
After the Leberkas, James hoofed it over to the Cafe Central.
As per Google translate, the word, 'Schmarrn', means 'nonsense'.
Haha!
That did look like a great experience. To bad European portions seem to ve a little light. Thank you
It was a great time. At least the dessert was very filling.
Check out the Rote Bar at the Hotel Sacher.
If I'm back in Vienna, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the recommendation!
I don't recall if tipping was expected in Austria?
It's customary, but not to the levels seen in the US.
When I was in Vienna I was going to eat lunch there but the line was so long to get in I left. Same with Cafe Sacher. Maybe I should have been less impatient.
Yeah, the lines were pretty long, but at least when I was there, they seemed to move quickly.
You have to tip in Austria?
Yeah, but not as much compared to the US.
No, tip is included, but it’s common to give a little tip up to 10%.
Nice. Touristy but not tourist prices.
Indeed!
I just turned on your video. I didn’t watch it through yet but I see that you were in Vienna Austria did you happen to get a slice of the famous Sachertorte cake?
