- I planned on doing this earlier but my potato pc couldn't record it properly without quality being extremly bad, it's still bad, but less bad.
So yeah, the new Shifting Mound arguments. I like them very much.
Also the first run has all the new Shifting Mound animations you can get in one run, just as a bonus.
For those unaware, the game updated recently and they reworked the ending, added a few extra animations and updated the music on Apo and the Shifting Mound tracks, alongside quality of life improvements.

It would be interesting if, after making the right choices in the argument, we could get a "compromise ending" in which Shifting Mound and Long Quiet destroy the old world, but allow themselves to transfer all life from it to the new world, where it could develop and die without the cruelty of instant annihilation.

Something about her suffering is delusion argument kinda throws me off.
If everything exists in contrast, but suffering is delusion are happiness and pleasure delusion as well?
Also if she considers the Vessels ‘petty’, ‘fickle’, and ‘fleeting’ then why use their perspectives to try and convince you in the first place.
At the same time I kinda feel for her. She just wants to finally be free and experience a million new beginnings or whatever, but her stupid bird boyfriend keeps trying to have philosophical arguments

It’s weirdly amazing how the options to argue with her vs her vessels changes the perspective of the argument.
When we were just arguing with her vessels, it felt like The Long Quiet was on the back foot. Like he could respond to the vessels he’d seen because he both loves the the shifting mound but couldn’t bring himself to address her directly. It gave off this impression that she was implicitly right but we (reasonably) didn’t want to just bring about the end of everything without a second thought.
Now it feel like a legit argument with a good back and forth. And her “divine confidence” feels like…well divine, pretentious, over confidence. Kinda similar to The Narrator. The Long Quiets trying to make his points and She’s outright refusing to listen.
I will say it *does* make me feel more justified in leaving the cabin with her. Before I did feel a little guilty neglecting my God duties, but now, I’m like “I am not about to rebuild the universe with you if your gonna have this big an attitude problem TO THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN FREE US!”
What are gods to humans? Naught but pretentious and divine know-it-all which know little about what it means to be mortal
@@michelecastellotti9172 Kind of hard to make that argument to the very image of Change and Death. Without her, The Long Quiet has to make a reality from scratch.

Edit: To elaborate, I think a lot of the details of what she says is wrong, and she's kinda a jackass about it, but to a certain extent it's understandable. We are the only thing she has ever known and when we argue she feels scared we will regect her. Similar to when we regect her in chapter 2 she lashes out
I definitely prefer this version of the argument, because the Shifting Mound is no longer explicitly correct. Like she says, it's all about perspective, and all she sees it is from a Godly perspective, a timeline and domino effect so far into the future that no human could ever comprehend it. She sees the forest, but not the trees. She only sees the beauty that can happen after the suffering, NOT the suffering. WE are seeing the suffering. WE are trying to get her to see the suffering. This is the travesty that the Narrator has subjected us to. Because we're split in two, there is no longer a way for us to just UNDERSTAND each other.
I like this version as well. The previous version of the game was heavily biased for shifty's arguments and I felt that it led to people falsely assuming that she was speaking objective truths.
@@Princess-Pointless-Dump I also enjoy that the only way for us to 'win' this exchange is to keep rejecting her perspective. It really hammers the idea that we're seeing something that she isn't, and we're clinging to THAT perspective just as fervently as she's clinging to hers. We win because she represents change, while we represent stillness, in a sense. "We are unmovable." If we don't move, our true nature will shine through as the Long Quiet and we can actually stand up against her because we're actually kind of 'embracing' our Godhood.

@@Princess-Pointless-Dump yeahhhh the only sort of hint we get to this is with the Razor. If you don't bring the knife, all you have to do is just...stand there. Hold your ground. She'll eventually just crumble. She loses against you when you hold your ground and just remain yourself
I mean in my opinion that’s what gods should be. They should see the bigger scale as they govern that scale.
If we maintain this dying old universe, perhaps whatever civilisation that survived the previous entropy will survive, but then that would be it. The countless lives that would be born in the next universe will never be.
By saving the present, we are damning the future.
By trying to see the smaller scale, we become ignorant to the bigger picture.
I do like the more confrontational arguments that are directed more at Shifty herself compared to that of the vessels arguing against the experiences you've had with them.

Similar to the Razor and beat princess, she enjoys sneaking up on you and sliting your throat.
No matter what you try she cuts you down from an unseen angle.
The route ends when she's a full blown invisible Predator and the Voice of the Cheated decides to "flip the table" and burn the whole basement down with her in it.
This makes sense in the part where the long quiet is the soil providing nutrients for the shifting mounds to sow its seeds for change and growth

I love that all the animations really play into how grand and beautiful the shifting mound is on her cosmic scale _except_ for the dens one which is *pounces you bites you scratches you*
I notice there seems to be an alternate final argument for independence.
Her arguments seem very familiar to what you can grasp of Buddhism.
The idea that suffering comes from attachments and that it is an illusion. That you can only break free by letting go of what you are attached to.
There is truth to her words, but it’s also odd to say there isn’t value in the individual within the universe.
To deny the individual that is a part of the universe and the suffering they endure would be as if to deny the universe as a whole.
For what value is the universe if the pieces are not valued as a part of it?
And the perspectives and experiences they share?
Tony (writer of the game) says one of the inspirations behind STP is eastern religion. Someone also made an analysis of the game on YT through a Daoist lens, especially when you take a look at their palette and that the Creator made sure that the tear between them was rough, so that a piece of one is in the other. The Shifting Mound claims she clings to nothing, yet she clings unto the Long Quiet and also uses the framework of the material world in her argument.
But I also think this is the appeal of the ending where you leave with the normal Princess. You can either accept Shifty’s philosophy that puts you both above the rest of the universe as gods and accept the sort of Buddhist belief in having no attachments to your suffering, or, if you don’t agree with it, leave as mortals who can live a life with mortal attachments.
I like that this game doesn’t ever really feel like you’re making a wrong choice.

I also think she isn’t denying the individuality as a concept, but individuality between the Shifting mound and the Long Quiet, since they both are the same being, split apart by a mortal with a wish of a deathless world.
The Princess is just saying that The Long Quiet, even if apart from her physically, is part of her, without her he’d be stagnated
The point is that she is too high and mighty to grasp the perspectives of mortal humans. She has fair arguments, when they are all focused on the importance of her role as a concept of change, but she refuses to understand why death in particular is bad to mortals and unwanted.
She mocks the narrator because "he was driven by his fear of death" but she knows not death at all, unbeknowst to her, she is fighting against her own end in your hands.
The narrator says it when you tell him that you are gonna save the princess, "if you say that, there is nothing else for me to say, you dont understand death, you have not died, you cannot die, so you cant understand the abject horror of dying."
There is also the fact that the narrator did understand the importance of the shifting mound as a concept, thats why he says he made the cut "uneven" when splitting them, "so there is a bit of you in her, and a bit of her in you". The voices of the Long Quiet represent that part of her in them, allowing for change to still exist in a world without death, without the shifting mound.
it is cool to be able to argue with shiffty directly, and it really pass down her perspective,her infinity divine confidence, and honestly ? can't blame her for thinking suffering is delusion, just seeing all the vessels and considering even in the routes the player screews her over she still see it as valuable perpective, nothing is permanent for her, she suffer in a moment and in the other she has billions of different perpectives and see how meaningless small things can be when compared to the grand scheeme of the universe
tho i still prefer to adress the vessels statments directly, it feels more...personal, and more like you are actually thinking about what she said and arguing againt/in favor of that, instead of trying to basically reject her all being and philosophy

personally i still feel like it's stupid to try and halt the literal concept of change/entropy and am pro-be free gods together route, but i really love these new arguments! feels like a great philosophical discussion
I mean, choosing to be gods together is to decide to be complicit in a truly unimaginable amount of mortal suffering and destruction. Holding that on my conscience would be devastating, even if it's supposedly balanced out by all the potential goods the change might bring.

Y'know, I was mapping out my image of a near-perfect run for each ending, and this update came like the meteor that killed the dinosaurs to waste about 2 Sundays worth of time I spent on those route maps.
And I'm not even mad about it.
Honestly, the Shifting Mounds argument is revealed weakest when arguing directly against her perspective. There is likely a way to find a solution in which she exists, and that the world is fine. She never really considers it, for she believes that she sees everything all at once. In a way she does, but it's shown in her argument too that she has not experienced the world outside. She experiences all realities she can all at once, and the world outside is not one of those realities until it happens. She is everything, but at the same time she is finite, because she only exists across reality if she does exist across reality, she cannot experience when she does not, or where she is not. This leaves her perspective narrow, and though she CAN know everything, she does not, when she believes she already does. This is what separates her from the Long Quiet, who can recognize that there is a question before the answer, which brings an irony to their own conversation.

I'd like to know how the creators come up with these arguments.
As amazing as this update is I think I prefer the way the vessels come out in the previous version. Like the are summoned forth by the shifting mount to argue on its behalf. Here shifty herselves move and thw vessels do a fnaf jumpscare impression
More than anything the old version made some sense and had some phylosophies that actually made you think about life,your own life,this one just sounds like her ego's doing all the talking
Tbf, she does exactly that since some arguments you can choose are aimed at the specific vessel while others are directly addressed to her.
Is it bad that I don’t like that we can effectively argue back because I think that shifty is right.
I mean if the cycle is stopped, then all the life that would’ve been born in later cycles wouldn’t be born. Eternal stagnation damns more than it saves.

i neither have the game nor do have seen all that is in the new update, i have however seen manlybadassheroe's playthrough of the game, which was before this update. i say this because i have no idea if it is in this update but i hope that perhaps one day we could debate the echo a bit more. since his position is essentially "death bad, world better without death, why do you not get this" and refuses to elaborate. supposedly getting rid of the mound would also remove suffering from existance and while i personally doubt, it the fact that it even is a discussion here means it is more probable than i belive. i was mostly on the side of not getting rid of the mound, mainly due to the enormous ammount of possible consequenses, probabilites and questions (can living beings still procreate, do they have to eat and many many more). not helped at all by the echo only saying "world better" when challenged on this, ignorant is the least of what he was. the implication that suffering will dissapear along with it does ease some of it but as i said despite what we are told i am a bit skeptical on that.

The more I listen to her, the more insufferable she becomes. For someone who is meant to represent change, she is very narrow-minded.
This might be the part of us (Stasis) in her acting out.
She wants things to resume as they are, while we ironically want to enact some kind of change to the status quo.

Tony (one od the devs) said one of the inspirations was Taoism, so them having a piece of each other and alternating between different states are part of it, I think.☯️
