    Great vid. I am actually doing this right now. Im someone that has spend hundreds of hours learning unreal and making little mechanics and experiences but ive never really finished anything because i always get hung up on small things, trying to make 1 animation perfect or something, then i never work on the project again... this time im making a game specifically for my 2 and 3 year old girls. Its small, reasonably easy to make, and i already know my target audience is not going to care if its 100% perfect. THIS TIME I WILL FINISH A PROJECT!

    • @poiinteractive

      Oh nice, what kind of game are you doing for your 2 girls? Mine are 3 weeks old and 16 months-old, also 2 girls.
      The only "video game" I've been able to make my oldest play, are those happyclicks DOT net "touch-tap-games". They are like powerpoint animation, but where any key or click advance the animation to the next step.
      Like small building popping up every click, and little cars driving down the road, etc.
      I might try some of that too, thanks for the idea :D

    • @FFTVYoutube
      @FFTVYoutube 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @raphaeld9270 it's just a whack a mole style game where little brightly coloured people pop up and wave their arms n make a noise, and you have to tap them to get a point and when you do it says the number out loud, and you have to get a certain amount of them to progress to next lvl. Just something fun that can hopefully help teach them at the same time

    If you are making a short game just be aware of the Steam refund policy. Anything under two hours can be returned automatically and some people actually do it. It might not be a crushing factor but if I had to choose between making a 1.5 hour game and 2 hours game I would rather try to fit in a little bit more to get to those 2 hours.

    • @poiinteractive
      @poiinteractive  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      Thanks for pointing that out, yes that is a concern. But historically if you price your game well and it is actually good, most people tend to respect that. There are always going to be those who will take advantage but well, such is life I guess.

    • @Microemall
      @Microemall 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      this is a problem when playing some short games, as there will be filler and unfun repeated content just to get past the 2 hour refund mark

    • @novh4ck
      @novh4ck 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Microemall Yeah. It sucks when devs add fillers after they figure out the game is short. It's better to not do that. However if I was designing a game from scratch I would be probably targeting 2 hours from the beginning.

    • @poiinteractive
      @poiinteractive  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@novh4ck That's a good point. In honesty, my current 2-4 hour intended gameplay target is totally based on a hunch regarding what feels right for such games (and I wasn't even thinking of the refund policy). So my intention really isn't to pad it out, and only add things that have sufficient merit! Additionally, the A short hike's average time to complete is actually below 2 hours and seems like it still didn't suffer greatly from refunds.

    Hello sir, I would like to highlight an important feature of a short hike. During the game. There is a point where you have to search for something, I think it is a shovel. Intentionally, the developer hid six versions of the shovel in different parts of the map. Whichever one you discover first is considered the true shovel and when you discover it, the other ones disappear. In this way, he has you discover the shovel, but no matter which way you go, you will find it very quickly. This is one of many tricks that make the game appear much shorter. Consider this for your game. Bless

    From the marketing perspective: If you're making a short game, it's actually not a good idea to announce it more than a few months before release. As a customer, I would not like to wait a few or more years in anticipation for a game that can be finished and 100% completed in just an hour or two.

    • @poiinteractive

      @@poiinteractive I remember a game called Storyteller. It took 15 years from the time from its announcement to its release. The game could be completed in just a few hours with not much replay value. It also didn't help that the game was so short that people felt the game didn't even explore its mechanics to its true potential.
      To be fair, it did receive some updates later.
      Guess here's a second piece of advice: If you make a game short, make sure it still feels complete rather than something that feels like it has much unused potential.

    I've wanted to make games ever since I was a kid, and now that I've happened upon Thor's (from Pirate Software) anti-doomscroll videos and game-making inspirational videos I've had a much more newly renewed interest in making games. I've had the idea for a game in the works for years now but never knew how to execute it, but now I think I do know. It's gonna be a roguelike sandbox survival game set in a giant's terrarium that he trapped you in for trying to steal his treasure. I have several "ages" of progression planned out already, so it should be easier to implement mechanics in sets rather than aimlessly adding whatever feels right lol

    I know i tend to work on smtg really hard for a few weeks/months then leave it and feel ashamed, a sour taste in my mouth of another unfishined thing.
    Like you i came to the conclusion that i need to build small games, 6months to 1 year dev time game. Because it also forces you to learn skills you wont learn if you stick to big projects: making a demo, polishing to the max, debugging entirely, marketting a bit, making a steam page... The market is over saturated with cozy gigantic polygon having animals like A Short Hike.
    I think the cozy decline starts now until there is a new Animal Crossing released that has unseen, innovative, and exciting features.
    I feel like it's going to not only hard to stand out in the PSX market, but also be appealing to crowd of players who are going to be burnt out being cozy and farming and cutting down trees and looking at the exact same cutesy indie art style they've been seeing for 5 years.

    So the developer made over 2 million dollars ... He'll probably never make another game. He's done. That's the only unfortunate thing

      if he makes another good game the hype will guarantee he makes more plus he can sell at a higher price point , plus it would sell more copies of this game
