    I'm 5'10, 8 UTR player. I've tried a bunch of grip sizes and I've customized my racquets in many different ways. I like my racquet to be handle heavy, 355 gr strung with a 4 1/2 grip + an overgrip because my strokes tend to be very wristy so a bigger grip helps me stabilize the whole thing. As a result, my strokes are more consistent and solid. I use an eastern forehand grip and I can let loose with my grip to get topspin.

  • @tedneanderthal7373
    @tedneanderthal7373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The "shake hands" grip was an Eastern forehand grip; it was NOT a Continental grip. The Continental grip was one bevel over towards the top of the handle. If you have elbow problems then you want a larger grip size like a 4 1/2" grip. My serves and volleys are better with a large grip size because the racquet twists less in my hands resulting in more power and accuracy on those shots.

    I think you may have missed a crucial aspect of selecting a correct grip size . Hold the racquet in your playing hand and ensure a finger width between the fleshy part and your longest finger. While the lighter frames do allow for a smaller grip, the risk of tennis elbow increase the tighter one holds the racquet.

    • @charlesfaure1189
      @charlesfaure1189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're holding the racquet tightly you're doing it wrong. The modern game is played with a loose hand/loose arm. Tightness causes loss of racquet speed and will increase injury risk.

    4 1/2" grip here, somewhere between Eastern and semi-Western grip. 6' tall but not big hands. I can tolerate 4 3/8", but the lower I go under 4 1/2", the more forearm and elbow soreness I get. I have a friend's old Pure Drive 4 1/8" that hurts just looking at it.

      It's always funny to hear all the time "modern game" and "modern forehand". I learned tennis at the end of the 80s and have always been playing with an eastern forehand ever since. Still beating most players in my club, even the young and "modern" ones with their top spin balls. And on European clay that is! Taking the ball on the rise and sending strong, flat shots with a headlight racquet ≥315 grammes unstrung with closed string pattern is still a winning method! Who cares then about "modernity".

    My hand measures up for a 4½. I'm 1.77m and 70kg and have fairly dainty hands for a man, but nevertheless, that's what the ruler says. The classic test of gripping the racket and putting a finger in the gap also says 4½, spot on, in fact it's a tiny bit small. However, to actually play with, I prefer a grip size down from this (what we call a "3" in Europe). I've no idea if that's just because it's what I've always used, but it just feels more wieldy in my hand, particularly when switching grips between shots.

    I have used 4 1/2 as long as I can remember, in my early teens in the 90's I definitely liked a thicker grip than most of my friends in the club, and it had to be a head shape, i.e. more rectangular. The wilson shape was fine, but I couldn't deal with the more rounded prince shape that was very popular in my club. Currently I have a few Head prestige (graphene 360+ I believe, the red ones) in 4 1/2 with a leather grip + tourna overgrip. I am 6' 3" btw. I don't have an old school eastern grip, but I also don't have just one grip for a forehand, I switch around depending how high I am hitting the ball and how much spin I am hitting with etc. Anyway, not sure what my point is, but I feel that already in the 90's, 4 3/8 was probably the most popular and I was the odd one out liking the thicker 4 1/2 with original grip + overgrip. Regardless, it is mainly a matter of preference with no hard rights or wrongs.

      This was in Sweden in the 90's btw :). I am sure the older players in the club liked thicker more traditional grips too, but I am born 1983 and was therefore pretty young in the 90's, my friends all had thinner grips than me, only a couple of exceptions.

On the other hand, I want to get a Six-One 95, but make it slightly lighter and more head-balanced by removing the grip and replacing with two overgrips (-6g in the handle). It would be great if you could try a Six-One 95 Harry, as there aren't many reviews out there, but it's still a well respected frame. If only I knew this kind of a stiff when I was a kid in the 90s. I saved my money and bought my own racquet with a grip size of 4 1/2. After playing with it for a bit, it became uncomfortable to hold. 4 3/8 is the way to go for me.

  • @WaltKurtz68

    "Universal grip size"? There never was a universal grip size. Grip size has always been totally individual.
    You choose a grip size according to the size of your hand, or maybe out of personal preference.
    Maybe he meant "the most commonly used" grip size.

  • @RustyBrown_

    I don't think it's a 'requirement' to baseline a grip size -- especially for recreational players (like me). Find what's comfortable. Find what works. The idea here is to play and have fun. At 5'10, 160 pounds, I like a 4 1/2 or even a 4 5/8 with an over grip. That might just be me - but at 62, I don't have tennis elbow issues; I can get decent spin when needed (yes, I play more flat shots than most); and I have a fairly fast swing speed. Nothing against smaller grips -- if that's for you, go for it, but try EVERYTHING (from grip sizes to string tensions) to get to whatever works for YOU. Cheers.

  • @thehandseesall
    @thehandseesall 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    you can be 2ft and have a grip size 4 1/2 if your hands/fingers are long, your age and height and size has nothing to do with it, it's all about the size of your hands.
    for example, I am 5ft 11" and I use a 4 1/2 grip with a sleeve to extend the grip to a size 4 5/8 with a leather grip and an overgrip. I'm always being told that my grip is too big... until I explain and show them the size of my hands and compare mine to theirs.

    So let’s clear it up Folks
    4 1/4 + overgrip = 4 3/8
    4 3/8 + overgrip = 4 1/2
    This is according to a measuring tape
    This means if you prefer 4 1/2 get a 4 3/8 grip size
    Hope this was helpful...

    I hate to say this but I'm gonna be very frank. This preaching about grip size is all BS. I play with 4 1/2 and I play with all sorts of shots. THERE IS NOTHING STONE AGE. If it's comfortable and works for you, use it. There is nothing universal, and let best-selling go to hell -- we are all different and should choose the one that feels best and works best.

    4 5/8 at age 10? There is no way a short person or someone with small hands could hang onto a wooden raquet with a leather grip. I played in the 60/70s. I dont remember anyone using a 4 1/2 grip. The std grip was 4 3/8. Even then I struggled to hang onto this size. Everyone had the death grip. I have always felt the 4 1/4 should be the std go to grip unless someone has long fingers. It doesnt surprise me that today top tennis players are using this grip size. Bigger grip sizes on wooden raquets was wrong.
    I was using a 4 1/4 fifty years ago. Tennis like most sports today have gone back to what worked in the past.

    Really? still with the Daddy issues; after all these years? C'mon Champ! The only grip that matters is the one that suits you. That's tried and true regardless of what coachy techy pseudo science fad comes along. If you feel comfortable/confident with a 4" grip or 4 3/4" grip then that's what you should use.
