    So I have had to change string tensions and types over the last 8 years of playing due to arm problems and moving to very different places. When I was in Texas with high humidity and being less than 800 ft above sea level i would get mine done at about 48-52. When I moved to Las Vegas that was way to low as I was hitting the fence more times then the court. Vegas is anywhere from 2000 to 2300 ft above sea level with no humidity so I started to have string higher from 54-58. It is always fascinating to hear you talk about the differences in strings since a few pounds can play dramatically different or similar depending on where you play. Love the videos!

      That doesn't really make sense because the ball travels further in humid air. Seems like low altitude with no humidity and low altitude with high humidity should offset.

    I string my Pure Aero Tour with Hyper-g 115 at 50/48 lbs in summer, 48/46 lbs in winter. A bit lower in crosses increases a bit the spin potential, and slightly softer on the arm. And I like the thinner string, it feels livelier and softer.

      Test string is Polyfibre Cobra 1.25. Very very soft poly, more than most multis. 48 mains with 50 in the crosses to lock the stringbed on a 16x19 100sq” (like a Clash, to lower the trajectory). Or 46lbs in 18x20 or smaller head size to get the same feel.

    • @Matheusfk3
      @Matheusfk3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right. In my case, I like to string my gravity pro at 45 lbs and I know it's a 18x20 100 in² frame.
      If I'm testing a smaller headsize with the same string pattern, I may go 1 or 2 lbs lower to see if I get simillar feel.
      If I'm testing a 16x19 smaller headsize I may stick to the same tension as my gravity, and so on and so forth.

      With modern polyester strings, 48 is pretty normal. Back in the dinosaur days of synthetic guts string were strung at 60.

  • @TenniswithAlex
    @TenniswithAlex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's about the stringbed stiffness, not the tension that is important. You may need stringbed stiffness machine to test the stringbed for your clients. It will be very useful when they (or you) would like to try different strings (stiffer, softer) or racquet headsizes, string patterns that you have the stringbed stiffness (DT value in kg/cm) as the reference to adjust the tension. 48lbs of natural guts is completely different from stiff polys and it might give you inaccurate judgement to the strings :-D.
    One important parameter of the strings that tennis manufacturers try to hide to the elongation of the strings. Less elongation -> stiffer (poly like). More elongation -> softer (natural gut like). Also at different tension ranges, strings elongate differently (tend to elongate less or more) that directly affect the stringbed stiffness.

  • @tedneanderthal7373
    @tedneanderthal7373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My tension varies depending on the size of the racquet head, how dense the string pattern is, how stiff and powerful the racquet is and - most importantly - the type of string that I am using. Usually I string in the exact middle of the suggested range if I am using a synthetic gut. For a multifilament, I would up the mid tension by 2 lbs. as that type of string has a lot of power. If I string with a polyester then I drop the mid tension by 5 lbs. because that type of string is very stiff. Lately, I have been moving towards the softer synthetic gut like Ashaway but I also like Gamma synthetic gut. If the frame has an open 16 x 18/19 string pattern then I will use Gamma synthetic gut with Wearguard. I like Head Lynx polyester in 16 gauge also.

  • @sunny051488
    @sunny051488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting on strings and tensions. For 4.0+ players: Synthetic gut full bed and multis full bed, don’t go under 55lbs on any racquet with a stiffness higher than 65(pure drive). It will be a rocket launcher if you go lower.
    Co-poly full bed I could do 52lbs
    co-poly mains 54/multi or synthetic cross at 52.
    String pattern and weather is a huge factor also. During the heatwave here in LA, anything under 54lbs in the daytime is causing the ball to fly so easily in a 16x19 but is doable in a 18x20 frame.

If the rackets are similar then sure, but if they are very different then maybe the tensions should be adjusted. For example I used to play with a pro staff 90 at 45 lbs. Interesting comment. I'm a hybrid guy. I love to experiment with mixes. My starting tension is 50 pounds, whatever the string may be. But I always go up when we play outdoor in the summer, especially if we have hot weather(June, July and August). As soon as we reach September, I go down to my original tension(between 48 and 52). Having 4 racquets, I always have one that's low(48) and one that's higher(52) with 2 racquets of the same tension(around 50). This way, I adapt to the conditions and to my OWN condition....

    No right or wrong, depends on the feel you like and what racket you use. As your skills and power improve the likelihood is an increase in tension. As you age and fitness drops with a hurting elbow, the likelihood is that the tension drops. Thats my personal experience playing tennis for over 30yrs. Using natural during competitive days to multifilaments in my later years and currently polys for bit more spin, despite the slight elbow pain. I have 3 Pure Aeros, and i string 52, 53, 54 on 17 gauge Rpm Blast black. I choose which i prefer depending on my condition on play day. 😎😁 in my younger days, 20-30yrs ago, i string between 56 to 60lbs on various rackets

The cross I always string 2kg less (about 4 pounds). This gives it a nicer stringbed as the racket is a 16x19 or 18x20 pattern. More strings on the cross equals lower tension in my rackets to have an equal balance between mains and crosses.

    I go Luxilon Element 16L on my mains at 54 and Babolat Synth on crosses at 58... Makes the entire bed a little more responsive, not as stiff and a little cheaper each racket too :). It's right that you have to gauge what tension the strings will perform best at, and experimenting is fun!
    Also a side note, if you are gonna be hitting hard at a low tension, your racket control needs to be really tuned in! That's why pros can play on crazy low tensions... they have perfect timing, hit the sweet spot every time and brush over the ball to keep it in... not intuitively... much harder to do than go high tension and bang!

    Would it be possible for the next video to address the issue of players who want to lower the weight of the Pro Staff 97 Federer @ 340 grams? As its a nice racket to have but heavy for most players, what possible ways could someone do to lower its weight ?

      I have asked Wilson and this is their reply:
      Wilson reply: "The only way to reduce the weight of a racket, is to cut out the headguard and remove all unnecessary parts of grips (and put a synthetic grip maybe). But as a brand, and for warranty and security reasons, we don't recommend to do that. Is up to you to decide but remember that any modification is not covered under warranty is you have an issue."
      A video would be much appreciated :)

    How do you play with looser tension if the strings are sliding all over the place

      Certain strings like Wilson NXT springs right back in place so no need to straighten them with fingers.

    I recently played a tournament and the weather here was freezing so I decided to string one of my racquets at 47 that being the lowest I had ever gone. I was not used to this so I didn’t use it in the tournament (but I should have) later I take my time with it and got used to it and decided that I absolutely loved it.

    You mentioned in your 'Prince' video that stringers sell rackets.
    Well in my case, not only did the stringer sell me the rackets, he sold me on the strings and tension (58 on main and 55 on the cross).
    I have learned to play with this setup on the 'Banana' (RPM blast / TNT) and just stick to it.

      Low tensions on a raquet like that makes it uncontrollable imvho. I would stick with it.

    My advice is to string at the lowest tension you can control. I used to have arm problems but since stringing at 45 lbs I have been fine. That's on a Wilson steam 105s with a 16x15 string pattern! Mind you I do play with heaps of spin and I restring often.

    I string my own racquets so have been able to play around with strings and tension. I too found 48 lbs is my magic number no matter the string. I use to play 62-64 lbs 18X20 dunlop 200Gs to 16X19 dunlop 200 cx tour with syn gut. mid 50's with polys. When I switched to the 16X19 98 blades & started using polys (tour bite) poly/hybrids I found 48 lbs no matter the string is my magic tension best balance of power. control and sweet spot for me. I hit mostly aggressive full throttle topspin. find it a little harder to control blocked shots and flat volleys but have adjusted love the feel and results at 48lbs the ball really jumps off the court. I feel really connected to the ball at this tension.

    40 LB is my best tension. Jack Sack play not good right now, the tension is big problem. If he use 40 LB, he will win one grand slam single title. I am 100% sure.

    I’ve tested a few different poly strings at our club with stringster app and tourna string gauge. it’s amazing how many players have dead polys in there racquets. The hybrids mask this but the tension difference between crosses and mains can be 20lb different. Luxillon alu power seem to loose tension fastest. I tested some rackets after a month that had lost 25lb of tension.

    I use to string 66lbs tension when i was young. When i get older, my hands gets more pain so i lower my tension to 60, then 55, then 52, 50 and now the best is 48lbs. And i usually can use the string only at 46 47 or 48, other than that i cant use it and feels too stiff if its more than 49 or too much swing if it is too low. Ans i never broke a string since i play more flat than spin.
