I honestly don’t blame either side for their respective decisions made given the situation. Why am I not upset with Washington for insisting that the game go on as scheduled? Well, as we saw in the video, the school‘s A.D. laid out a long and detailed list of extremely valid reasons. It’s a tragedy that things turned out the way they did, and let’s hope the schools do find a way to mend fences in the future and go head-to-head with one another.
They could have met in a neutral site like in Texas where there is no shortage of large stadiums to host big games like this. Seattle is diametrically opposite from Tallahassee and only playing the U of Hawaii in a home game would have been further away. As far as FSU & Washington meeting, never say never because with an expanded CFP, they might have no choice but to play each other.
Really informative video on this situation. However, no fault of yours, TH-cam has become savage with ads. Every min there was an ad. Not exaggerating. But keep up the good work. I love videos like this with sports history I never knew.
This video was great. I always wondered why we never played Washington. I just assumed it was bc they were literally across the country. Well put together + very informative = instant like and subscribe
Does seem kind of strange that they agreed to play each other all the way back in 1971. When Bobby Bowden took over, he said he'd take FSU to play anywhere, and he did. But he didn't take over at FSU until 76. I had figured at first that it was just a deal he'd made after he took over, until they said the deal was made in 71. Florida State really has no reason to go play in Seattle. They mainly recruit their own region. A team like Tennessee or Nebraska with a weak in-state recruiting base needs to play OOC games in other regions because they have to recruit nationally, but no team from Florida needs to do that.
It's pretty natural to not know how good the UW Huskies were during the late 70s through the very early 90s, but they were a really solid program. In 1982, they were preseason #2 and were ranked #1 for about half of the season (sputtering late, finishing 10-2 with a #7 final ranking). So, there is a massive storyline that isn't being told here: people simply didn't want to play UW. Money aside, traveling from FL to WA to face one of the best teams in the country? No thanks -- we were expecting a mid-tier team when we first negotiated the contract. We'll stay home.
Yeah, keep saying that is the reason. UW has never been an elite college football program, they are at best above average on a good year. They should be glad that teams from the east coast haven’t wanted to travel that far.
@@mopar_dude9227 UW finished inside the top 10 eight different times and won 2 national championships during this time. But, sure, they weren't elite and simply above average. If you really want to explore the "never been elite" comment, then we can even go back to 1908-1916. In 9 years, they didn't lose a single game going 58-0-3.
@The Esquire of Sports ® This is an entire video of FSU literally excluding Washington. Did you watch the video? Maybe instead of "anybody, anywhere," you should try "most people, most places ... just not UW in Seattle."
actually Don James and Bobby Bowden were friends via the Christian Coaches Coalition and thought that it'd be cool for the programs to play each other - my understanding was that the broadcast money just wasn't there. an unranked UW (with QB Mark Brunell) did travel to the old Orange Bowl during the regular season during the very early 90s and whipped a top-ranked Miami team at home
They also coached together at FSU under Bill Perterson. Bill Peterson at FSU had some good coaches under him. On top of James and Bowden, Peterson's coaching staffs included Bill Parcells, and Joe Gibbs. Not to shabby.
FSU decided it would have been bad for them to take a trip that would have had them flying in an airliner on Sept. 11. An omen, if we had only seen it.
The UW wouldn’t have recovered the $350K either because they had a duty to mitigate their damages. They did actually schedule a substitute game which mostly covered the losses from the canceled game. At the time this happened, UW fans assumed that the travel costs excuse was BS and that Florida State was simply afraid to play the game.
What would've happened if the shoe was on the other foot and Washington refused to go to Tallahassee for the same reasons FSU refused to go to Seattle?
Well, that same season, USC managed to travel to Gainesville to play Florida and WSU somehow got themselves to Knoxville to take on Tennessee and neither program was bankrupted.
@@scottstevens9533 Heh, Wazzu played in Knoxville *four* times in the 80s (80, 82, 84, and 88), in addition to two trips each to Ann Arbor and Columbus (and went back to all three in the 90s) and somehow the program is still running 30-40 years later🤣
Think about the back and forth over costs and scheduling and what was and wasn't "possible"....now fast forward to college football 2020 and laugh at the shenanigans of this FSU -uw dustup. Shame it didn't happen, noles would have rolled them.
There was no way that Washington's lawsuit would gain any traction. Florida State couldn't help that skyrocketing flight costs would've left it taking a bath in travel expenses. Also, with different people leading each university 40 years later, I wouldn't rule out a meeting in the foreseeable future. Further, using the term "rivalry" here is a bit of a stretch.
I would love for this to have been taken up at the Supreme Court. In between dealing with such little trifles as whether or not nonviolent boycotts are protected under the First Amendment, the allowable scope of a warrentless search of an automobile at a traffic stop, the Equal Protection Clause and how it relates to school admissions, and other silly stuff like that in 1982, they can take up the very important task of whether or not Florida State has to pay Washington a bunch of money for not wanting to spend a bunch of money flying to the literal opposite corner of the contiguous 48 states.

There was a similar flap when Miami didn't come west for their return trip (from the Whammy in Miami) in 1998--UW played Utah State I have no idea who Miami played. Probably a good thing as UW wasn't very good and already had a return trip to Lincoln on the docket, in which they got annihilated while Miami had UCLA--the game that was rescheduled to the end of the year and they knocked UCLA out of the Fiesta Bowl. They did have one in 2000-01. You can sort of learn more about that, at least the 2000 part, by clicking the card in the upper right hand corner.
No, that is not why the cost went up! In the late 70's, inflation for the United States on all goods, averaged around 15% or more. Yes, labor cost went up, along with all goods and services during that time, which Airlines had to make the decision to recoup such cost. Deregulation did not make the cost go up, and in fact caused it to not go up as much as it would had, with the regulations on it. Learn history, before making anymore asinine ignorant statements!
Wow, a judge which actually followed the US Constitution and admitted truthfully, he did not have the jurisdiction to rule on this case, and that only SCOTUS could. That is 100% right! This would be two states suing each other for damages, which only the SCOTUS can hear! A correct ruling on such! Also under contract law, you ALWAYS put a clause in it about arbitration, if one party violates the terms of such contract! Arbitration can be heard by such, and rule on such for the agreements in the contract. Final thing is always put a clause in a contract which states specifically if one party fails to meet the requirements of the contract, they own the other party such an amount of compensation!
